Spotlight Santa Cruz Sentinel Friday, March 11, 193811 Bless the Bammies uxp. um -J-iJArf'm 1. -1 i-jewm- "Star the legend lives on Trekkie alert! fv 1 -A Star Trek Fest beams into town for shows tonight Sheila Bammy Awards show performer Star-studded lineup highlights 11th edition of Bay Area Music Awards He is currently writing a screenplay still in the working stages in between TV appearances. He is also a supporter of the Cleveland Indians baseball team. "The Indians are good for a pennant every 40 years And as you know, they're past due." Novello also did some memorable TV ads for the San Francisco Giants a few years back, but is hestitant to make a prediction about the team's chances.

"I don't know, they may win. they may lose. It all depends on how they do." The Bammy gig was too good to pass up, Novello said "I've always been a big fan of the San Francisco music scene," he said. "This year. I was free and wanted to do it.

I have friends in the Starship and Huey Lewis and the News. I've worked with them in the business and I support them. I've worked with just about everybody around here over the years. I've always been opening (shows) for musicians." Novello's own musical credits are limited, though. "I did do 'MacArthur Park' in Italian," he said.

This year's Bammy show looks to be the biggest and best ever, with live performances by Michael Bolton (singing "Dock of the past and present members of Journey, Sheila and her father Pete Escovedo, Chris Isaak, John Fogerty, Hot Tuna, Carlos Santana, members of the Grateful Dead and Huey Lewis and the News, Camper Van Beethoven, Bonnie Hayes and the Wild Combo, and the Surf MCs. In addition to Father Guido. guest hosts and presenters will include Joe and Jennifer Montana, Bob Sarlatte, Eddie Money, Steve Wozniak, Nina Blackwood and MTV's Julie Brown. It is a far cry from the first Bammy show, said Bay Area Music magazine publisher Dennis Erokan, founder of the event. "The first year, we thought that we were just going to do it for one year.

We had no way to predict the success of the thing on the scale that it's been. It was just a promotional vehicle for BAM magazine," Erokan said. The music awards have really brought the Bay Area music community together over the past decade, Erokan said. "The musicans never get to see each other during the year. They're all playing on tour.

I expected the fans would like the idea, but the musicians have been totally into it, too. They schedule their tours so they have time to come back to the Bammies. Lacy J. Dalton (of Santa Cruz) comes to the Bammies every year, then goes back on tour. It's an honor that she would do something like that," Erokan said.

This year's show benefits the Rock and Roll Museum project. "The museum is on its own schedule," said Erokan. "There's a lot of fabulous things in the works. The board of directors has a very high-powered, agressive campaign. "As far as the Bammies go, my main concern is to continue to put on a show that the fans and the musicians find exciting," Erokan said.

"It became the most popular syndicated show.

It got better ratings than when it was first aired." The syndicated Star Trek' is now in prime-time and fringe prime-time slots throughout the country, and in many cases it's winning the ratings battle against new series. Lukas estimates that there are presently some 100 science-fiction festivals a year in America, and 700-800 fan clubs of various kinds. Of course. Trekkies are in the thick of all them, and numerous organization are devoted exclusively to the "Star Trek" legacy. "It was a really phenomenal show, and now you've got a whole new generation of kids enjoying it in syndication along with the baby boomers, like myself, who have followed it since the beginning.

The growth factor's been incredible," Lukas said. For those hesitant to get caught in the middle of a convention aimed at merchandising. Lukas assures us that the Star Trek Fest is based on entertainment rather than cheap exploitation: souvenirs are not among the show's features. "It's a really fun show. It's a good way to get 'Star Trek' fans together, but it's not a convention.

It's more of a film festival; we offer all the different facets of Star Trek' on film." In other words, one doesn't have to be a fanatic to enjoy the show. And what about fans of "Star Trek: the Next Generation Lukas says that the Star Trek Fest is aimed solely at the original version. However, he was unwilling to compare the new version with William Shatner's bunch; in his opinion, they're apples and oranges. "Nothing can replace the original. We're glad to see the series going, but the jury's still out on this one.

We've gotten used to the original: it's simple to understand and you can watch it a million times and enjoy it." i By PHILIP COLLINS Sentinel Correspondent TREKKIE ALERT! The Starship Enterprise is beams into our galaxy for a brief landing at the Santa Cruz High School Auditorium. The annual. Star Trek Festival lands for two shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. full of vintage "Star Trek" film and television material. Local Trekkies will no doubt be coming out of the woodwork for this rare cosmic stopover.

The Star Trek Fest offers fans a two-hour Trek-a-thon of special, rarely-seen footage. There will be three reels of laughable "Star Trek" bloopers: outtakes from the second television pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone excerpts from popular episodes: an animated version of the series; and a "Star Trek" trivia quiz. The whole "Star Trek" phenomenon it's now 20 years since the show's original airing is extraordinary. As the show's organizer, Bob Lukas, explained, there have been devotees from day one. "The 'Star Trek' following started during the series.

NBC was going to cancel it after its first season in 1967 and they received over a million letters from clubs and individuals. It was the biggest letter-writing campaign in history." Lukas said. The "Star Trek" series carried its weight for two more seasons before getting bumped. Lukas attributes the show's demise to bad programing slots (Friday nights at 10). But in the same breath, Lukas pointed out that the show's cancelation hardly put a damper on its popularity.

By GREG BEEBE Spotlight Editor HEADLINE, March 6, 1988: "Vatican anticipating record budget deficit." The Pope Co. might be $61 8 million short of cash, but Don Novel lo (Father Guido Sarducci of TV fame) who is among the presenters at the 11th annual Bay Area Music Awards isn't crying any tears for Pope John Paul II. "I think if they need money, they should sell the pope's private treasury," cracked Novello from Fairfax, where he was preparing for Saturday night's Bammy blockbuster at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium. "They got so much money. The last time I was there (at the Vatican) I got in to see what they call the pope's private treasury.

They got a solid gold manicure-pedicure set. The room's full of stuff. It looks like Scrooge McDuff's treasury. And they own so much art work. It's hard to feel bad for them," Novello said.

"It's like, 'Give Elvis some money so he won't have to sell one of his cars." I think they support right-wing causes with all their money," Novello laughed. "The treasury has solid gold crosses weighing five kilos. There's cabinets and cabinets full of this stuff." Novello, a former advertising copy writer from Chicago who moved out West in 1972, got his start as "Father Guido Sarducci" on the old "Smothers Brothers Show" in 1975. He subsequently became a semi-regular on "Saturday Night Live" and has released two comedy albums and appeared on several pay-cable specials. He made headlines in 1980 when he was detained by Vatican police during an pervious visit to Rome.

"I got in trouble for taking pictures without permission and for dressing as a priest without being properly ordained," Novello said. Novello's Father Guido Sarducci get-up cost him "seven bucks at a St. Vincent DePaul shop. A friend gave me the hat, and I've bought another suit since then.".
