acclaimed Canadian artist Robert Bateman will on some tips and discuss his chniques with art students attending the Artsperience program in North Bay this summer Artsperience a three-week program held at Canadore College attracts students from around the world to learn from' some of the top experts in all forms of art Cartoonist Lynn Johnston of Corfoeil will also participate in the program touch mi all aspects of says Artsperience co-ordinator Keith Campbell a Canadore instructor touch mi the music side literature and all types of visual arts This Artsperience will mark the 10th anniversary for the program and Mr Campbell said he expects between 700 and 800 students to register Wildlife painter Mr Bateman win cMiduct a three-day forum on his style of art from July 8 to 10 Mr Campbell said inquiries on Mr workshop have been in and calls have come several parts of the US and as far away as South Africa been swamped by people calling about the Robert Bateman he said people are please crowd By GEORGE CLEATOR Nugget Stuff Reporter For young performers entering trldofe the world of entertainment a break is like manna from heaven it can mean the difference between making it or not But with the incredible number of people seeking fame and fortune these days the chances of getting the elusive break are very low Mine often than not luck or being in the right place at the right time that propels a young performer from obscurity to fame Established performers like Ruth Morawetz are trying to change this trend the public and guest conductors from across the globe will put on performances at the new North Bay Arts Centre something for everybody even people who inter-' ested in he said more activity you have the better it For families attending Artsperience there are even programs for juniors and youths not a babysitting service They do art They do a lot of Students attending Mr Campbell said do work and get completely immersed in the programs not a vacation When these students get going he said of the courses get so exciting the students hold reunions Students who attend Artsperience can pay 865 to stay at the College Education Centre- student residences for a week The courses cost about $50 to 860 each and include both credit courses students can use towards an art diploma and non-credit courses College will adjudicate the festival The four plays are: Chippewa Secondary productions of A Rope Against the Sun and Waiting for the Parade the latter was named outstanding production at the district drama festival by adjudicator Marty Southcott and received the award for outstanding technical achievement Ecole Se-condaire Algonquin's production -Dark of the Moon which received the award and Almaguin Secondary drama Reasonable Doubt Saturday very gifted performers soprano Wendy Humphreys singeractor Denis Simpson and sing-eractresscomposer Charlotte Moore Accompanied on piano by Ms Morawetz the three performed selections individually in pairs and together The evening opened with the theme song aptly titled Signature Music which was composed by Ms Morawetz The piece began on a of mystery with the performers singing the first few bars from the wings before coming together cm stage Ms forte is opera and the arias she sang Saturday evening complemented Her superb crystal-clear voice She also has a wonderful comedic sense which she character Mr Simpson has no trouble convincing casting directors about his acting prowess The versatile performer has appeared in 32 stage productions including a four-month engagement with A Chorus Nipissing plays-in regional showcase Four high school plays presented during the 17th annual Nipissing District Collegiate Drama Festival held in North Bay March 27 to 29 will represent the Nipissing District at the Northern Regional Showcase Rick Blair coordinator of the district drama festival told The Nugget Sunday Three plays are the productions of North Bay high schools while the fourth is from South River Altogether nine plays will participate in the Northern Regional Festival which is being held in Timmins April 23 to 25 Ron Cameron a teacher at Sheridan Soprano Wendy Humphreys gestures during one opening arias at the Classical Cabaret held Saturday at the North Bay Arts Centre Ms Humphreys and two other Canadian performers entertained a small audience with a chock-filled with music program of her aircraft retired at ceremony the aisles with his rendition of the song Vipers from the Broadway musical Watching Mr Simspon no wonder he was the recipient of a Dora Mavor Moore Award for his performance in the production In vipers he was uncannily snakelike He slinked across the stage and hissed his lyrics all the while drawing on a cigarette that shrouded his outfitted as an electronic warfare training aircraft later this year Last two By GEORGE CLEATOR Nugget Staff Reporter A dedication ceremony Saturday at Canadian Forces Base North Bay marked the end of an era 1 The last two Voodoo aircraft still flying in the world 067 the black and 006 the grey trainer version were retired after a service career that was one month short of 30 years in three air forces Since 1982 the Voodoos have been assigned to CFB North 414 Electronic Warfare Squadron The retirement ceremony marked the final flypast of the two Voodoos and the last time the aircraft would be seen in the air together Next week 067 will be returned to the United States where it will be stripped of all its gear repainted in the colors of the United States Air Force and placed on a pedestal at Minnesota Air National Guard Museum at Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport Voodoo 006 will be sent to Nova Scotia where it will be mounted mi a pedestal at Canadian Forces School Cornwallis the basic training establishment for members of the Canadian Forces The Voodoos officially known in Canada as CF-lOls and the unique EF-101 were in their time the most powerful fighters in the world They could climb from sea level to 30000 feet in less than three minutes and at full afterburning power approached twice the speed of sound The ceremony was held at the entrance to CFB North
