As a freshman at UNC, she played in 18 games and scored 10 goals. Her first collegiate tally came against Methodist. She earned an all-South selection last year and was named to the ACC Invitational all-tournament team. This past summer was a busy one for Hegstad.

In July she tried out for and made the Norwegian national team, playing for them in the North America's Cup in Minneapolis. After a superb showing there, the Norwegian team invited Hegstad back to play for them again two weeks ago. She flew to Finland and participated for her native Norway against the Fins in a trial World Cup match. "What happened there were things I never expected," she said. "It was a dream come true." Hegstad scored a goal and was selected as the game's MVP.

Her inspired play helped Norway battle Finland to a 3-3 standoff. "Ill never forget scoring against Finland," she said. "It was the goal of my dreams." This season Hegstad has been a dominant scoring force for the Tar Heels. Against Methodist, she erupted for three of the four goals she has scored this season. Hegstad: is a very versatile player who is capable of playing any position on the field.

"It's more fun to play forward because of the publicity," she said. "But I really enjoyed playing defense' on last year's national championship team." Her goal for this year is simple: help propel North Carolina to yet another national championship. "Winning the NCAA last year was very fun," she said. "It was much more gratifying than losing the year before." Hegstad's play has been described as aggressive and exciting. "She plays with such great offensive and defensive intensity, and that's what sets her apart as a player," Dorrance said.

Describing her own style of play, Hegstad a technical, tough soccer player." Although Hegstad is not the fastest player, the best passer or the best defender, she gets the job done. As long as she continues to make all the right moves, North Carolina will remain an odds-on favorite to win its sixth national championship in the last seven years. By ROBERT D'ARRUDA Staff Writer At first glance, Birthe Hegstad appears to be your ordinary 5-6, 130-pound junior. But first glances are often deceiving. Hegstad, originally from Norway, happens to be one of the finest women's soccer players on the No.

1-rated women's soccer team in the nation. Last year, despite having to adjust to a new position, Hegstad earned second-team All-America honors as a back for the Tar Heels. With the loss to graduation of outstanding forwards like April Heinrichs and Marcia McDermott, UNC coach Anson Dorrance decided to move Hegstad back to forward, her natural position. She is a potent offensive threat, and currently ranks 18th on North Carolina's all-time scoring list with 50 points. As Dorrance said, "Birthe is one of the most creative players weVe ever had." Hegstad has been playing soccer since the fourth grade.

"All the guys asked me to play on their team," she said, "and ever since I've been playing soccer." In high school, the Great Falls, Hegstad (center) breaks downfield in an early-season road game Top 3 prep hoopster Dbm, Martin Very questionable' UNC's All-American forward Birthe Dean-lands By PATTON McDOWELL Assistant SpofcEditor The UNC basketball program received a tremendous boost for the future over the weekend when prep superstar Kenny Williams verbally committed to play for the Tar Heels. Williams, a 6-10, 220-pound senior forward from Elizabeth City Northeastern High School, said his decision to come to Chapel Hill has been a long time in the making. "It has always been a dream of mine to play for Carolina," Williams said. UI knew I wanted to play for a top-notch ACC school, and UNC will really help me develop for the future." Williams first came to the attention of the UNC coaching staff when he attended the Dean Smith Basketball Camp in Chapel Hill after his ninth-grade year. Even then, comparisons were made between Williams and a young James Worthy.

Williams did indeed meet the expectations of the coaching staff, although possibly sooner than they a "Our running game hasn't been that bad this year. Our only problem is to get a guy back there who is going to stay there. WeVe been playing musical tailbacks all season." Dorn, a sophomore who sprained his right ankle while rushing for 165 yards in the Tar Heels' season-opening win over Illinois, has missed two of UNC's three games since then. He missed the Oklahoma game and played in the second half against Georgia Tech before sitting out a 45-14 drubbing of Navy. The same injury caused Dorn to miss half his senior season in high schools Martin, a freshman, started the Tech game after an impressive outing off the bench against Oklahoma.

He expected. Williams averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds a game as sophomore for Northeastern. His dramatic season was highlighted by first-team all-state honors and the MVP award at the Superstar Classic tournament in Norfolk, where he outshined such notables as then high-school senior J.R. Reid and then-sophomore Alonzo Mourning, widely acclaimed today as the top high school player in the country. Academic problems forced Williams to spend his junior year at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy where he once again led his team in scoring and rebounding as well as to a 29-0 record.

Fork Union coach Fletcher Arritt, under whose tutelage current NBA players Melvin Turpin and Chris Washburn developed, had nothing but praise for Williams. "Kenny is the best player I have ever seen," Arritt said. "He is good in every aspect of the game, but is an exceptional shooter and leaper. Washburn was not even close to being as good." -freshmen to show their stuff; as it took the Tar Heels less than an hour to defeat the Wahoos in three games, 15-9, 15-3, 15-0. Clark Francis of "Hoop Scoop" magazine ranked Williams as the third-best high school player in the country on the Nike Dream Team. All this despite the fact Williams has not attended any of the national all-star camps that enhance reputations. In the week preceding his announcement, Williams was visited at home on consecutive days by Georgetown's John Thompson, Maryland's Bob Wade, N.C.

State's Jim Valvano, as well as coach Smith. In his official announcement Monday, Williams said he had narrowed his final list to just two schools State and UNC. But according to Northeastern coach Carl Harris, Williams' decision was fairly easy. "He wanted to commit early (to UNC) so as not to lead anybody on," Harris said. Williams will make his decision official during the early signing period, Nov.

Super sophomore Sharon German also showed her incredible hitting form, leading the team with six murderously accurate kills in the second game alone, and 14 for the night. Head coach Peggy Bradley-Doppes was very pleased with her team's work for the night, saying "the kids really pushed and were very intense tonight.

"Eric played better last week," Crum said. "The main thing is that he held onto the football.

You never question the effort with him. It's just that sometimes he leaves the ball behind. And that's not a good thing for tailbacks to do." Apply ASAP, 200 Plant Road, By MIKE BERARDINO Assistant Sports Editor If you're looking for a good game of "musical tailbacks," don't even think of asking Dick Crum to play. He's had enough already. The UNC coach announced Tuesday that the nagging injuries which kept the Tar Heels' top two tailbacks, Torin Dora and Kennard Martin, out of last Saturday's Navy game are a good bet to sideline the pair again for the upcoming tilt with Auburn.

"If I was going to bet, I would bet that you won't see either of them," Crum told reporters at his weekly press conference. "Both Torin and Kennard are very questionable. Right now, we expect to start Eric Starr, with Reggie Clark also available. Classified Info The Daily Tar Heel doe not accept cash for payment of classified advertising.
