SHOWTIME- Sm-iitwii -EL PASO HERALD-POST Saturday October 30 1976 Southwest Choir concert Polish orchestra here Second of this year's Community Concerts will be given Monday in the Civic Center Theater when the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra comes to the stage at 8 pm Over 100 musicians are ir the United States and Canada for an eight-week tour The Orchestra was created in Warsaw in 1934 by Grzegorz Fitel-berg Since the Orchestra's first North American lour in the fall of 1974 some major engagements have included: Concerts and tour in West Berlin (Feb '75) a two-week tour to the USSR (April participation in Zagreb's Contemporary Music Festival (May) Shiraz' Persepolis Festival (August) and a two-week tour of Spain (Oct) DURING 1971 the Orchestra's appearance soutsidc of Poland will include a tour of Italy participation in the Athens Festival and their second tour to the United States and Canada In 1977 they will tour Great Britain Belgium France and also East Germany Still further ahead into 1978 plans are being made for the orchestra to visit Japan Australia New Zealand and other countries in the Far East A 62-piece orchestra many of whom are El Paso Symphony Orrhcstra members will accompany the choir in Circus Band by Charles Ives and Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein which will be sung in Hebrew Concluding the concert will be the Gloria by Francis Poulenc with Gayle Treakle as soloist THE EL PASO Choir of the Southwest is supported through the dues of the choir members who also buy their own music and concert outfits and through concerned business and friends The choir draws persons from many walks of life within the city Las Cruces Clint high srhonls and the University of Texas at El Paso It has made two European tours and recorded in Nuremberg Germany at Congress Hall That record will be available in March 1977 THIS WILL be the second concert the El Paso Choir has given with a guest conductor Membership is by audition only for singers who have reached their sophomore year in high school with the age on the other end not limited The next major ronccrt by members of the El Paso Choir will be Handel's at St Christopher's Episcopal on Sunday December 12 at 2:30 and 8 pm Three of the guests soloists are from Los Angeles The final concert of the season will be at St Patrick's Cathedral on May 1 which will feature the Mozart "Requiem" with choir soloists and orchestra Persons wishing to audition for the El Paso Choir should contact the director Bruce Nehring at First Presbyterian Church where the choir rehearses each week The first concert to be sung by the El Paso Choir of the Southwest since returning from Europe this past summer will be at the Civic Center on Sunday November 7 at 8 pm Tickets arc now on sale at the Civic Center box office The El Paso Choir which originated as a community choir in 1974 is directed by Rruce Nehr-ing Guest conducting the concert will be Dr nay Moore associate professor of music and director of choral activities at the University of Houston FEATURED SOLOIST in the concert will be Gayle Treakle who is on the faculty of New Mexico Stale Gayle Treakle University A soprano soloist on television and radio she holds a in voice and piano from Madison College Harrisonburg Va and an in piano from NMSU The El Paso Choir will sing Heart is Offered Still to You" by Orlandus Lassus 0 Magnum by Victoria "Andcnken" (Remembrance) by Mendelssohn 'Come to Me My Love' by Norman Dello Joio a work for singing and speaking choir by Knut Knstcdt 'The Path of the Just' CONCLUDING the first part of the concert will be three Irish folk songs arranged by Alice Parker johnny I Hardly Knew Ye Sing Sing and My Gentle Harp and Feller from Fortune by Harry Somers SOLOIST with the Osipov Balatka Orchestra Ensemble Hopper aboard HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Dennis Hopper was added to the cast of "Apocalypse Vnlvertml SlIrfrttoM presratf In iwds Him irtlh Iho Itao Council on Iho Arts HwMoHiM HOUSTON BALLET'S Holiday Season Spectacular Art booklet Poetry reading PnlMffwV Art Ckufieal SeUrt with symphony orchestra NOV 9 20 at 8 pm $10 $7-50 5850 $500 Endeavors in Humanity Press is preparing an art book entitled "Black and WhiteDay and Night" a 50-page booklet written and illustrated by 25-year-old artist Hal Marcus He calls the book "artword portraits" because it combines words with art Inside arc 35 black and white reproductions five poems one short story two fold-outs and one color brochure Publisher Daniel Conway says it will be published in a limited edition of 500 "a first for our press" It will be available by Christmas Tickets and reservations Civic Center Box Office 544-6573 Mail orders accepted Civic Center Theatre Poems published To Our Customers!
