present maximum of $100 monthly to $17S monthly soon will be submitted to 'the City Commission by the Retirement Board The Wichita Municipal Employes Council will express its position on the plan at a meeting on Nov 5 according to notices posted at city hall Tuesday The increased benefit would require a 'change in the Kansas Retirement Enabling Act affecting Wichita city employe retirements The City Commission will -be asked to seek a change in that legislation in 1955 Actually the increase in' benefits would come through increasing the present $200 monthly salary limitation upon which employes pay five per cent' of their salary into the retirement fund This $10 monthly employe payment is matched by city budget payment to the fund The amended plan would allow the five per cent payment oir salaries of up tg $350 or $1750 monthly at the maximum with a matching $1750 paid into the fund from the city budget 1 The city budget contribution to the retirement fund in 1953 was $96717 and for 19541s estimated at $99275 For 1965 the contribution is expected -to run $103-980 The tax levy for this contribution in 1955 is 3668 mills approximately 37 cents on each $1000 worth of nowhere but the cemetery probably ahead of time The fact that it has a familiar theme Is in itself nothing against this play by Leonard Kantor but he has done little to fashion an appealing story or failing that even a good rough and ready one- The play is based on a novel by Harold Robbins a good writer Tlie book managed to' pack in considerable appeal and even sympathy for the title character who tries to become a' big shot the easy way and winds up dead Kantor makes an attempt to show the love of family life that was a big part of Danny and to illustrate the unhappy events of his impressionable years that made him determined to Escape poverty at any cost but the ef fort -inisf ires most of the time Phillip Pine tries to do his best with Darmy but the role as it! stands now is probably beyond more than- routine interpretation by anyone Both Danny and the play are pretty one-dimensional The story is set in New York 'lower east side id 1944 Danny la a young fellow getting started with his own business involving dispensing machines An old pal suddenly gives him the opportunity of acquiring thousands of cartons of good ((but -at a time when they were at a premium Danny finances the deal through i his big-shot brother-in-law for $100000 thinks his brother-in-law has double-crossed him by having the load hi-jacked and plots for a slimy underworld character to do in his relative He discovers that the hi-jacking just a trick by the brother-in-law to teach him a lesson and is himself killed in an' argument while trying to call off the' assassin this
