our poverty is the absence of meaning Maybe if we watched a child at play we would regain inferiority No one uses things more intensely than a child When he plays he may often break a toy But when he is tired of playing he drops his toys instantly Unlike wife he never looks back in yearning to give them a last fling He surrenders the things external because he feels a need of recouping the internal Like the prodigal son he into himself" There comes a time when he must make his soul When some grow up they do not drop their toys they keep on playing until they are no longer able to play An Englishman works hard to enjoy his leisure later on in life An American works hard to make more money Authentic happiness comes only to those who do not always seek to spend their libido or their drive or energy Like children they cease their extroversion to discover the peace of introversion This is the meaning of the gospel message: Kingdom of God is it is not in the laying waste of our powers late and soon but a withdrawal for the sake of return Batteries have to be charged so does the soul The total dedication to pleasure and carnality not only exhausts physically more seriously it deflates psychically and spiritually Carl Jung the most profound of all psychiatrists states that when the libido begins to flow inward instead of outward it activates the soul and it becomes born to God Sexual energy when not dissipated is transmuted into spiritual energy This idea is not alien to the Biblical injunction you are guided by the spirit you will not fulfill the desires of your lower nature That nature sets its desires against the spirit while the spirit fights against it They are in conflict with one another so that what you will to do you cannot do" idea of the transmutation of energy from the erotic to the psychical and the spiritual is the key to inner peace Washington Star Syndicate Inc 1976 The flight to the suburbs is to get away from the noise and tumult of cities The young take dope and alcohol to escape from the boredom of existence The of several decades ago like turtles constructed a shell about themselves to immunize them from the irrationality of society They wanted to travel on an uncharted journey with intermittent stops for sex booze and pot In the end they went nowhere Later followed the externalization of craziness in revolution which hardened the rock festivals Completely lacking a goal in life the suubstitute was to be it Woodstock or the Felt Forum But it was not just youth who lost the way Their parents already had settled for a 1-dimensional universe and the consequent rat race They too became bored with a civilization of means and a total absence of ends or purposes The world became a with no exits doors or light Byron the dissipated poetic genius of an earlier time expressed the modern sentiments in his 38th year: days are in the yellow leaf The flowers and fruits of love are gone The worn the canker and the grief are mine alone The fire that is my bosom preys is love as some vocanic ash No torch is kindled at its a funeral What is common to ours and some previous ages is a loss of inferiority We are like an octopus with hundreds of arms reaching out to grab a body a house money and things We are outer-directed instead of inner-directed Life is governed more by having than being We respond to environment rather than struggle in the expectation that something really good will triumph As Chesterton wrote it is not so much that people believe in nothing rather when they no longer believe in God they believe in anything from the stars to the latest cult This spending of our energy on the outside has impoverished the inside America is not suffering from poverty -Sunday WfSTRIDGE Ed Hahn Jr Minister Prospect 3-6150 523-61 By George Cornell A Religion Writer New While speculation continues about the effect of Jimmy Christianity on voters a new survey finds that 34 per cent of adult Americans report they also have had a experience of faith That amounts to one adult in three nationwide nearly 50 million over 18 years old noted George Gallup Jr in reporting results of the survey to a meeting of Episcopalians at their recent convention in Minneapolis Among Protestants he says 48 per cent say they are Christians while 18 per cent of Roman Catholics assert that a turning point at which they committed their lives to Christ This evangelical view which also stresses literal belief in the Bible and the duty to to spread the faith is the movement in the church" gallup says adding: can be considered the of the Four out of 10 Americans 38 per hold that the Bible is the word of God to be taken literally he says while 47 per cent say they have tried to encourage others to believe in Christ This figure is even higher among Protestants alone 58 per cent As for political leanings of the denominations of President Ford an Episcopalian and Jimmy Carter a Southern Baptist Gallup reports Episcopalians favor Ford two-to-one and Baptists favor Carter three-to-one Reporting on a new worldwide survey Gallup says it shows Americans be the most religious people in the world among advanced and that religion continues to play as im portant a role in the lives of Americans as it did 25 years ago Christianity appears to be in trouble in western European Gallup says In the United States 56 per cent say their religious beliefs are to them while in contrast only 27 per cent of western Europeans do so The only major nation in which the importance of religion is greater than the United States is India where 81 per cent say their religious beliefs are In the United States belief in life after death has risen from 68 per cent in 1948 to the present 69 per cent but in western Europe the figure has dropped from 61 per cent to 35 per cent As for belief in the existence of God 94 per cent of Americans profess that belief compared to 89 per cent in Canada 88 per cent in Italy 78 per cent in western Europe and 38 per cent in Japan Significantly Gallup says 31 per cent of Americans say they have had a or mystical a moment of sudden religious insight or compared with only 20 per cent who claimed such an experience of or dramatic 13 years ago of our studies would seem to indicate that God is alive and well in Gallup says all our survey indicators show evidence that the long slide in religious interest and participation of the 1960s has leveled off in the This includes he adds levels of religious belief and practice among young people while persons with a college background are as religious as those with less than a college background LNIl southeast Rowland Jenkins Minister 1 1 :00 Sunday Worship Service Message: MEANING OF EXPERIENCE GRACE HOLY TWYITV Catholics to receive Holy Communion will be the topic of a major address at the fifth National Conference of Separated and Divorced Catholics next week at the University of Notre Dame at South Bend Ind The Rev Anthony McDevitt of Mobile Ala who served as chairman of a study committee of the Canon Law Society of America will speak on the excommunication and Holy Communion issue Last year the society issued a report claiming that American Catholics participating in a marriage not by the church are not excommunicated from the church The church lawyers argued that the American law of excommunication (Third Council of Baltimore 1884) which is not found in the universal law of the church does not apply to these remarried Catholics A representative to the conference from the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas said this is an enormous breakthrough for divorced Catholics who have been taught that they were excluded from the sacraments of the church Representatives from about 200 groups in the United States and Canada attending the conference will elect a new board for the one-year old organization The 3-day conference will begin Friday Other speakers will include
