'Twas bnt a breath-And yet a woman's lair fame wilted. And frienda once fond grew cold and altered. And life was worse than death. One venomed word, Tbat struck its coward, poisoned blow In craven whispers bushed and low-And yet tho wide world heard. 'Twas but one whisper--one-That muttered low, for very shame, The thing the slanderer dare not name, And yet its wort was done.

A hint so slight, And yet (to mighty in its power-A human soul in one short hour Lies crushed beneath its blight. About 7 o'clock yesterday morning an ill i i medium-sized, white and bluijl" mastiff appeared very suddenly at corner of Broadway and Front streets, mad lie stood at the corner for several minutes, gQasbingbis teeth, whipping the saliva iu his ugly mouthintoalively foam, and glaring savagely at an inoffensive ash-barrel that stood unprotected on the sidewalk. His primary intention probably was lo juake a dead set at this ash-barrel and reduce it to splinters; but if such was the. case, lie abandoned the project as being unworthy of so rabid a canine as soon as he saw the form of a fruit dealer, by the name of Hazlett, emerge from a doom ay hard by, As Mr. Hazlett stepped into the street, totally unconscious of his peii), the brute made a bound at him, aud before the gentleman could move a foot to escape, had him firmly by tho calf of the leg and was shaking it i i vent to a yell of pain, Mr.

Hazlett jeiked liis leg from the dog's jaws and sought shelter in the nearest house, frantically shouting "mad dog, mad dog watch police!" c. a i a dozen started from the doors and ran out i street to see what was the, a They snw the dog and hat! combined to him out of existence, when lie bounded into tlieir midst aud drove them back i their houses, rending their clothes rind doing some of them bodily then started on a brisk trot up Broadway. There was a large stream of humanity llowing down the street at the time, and of the many who saw the mad brute, very few repressed a natural impulse to do what they could to finish him at once. Stones were thrown at him and sticks broken over his back, but those who hit him and escaped unscathed were few indeed- The dog bit right and left, snapping at the hands aad flying at throats and breasts in a most savage manner. An excited crowd ol men aud boys pursued him up the street, and by worrying him with sticks and stones increased his fury every minute.

In liis course up the street he bit at least fifteen persons, and no one knows how many dogs that joined in the race. Mr. C. II. Beers, who keeps a cutlery and notion store at 55 Broadway, loaded a heavy Colt's levolver when apprised ol the fact that a mad dog was in the street, and started after him in hot haste.

Officer John Iiot.li, who was with the crowd, had his revolver out also, and he and Mi- Beers led the van. They chased the dog from. Broadway along Second street to Ludlow street, up Ludlow to Pearl, down Pearl to Broadway again up Broadway to McAllister, where dog turned and ran back to Thud street, with bowlders aud pistols banging in his rear. Mr. Beers shot at the animal several times, and Mr.

Roth emptied tho six chambers of his revolver twice, but the only mark visible ou tho dog's skin was a very small in the side. At the corner of Third and ISroadway Mr. Beers cornered tho dog between a flight of stone steps aud the house to which they belonged, and fired at him twice without effect. When his last shot had been fired, the dog made a bound toward him and caught the sleeve of his coat. Mr.

Beers struck out with the heavy pistol, and hit the brute on the side of the head but, on repeating tho blow, tore his hand ou tho dog's teeth. Ho then gave up the job aud retired. Mr. Both picked out a good stout dray piu from a dray that happened to como along at that moment, aad flung it at the beast, with the intention of breaking its legs. The animal then made a bound for him, and for several minutes Roth and the dog had a sharp fight around the lamp-post in front ot Dr. Tate's office. The skirmish continued for some time, but at length Iloth gathered all hisstrcngth, and putting it in a well-directed blow with the dray pin, crushed the dog's skull, and laid him out as dead as a door nail. This done, Mr. Roth and other policemen iu Hammond stroctdistrict commenced a slaughter of dogs that had been i by the rabid one, aud killed, wo believe, about a dozen.

