SUNDAY JULY 6 1947 NEVADA STATE JOURNAL RENO 'NEVADA PAGE SEVENTEEN Hotel Opening Set on July 12 WELLS July 5 Opening of the new Oasis Hotel and casino has been set for Satur day July 12 Sam Tooley owner manager announced this week Oasis is on highway 40 approxi mately 30 miles east of Wells Simpson and Goebel general contractors of Wells were in charge of construction of the two story cinder block building which is completely modern Mr and Mrs Richard Tebbetts announce the birth of a son their first child in Oakland Calif Wed nesday 1 Mrs Tebbetts formerly Miss Eleanor Weeks is the daughter of Mrs Edith Weeks who left Thursday to spend two or three weeks with her daughter and family Lauric high school in structor left Wednesday to visit his home in Sparks before finish ing summer session at the Uni versity of Southern California in Los Angeles Mr and Mrs Robert Godwin and daughters and Mr and Mrs Godwin Jr and sons re turned Wednesday after a two weeks vacation in Indiana Dale Murphy employe of the highway department stationed in Beowawe was here Thursday visit ing his parents Mr and Mrs Murphy en route to Reno to spend the ourth of July week end time visiting antique shops look ing for valuable paintings Comedian Red Skelton is an other painter He recently held an exhibit all of his paintings in this show being of circus clowns Bette took up painting after she married William GrantSherry a Laguna Beach artist She has not had much time for her new: hobby lately due to the birth of their first child Other of painters are Gail Russell John Garfield Robert Ryan Richard Conte James Warren and Richard Whorf Garfield and Ryan specialize in landscapes Warren devotes most of his energies to westerns Conte mostly on portraits Jimmy Cagney and Gary Cooper both are apt at cartooning Director Jean Negelcscu also is an accompished artist Once when he wanted Joan Crawford to show' a certain mood in a picture he did a fine portrait of her portraying the mood It is now one of most prized possessions Herlong To Get Diplomas rom High School HERLONG Calif July 5 (Spe cial) Twelve will soon receive their high school diplomas here from the Lassen Junior col lege it announced today by Delwin Poe special instructor for the Sierra Ordnance Depot GI school Ranging in ages from 21 to 38 'the dozen veterans successfully passed their general education de velopment tests after a long hard course of study Poe stated The diplomas ill be forwarded by the Junior college to Col Arthur Luse depot commanding officer for distribution to the' veterans The students all employes and World War II veterans studied special subjects during the course one half held during orking hours and half at night school Those qualifying for high school diplomas include Louis Picciano Patrick Garcia James Anderson Thomas Goodwin Roger John son' Robert Leonberger Wilbert Davies Richard David Kenneth oster Wayne Pratt Thomas Grimes and Samuel Tate Jr Lynn Kirkman also studied with the class doing college preparatory work He had received his high school diploma from his home school in Illinois Veteran Retires As Postmaster SUSANVILLE Calif July (Special) Postmaster Elmer Win chell retired this week after 15 service and Assistant Post master Ivor Lanigar was appoint ed acting postmaster Two postal inspectors from the Reno district office were at the lo cal postoffice this complet ing the transfer Mr Winchell was postmaster in 1933 and during his administration the local office ad vanced from class 2 to class 1 and a postoffice building erected in 1938 Ed Kuenzll money order clerk takes over the assistant postmas ter duties Mr Lanigar joined the postal service as a temporary sub clerk June 29 1925 when Math now county tax collector was postmaster MacMurray John Payne and Joan McCracken are the latest to turn to oils and water colors After preliminary practice June has undertaken a monumental work She is painting a mural across one whole wall of her den red John and Joan have con tented themselves with Ynore mod est beginnings One of most versa tile artists Linda Darnell recently departed on a four month trip to Europe for the purpose of paint ing landscapes particularly in Italy and Switzerland Linda figured it would the most restful vacation after the most arduous five months of her career playing the title role in "orever Linda does portraits as well as landscapes She uses oils water colors and charcoal While she was at work in the picture she did portraits of her four leading men Cornel Wilde Glenn Langan Richard Greene and John Russell as well as other members of the cast Ginger Rogers who is currently busy in Had to Be is another of most versa tile artists She not only paints and draws but is a sculptress A bust of her mother Mrs Leila Rogers is one of her best works Lionel Barrymore is not only a musical composer but is famous for his etchings Vincent Price not only paints but at one time ran an art gallery in Beverly Hills as a hobby As a lecturer he is rated as an auth ority on art It is Price's theory that an actor must have an out side interest the very nature of an ac profession thqre are long pe riods of says Price actor must fill in this time with some sort of outside interest or the platitude about the devil find ing work for idle hands is all too likely to come true "Excessive drinking which has bothered many a fine actor often seems to stem from this actors turn to sport as an outlet but I doubt one can make a real avocation out of golf or tennis Literature of course is a fascinating study but it not provide much creative oppor tunity for the reader actors move around a good bit and at times too have no spare time atallso they can not become involved in hobbies which require extensive equipment and continuous application finally the graphic arts seem to fulfill best the conditions under which an actor Anthony Quinn is a sculptor and painter his hobby stemming from his original Richard Anderson son of Mr CARSON YOUTH CENTER SOUGHT CARSON CITY July 5 (Spe cial) At a meeting of the Ormsby County Youth Center Association Wednesday night at the Civic aud itorium Mayor Elston long an advocate of a suitable site for after school activities again urged that the civic auditorium basement be made available as a recreation center for local youth site not only is ideally lo cated but properly lighted and well he said He ex pressed the desire to do all pos sible to obtain equipment for the center and promote its reorganiza tion Mayor Elston also stated that the selective service staff now housed in the basement should be out of the building within a month I hope that the basement can be opened as the youth center when school reopens this urther discussion will be held at the July 7 meeting of the city trustees and Lon Wright was asked to represent the Ormsby Youth Association at the session District Attorney Richard Wat ers Jr and Hugh Shamberger also concurred
