Monday was selected by the government of Eire for this historic event because it is the 33rd anniversary of the Easter week by Sinn Fein against England. This abortive revolt was well named, for it was indeed sanguinary affair, as I can tify from personal experience reporting the event for the Associated Press. The revolt was carefully planned. A key figure in the preparations was Sir Roger Casement, an Irishman who had been knighted for distinction in the British consular service.

The first world war was at its height and Casement was in Germany where he recruited a brigade from Irishmen captured while serving with the British. These men were to be transported to Ireland for the uprising Revolt Set The revolt was set for Easter Monday. On Good Friday Casement and two Irish colleagues landed on tha Kerry coast of West Ireland from a collapsible boat which had transported them from a German aubmarine. A German munitions ship, the Aud, also arrived off West Ireland. A peasant found the collapsible boat and reported to the police who shortly discovered Casement.

They also captured one of hts col leagues who revealed the plans for the uprising. The British sank the Aud. The news spread and there was consternation in rebel ranks. An was to cancel the uprising, but thera was a difference of opinion among the high command, Thus it developed that part of the show was canceled while tha revolt in Dublin went ahead per schedule with the seizurs of public buildings. A Republic was declared and P.

H. Pearse was sleeted president of the provisional government. He also was commander in chief. The British military crushed the revolt in a few days. It was a tragic tlma, for some one thousand people were killed.

Pearse and 14 other laadtra were condemned by courts martial and were executed. Another condemned to die was the colorful countess of Markievicz, who took part In the actual gun play, but this sentence was commuted to penal servitude and she shortly was released altogether.