As near as we can ascertain, some persons were bitten by the dog. Mr. James Niblett, agent for the Maysville line of steamers, had his pantaloons badly torn, but did not suffer any serious wound. Mr. John Ilazlett was pretty badly bitten.

John Frank, who keeps a bar-room on Sycamore street, near Columbia, was bitten iu tho arm. The hired girl ot Mr. Kramer, on Sycamore and j'eatman streets, had nearly all of her clothes torn oft her, and lost a piece ot the calf of her leg. Adam Cestuer, who works at McCortnick's tobacco factory, on Second street, between Broadway and Ludlow, was badly bitten iu the thigh. John Graeser, who lives in Fulton, was severely bitten in the names of the other persons who were bitten by the dog we did not learn.

TKRiur.LE colored man met with an awful death iu the neighborhood of New Paris, a few nights since. A neighbor, a white man, had killed his hogs and left them out at night. The negro undertook to steal one, and was in such a hurry to secure the pork that he forgot to remove the gambrel stick. To reach his home it was necessary to cross a fence. In doing so he placed the hog on tho top rail, and it is supposed that it slipped--at any rate the negro's head was caught in the opening of the hind legs, and his neck was broken by the stick, He was found next morning dead, the hog on one side of the fence and he on the other, with his head fast at described.

IN Prussia, as in all Germany, the word "dearncss." applied to the necessities ol life, must be compared with former prices in the same country; for a high price ic Germany would be dog-cheap anywheri else. Bridegroom, TakesPotson Because His Bride SeoMs Sim. Newark was very near having a genuine sensation on Saturday night, through the excessively silly actions of one of the wiliest of young men, whose name we withhold lest its divulgeuce might injure his future prospects in life; that is to say. if he will be kind enough to permit himself to live. To dish up the story at once, then, let us begin. On Saturday evening about six o'clock, the young man in question, who has tnrned his twenty-first birth-day, hurriedly entered the drug store of Mr.

William M. Littell, on the corner of Market and Mulberry streets, and iu an excited manner demanded two ounces of laudanum. "What for asked Mr. Littell. "To cure the headache" hesitatingly replied the customer.

The man of drugs, with a perceptive caution that would do honor' a metropolitan apothecary clerk, suspected something wrong, and offered something else that he suggested would effect a better cure. His customer sharply repeated that if he couldn't have wbathe wanted he would take nothing, and then left. At another drug store, however. Ins want was unhesitatingly supplied, and on his way home to the boarding house of Mrs. E.

Middleton, No. 32 Mulberry street, he drank about an ounce and a half. With t'lis deadly enemy to life insinuating ils way into his veins and arteries, he arr'ved at home, and imuieiliately proceeded tb his room, whore be was waiting anxiously for the arrival of a very pretty girl, a hride of about three wife. After coolly greeting her, he asked for pen, ink and paper "to write something." Scarcely was lie seated at the table, however, than a deep drowsiness came over him, and he undressed and retired. His loving little bride bent over to kiss him, when she was startled by a curious perfume, whereat her fears and suspicious were quickly aroused.

In answer to her entreaties as to what he had been drinking, he hesitatingly replied "You're scolding me all the time, and I have taken laudanum." Tho distracted girl at once sent for a medical man, aud Dr. Piper was readily procured. After a i time the doctor learned what had occurred, and found his patient in a deep sleep. tho aid of powerful emetics aud walking him up aud down all over the city. Dr.

Piper succeeded in bringing back to life the rash son of Massachusetts. The doctor says that had it, not been for the fact a his patient, previous to a i the had been indulging freely in hot whisky punches, ho would have been bpyond recovery ere the doctor arrived. This i 5 good pufl' for whisky at all events. This morning the young fellow is all right. Tho immediate cause of his rash act is that his wife severely chklfd him for staying away from home on i a night.

He had seen the falls, and was askt-d, of course, a he thought of i 'and- some," he replied, "quite so--but they did'nt quite hauscr my hexpeclatioua-- besides 1 get vetted and lost my 'at."
