women's team The UT El Paso women's basketball ranks were thinned last week with the expulsions of three players-one of them a starter-ftom the team. Starting guard Judy Marsh, the team's quarterback on the court, and forward-guards Linda Bagby and Cathy Dickason were removed from the roster Jan. 25 by Head Coach Carol' Ammerman. According to Assistant Coach Wayne Thornton, it was the first time anyone had been cut from the squad in three years. The trio wished to express their side of the incident, so they were interviewed at a local eatery Friday night after watching the Miners' 65-55 loss to New Mexico from the stands.

The affair began, they said, at a team meeting organized Sunday afternoon after the squads' 67-56 setback at the hands of Utah State-the Miners' first home loss of the season. The theme of the meeting, the girls said, was the reserves felt they had enough self-confidence to play in the Intermountain Conference. The topic interested Judy as well, because "I was real tired towards the end of the game (Utah State), and I wasn't playing well and I felt that somebody else could have come off the bench and maybe done a better job than 1 was doing." Cathy emphasized that "We never questioned her (the' coach's) coaching, her tactics or any thing like that." As a result of the meeting, the team held a full scrimmage under game conditions Monday afternoon. The reserves played an excellent "game" against the starters, the trio agreed, with Cathy and Judy pointing out that Linda "was high scorer." "It was totally unexpected," Cathy felt, adding her belief that "she (Ammerman) wanted to be able to say 'I told you The former players said it was they were supposedly dismissed because they were "unhappy," when "in fact we really weren't." Linda, especially, said, "1 was really bubbly after the scrimmage because I had played so well." Judy, a senior, is no longer eligible to play intercollegiate basketball, which she said was the' thing that disappointed her most. "1 really wanted to have a good season to finish with." Cathy, a sophomore, has two more years of eligibility remaining, but said "I can't afford to transfer." Linda is a junior, and she said she- would like to go elsewhere for her final year.

Waigwa 2nd in NY For the second time in the young 1977 indoor track, season, UT El Paso distance runner Wilson Waigwa turned in a first-rate effort but was forced to settle for a second-place finish. Waigwa, whose 3:59.7 mile performance two weeks ago in Los Angeles was not quite enough to beat Brigham Young's Paul Cummings, defeated ace miler Filbert Bayi Friday in the Millrose Games mile in New York City, but was unable to overtake Irishman Eamonn Coghlan of Villanova. Coghlan, the defending NCAA outdoor champion, won the event with a time of 4:00.2 with Waigwa right on his heels at 4:00.5. Bayi, the world record holder for 1,500 meter, finished third at 4:01.8, while Marty Liquori was fourth at 4:02.0 and Cummings fifth with a 4:03.1 clocking. Waigwa captured the week at San Francisco's Examiner Games with an NCAA record time of 7:58.1.

Cummings bolted out to the lead early and held it for the first three-quarters of the race. Bayi and Cummings then traded the front position briefly before Coghlan assumed command for good, covering the final 440 yards in 57 seconds flat. As- is his custom, Waigwa started out in last place, then moved up to third by the halfway mark. "He was in good position" at that point, said UTEP Assistant Track Coach Ted McLaughlin. "He (Waigwa) ran a helluva last quarter but he just couldn't catch Coghlan.

It was a great finish but he never picked anything up on Coghlan." Waigwa began and ended the last quarter 0.3 second behind the winner. "For the third straight week Wilson has put on a great show," McLaughlin said, adding "Any time you beat Bayi that's something." Ms. Ammerman, when contacted, said "I did what I thought was best for the she added, "I think I have a right to do as the coach. If the team was running things it -might be different, but I'm running the team." She said that what transpired at the team meeting was "confidential between me and the team," concluding, "A lot of people should have done some thinking before talking." The Miners, 8-8 overall and 1-5 in IMC play, visit BYU and Utah Thursday and Friday in their final road games of the season.
