a srx-' I IBS as (w ts PEOPLE. By Lane Mitchell Staff Writer Kay Kyser, the "old perfesser" of the 1930s and '40s radio show, the "Kollege of Musical Knowledge," died of a heart attack at N.C. Memorial Hospital Tuesday at the age of 79. It was once estimated that over 20 million people tuned into his Wenes-day night radio show, which aired weekly on NBC for 13 years, to hear the "old professor," dressed in academic cap and gown, relay big band music with elementary quiz questions: What did three little fishes do? "They fam and they fam right over the dam." What kind of spurs do you have? "IVe got the spurs that jungle, jangle, jingle." James Kern Kyser, a Rocky Mount Native, stopped performing in 1950 after a World War II travelling music show and returned to his East Franklin Street home with his wife and three children. Kyser attended UNC-Chapel Hill from 1923 to 1928, intending to study law, but became interested in music and entertainment during his five years at the University.

Kyser formed his first dance band, a six-member ensemble that played six numbers, and studied clarinet for a year at the University "before becoming an orchestra leader, radio personality and recording artist. "In his day, he was tefp 10 orchestra leaders in the United States. He moved in the world of Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey and Bob Hope," Kyser's life-time close friend UNC System President William C. Friday said. "The University never had an alumnus who loved the place more than he did," Friday said.

As a student, Kyser served as head cheerleader and participated in campus theatrical groups. After ending his professional career in music, Kyser established music and dramatic arts scholarship at Chapel HiU vv. "These scholarships came at a time when scholarships were hard to come by, so his donation was so appreciated," said Wilton E. Mason, Professor Emeritus of the music department who met Kyser as a freshman in the marching band when Kyser was a senior. "Even then, Kyser was a personality.

You never saw him when he didn't have a joke. He was irrepressible, just as he was on the radio show," Mason said. In 1937, Kyser wrote one of the University's first fight songs, "Tar Heels on Hand." Kyser also contributed to the School of Pharmacy's library expansion and WUNC, UNC's public television station. Kyser's. humanitarianism continued as in 1979, he became a Christian Science lecturer and for several years toured the country speaking about his faith.

"He was very dedicated to his church," Elizabeth M. Holsten, UNC alumni archivist, said, "receiving a distinguished alumni citation in 1973." In 1983, he was named to the honorary position of president of the Christian Science Church. Kyser even considered running for governor of North Carolina, but abandoned the idea, establishing a home in Chapel Hill with his wife, a blue-eyed movie starlet Georgia Ann Carroll, who he married in 1944. One of Kyser's friends, Arnold K. King, assistant to President Friday, said that his death was not a surprise.

"We all knew his health had been failing for about three years now," he said. "The University community is saddened by the loss of one of its most famous alumni," Chancellor Christopher C. Fordham said. "Kay Kyser is a dear friend to countless Americans, who will remember the joy he brought through his music and the spiritual strengthening he gave through his work and religion," Fordham said. iX 23 50 YOU THINK POSITIVE.
