the railroad assisted by special detectives employed by the Adams Ex press Company engaged in a search for the bandit the prediction was made to night by the Pennsylvania Railroad of ficers that his apprehension is but a few hours off He was traced a short distance up the mountain side adjacent to the scene of the holdup currency dropped In his precipitous flight serving as a guide for the posse on his trail Some of the railroad and Adams Ex press officers said that the amount of the loot has dwindled to about $65 The highwayman it is said took $5000 in bullion and $200 In pennies from the ear and all of this has been found along the trail except $65 A statement Is made to the effect that there was a large sum of paper money in the express car looted and it is the opinion of the railroad offl I cers that the brigand was aware of this nut by mistake took the packages of bullion Makes Crew Deliver Booty The robbery occurred early this morn ing on the eastern slope of the' Alleghany Mountains where the bandit stopped the train by placing a dynamite cap or the track He then compelled the crew to carry thousands of dollars to a point tn the woods When the conductor of the train at tempted to interfere with the plans he was shot in the hand and the bold bandit succeeded in making good his escape in the darkness however ho mistook a bag containing 10000 new Lincoln pennies for gold coin and stag gered away with It leaving the real gold bullion to be recovered by the railroaders When the news of the robbery reached the railroad and express company officials they assist In directing the search The looted train was made up of an engine three express cars and two sleep ing coaches filled with passengers At about 1:30 a it was running through Lewistown narrows a wild and lonely mountain gorge through which flows the Juniata River when suddenly a dyna mite cap exploded and the engine driver brought the train to a standstill Wnen he looked out to see what the trouble was ha was confronted by a i masked figure holding a revolver In either hand i there any mail cars on this i demanded the highwayman I wasthe reply of the startled en gineer The engine erejv of his revolvers at him one of the shots penetrating his hand and the others grazing his body Despite the appearance of three passen gers who had been awakened by the shooting the robber calmly ordered the crew back on the train and compelled them to steam away leaving the bullion beside the track It was recovered later by a posse sent on a special train When i the train was leaving he
