A4 THE PANTAGRAPH, SUNDAY, MAY 9, 1982 Organization seeks assistance to start local aircraft museum -AO he served in the Air Force in 1954. You do not have to be a pilot or an engineer to become a member of Heritage In Flight, just someone interested in the preservation of airplanes. There are many flight and ground crew positions available that require no past experience and participation depends on available time, he said. Wingler said the success of the chapter depends on the response, the number of members interested in volunteering time and donations received. Any donations made to Heritage In Flight Museum are 100 percent tax deductible, and will be used solely for aircraft purchase, restoration and maintenance.

Wingler said that as soon as he finds 20 to 30 people interested in joining, he will have an organizational meeting. If all goes well, the Bloomington used primarily during World War II to drop paratroopers and carry passengers. Its most current combat usage was during the Vietnam War. "This plane was instrumental in getting airlines off and running. Most airlines began by using this type of plane," Wingler said.

"Its use in the future by the Air Force appears to be limited or non-existent. It just became outdated." The aircraft will be purchased from the Air Force, which now has a number of the DC-3s in storage, for about $5,000. Wingler said the price includes the hiring of a local contractor to get the plane in flying condition and bring it to Bloomington. The DC-3 would be used in various air shows around the area and in local activities. Wingler hopes it also will be on display at the Bloom-ington-Normal Municipal Airport for the public to see.

By JUNE WAGLEY Pantograph staff Have you ever wondered what it's like to fly? Are you envious of birds and pilots? A new organization, Heritage In Flight Museum, is trying to get people involved firsthand with airplanes from the past, providing a chance for people to live out childhood dreams. The Heritage In Flight Museum, was organized to locate, restore and fly aircraft which have contributed to the nation's aeronautical progress. Not many people can afford purchasing, restoring and maintaining an antique, classic or warbird aircraft, but this organization gives everyone the chance. The local coordinator of the Bloomington chapter, Norman Wingler, 2007 Benjamin Lane, Bloomington, said anyone interested in aviation is welcome to get involved. He is a licenced pilot and has been involved in aviation since Heritage In Flight Museum has a chance to acquire this DC-3.
