Cadillac Party Bar Nips Shorty's, Urka Opens Regional With 2-1 Victory Ludington Daily News, Friday, August 23, 1961. 8 By RICHARD DANCZ Daily News Sports Editor Stankow- 8ki gives a lot of credit to his younger brother for his late- season pitching prowess, but, like most hurlers, likes to take credit for his own hitting ability. The slim righthander, who struggled through much of the first half of the regular season because of work committments, pot himself untracked over the last couple of weeks by pitching in daily practice sessions to his brother Rich, just returned from the service. Put Efforts Together Stankowski put his efforts together Thursday night in the opening game of the Men's Class Softball regionals at McPhatl Field, stopping Traverse City Iron Works 2-1 on a four-hitter. And he drove in both runs for Urka with a two-out single in the fourth inning.

In the other game played, in Men's Class Cadillac Party Bar edged Shorty's Take Out of Manistee 2-1 in 10 innings. Didn't Pitch Much "I had a lot of haying to do in the first part of the season." the likeable Stankowski said, "and didn't pitch much. But now that Ricli is home, he's been catching me every day so I've had a chance to work out." But his hitting, it's another story. "I thought I was hitting pretty good," the good-looking fast- bailer said with an injured smile when he was informed that his game-winning single was only the second hit for him this season in 15 trips. "I guess maybe most of them were coming in exhibition games the last couple of weeks," he admitted.

Drives In Runs Stankowski rammed a single to center to score Don Peterson and Ray Keith after it appeared that losing hurler Bob Loveland was going to work out of a jam. Sonny Skocelas started the frame with a base hit, then went to second when Peterson drew a walk. Keith' followed with a single to right but Skocelas was thrown out at the plate on a perfect throw. Loveland got the second out on strikes before Stankowski caught a fastball belt high. The Iron Works got their only run in the sixth, and only a by rightfielder Don Schicrholl saved a tie.

Nailed At Plate With one out. Couturier got the second hit for TC, a single, and went to second Scamehorn singled. After an infield fly got the second out, Alpers singled to right, scoring Couturier but Schierholt's rifle peg to Keith at the plate just nailed Scamehorn. In the first game of the night, Cadillac's Pudge Fauble stroked a single up the middle in the bottom of the 10th inning with two-out to score Linna from second in a tight pitching duel between Party Bar's Emmons and Shorty's Dick Baker. Cadillac Wins Cadillac had taken a 1 0 lead in the fourth on a walk, sacrifice and Foisic's single but Manistee tied the score in the sixth on Ken Hansen's single and hits by Gusikowski and Baker.

Shorty's collected nine hits to six for Party Bar. Cadillac will meet Fochtman Motors tonight at 10 p.m. Shorty's will piny the loser on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Tournament Schedules For State Final Play 2-Stroke Lead Tournament brackets for the Aug. 30 to Sept.

Lions Battle Colts In Exhibition Tonight By STU CAMEN UPI Sports Writer Joe Namath, football's gift to the mod world of fashion, returns to the scene of many of his college heroics tonight to lead the New York Jets against the Atlanta Falcons in a preseason game at Birmingham, Ala. The former University of Alabama star, the proud possessor of a newly bought, $5,000 full-length mink coat, missed the Jets' first two games this summer because of a gimpy left knee. 194, Dallas By RICHARD L. SHOOK DETROIT (UPI)- Al Kaline exploded. Willie Morton exploded. Dick McAuliffe exploded. Mickey Lolich never lost his cool.

The temperature and humidity were both around 80 Thursday night so Kaline and Horton erupted in the sixth inning with consecutive home runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. For the hot Tigers it was their 15 of their last 19 games and put them seven and one- half games up on the idle Baltimore Orioles, who have to be wondering what they have to do to gain. But while the two perimeters of the Detroit outfield were welcoming Dennis Ribant like the friendly pitcher that he is, McAuliffe was greeting the Chicago starter, Tommy John, in not so friendly fashion. McAuliffe and John wrestled around after the White Sox southpaw put the Detroit second baseman on the dirt with a 3-2 pitch in the third inning. John came out the worse, with torn shoulder ligaments which will sideline him 10 days to three weeks.

Both were ejected from the game. Meantime, Lolich was making the long journey from the security of the bullpen back into the starting rotation with seven innings of four-hit ball, in which he struck out eight, as the left-hander made his first start since July 28. He is now 12-7. With one out in the third, John brushed McAuliffe back. On the 3-2 pitch, McAuliffe made a diving, twisting fall to avoid a high inside pitch anci started toward first with his talk.

Tore Ligaments said a few cuss words to him, he said a few cuss words to me," McAuliffe recalled after the game. Then the Tigers' battling second base man charged and in the ensuing melee, which brought both dugouts onto the field, the Chicago pitcher received his torn ligaments. Ribant, who went from the Tigers to the White Sox recently in a recent waiver deal which sent Don McMahon to Detroit, then came in and hurled two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. "I was pacing up and down in the dugout," Smith said, "and I was saying 'if we don't beat this lollypop, we're all Smith was spared further anguish when Kaline led off the sixth with his eighth home run, .1. DICK MCAULIFFE a booming 420-foot drive to left center, and Horton followed immediately 29th into the upper deck in left to sink Ribant to 2-3.

Just One Mistake Horton had singled in the first inning after singles by McAuliffe and Kaline to give Detroit a 1-0 lead which melted quickly in the heat. "I just made one mistake." Lolich said of his effort. And Tommy Davis hit it for his seventh home run in the fourth inning, following a double by Walt Williams.
