But after a few de- lay, plans to build a family science camp there are mov- ing forward with the bless- ing of the Army Corps of En- gineers, supporters said re- cently. cotton-picking agency in the world has something to say about the said Joe Cecchini, a longtime Stockton resident whose family co-owns part of the island, eight miles west of Stockton, and has long dreamed of establish- ing a camp there. been a long, tough process, but this is a won- derful area, and a great venue for families and Cecchini said.

Later this summer, newer docks will be put in place at the sliver-shaped island in the middle of the San Joaquin River. That will lead to the next step: con- struction of trails and a campground. Finally, sup- porters will build an inter- pretive center. Wildness remains Most of the island will re- main wild. a rare rem- nant of the old delta that many kids and adults have probably never seen, where water laps up on sandy beaches and herons nest in towering trees.

The San Joaquin County Planning Commission ap- proved the plan in 2007. It took much longer, Cecchini said, to navigate other bu- reaucratic obstacles. Cecchini and friend Frank Rauzi have taken their families to the island for years. Sometimes taken groups of low- income children. They eventually formed the nonprofit California Del- ta Habitat and Education Foundation, which has re- cently teamed up with a more prominent group the Discover the Delta Foun- dation, which is planning a visitor center east of Rio Vis- ta.

Fund-raising for the $3 million to $4 million Spud Island project will be- gin in earnest once the docks are in place, Cecchini said. He estimated that about $250,000 of the fami- money has been spent on the planning process. The Port of Stockton, which owns a portion of the island, continues to lease that land to the habitat foun- dation for $1 a year, making the entire 100-acre island ac- cessible. (Hog and Spud used to be separate islands but became one when the channel dividing them was filled in.) This exactly be a public park. Use will be con- trolled, Cecchini said; fami- lies will be able to make res- ervations to stay in the campground.

something that talked about doing for a long senior marketing manager Janice Curtin said. think we have a great venue for events in addition to being a great shopping The northwest Modesto mall has lined up a dozen vendors of local fruit, vegetables, honey, olive oil and other products, many of them familiar faces at the other farmers markets. More will be added as crops mature, Curtin said. The market will open two hours be- fore the main part of the mall opens each Sunday. It will take place in the area between Restaurant Brew- house and Buffalo Wild Wings.

The mall is organizing the market with the help of Marion Bogdanich, who manages the 10th Street Certified Farmers Market, held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays in downtown Modesto. Bogdanich grows stone fruit and grapes near Patterson, selling some of them at farmers markets at malls in other cities. He said the Vintage Faire market will be especially convenient to north Modesto residents. The city also has the Modesto Certi- fied Farmers Market, 7 a.m.
