Ross S. Sterling THE BAYTOWN SUN Thursday, September 6, 3-AA Rangers shoot for third straight district championship By MICHAEL KEARNS Looking over the roster for the 1984 edition of the Ross S. Sterling Ranger football team, one can't help but notice the absence of more than a few household names that have dotted the starting lineup in past years. Gone are the likes of Hebert, Lewis, Darington, Washington, Barras, Williams, Reed, Mputon, Taylor, Enderli and Little: Graduation does that to high school football programs. That's why it's important for a head coach and his staff to nurture arid prepare the underclassmen.

They will be the torch carriers in future campaigns. And, if last year's under-" classes at RSS can be used as any indication, head coach Bill Bundy may be looking down the barrel of another championship se'ason. Questions remain, though. Can Bundy make it two in row for his short reign, and can his young Rangers go for a third District 23-5A title? The answer lies in the five offensive and two defensive starters returning, and a tremendously talented crop of young players. Bundy's sophomore team of a year ago managed a 10-0 record and a district title, while his two freshmen groups and junior varsity squad had almost equally successful finishes.

Not surprisingly, this year's starting team will have many of the same players that played on that memorable sophomore team, and a lion's share of the best the junior varsity could deliver. And, like last year, Bundy will be counting heavily on his younger players for performances in key positions if he hopes to repeat as the district champion. Leading the offense this fall, will be the perennial all- everything; a player who.has had more adjectives placed in front of his name to describe his exploits than possibly any player in the history of Baytown football, Donovan Forbes, fast becoming a legend, will handle the quarterbacking duties for Bundy for a second straight season. Forbes would need two or three letterman jackets to display the awards he has received for his efforts as a three-sport man at RSS. With his quiet demeanor and humble unselfishness, he surpassed the best while maintaining a sense of dignity and leadership.

Last year he became Sterling's career leading passer, amassing 901 yards in ll games. During that time, he was intercepted on only three occasions in 120 attempts. Forbes led the offense with his passing, running ability and intangible leadership qualities that coaches wish for. But for Forbes to be effective, his supporting cast must carry a large portion of the burden. His offensive linemen, the Sweathogs, have three returning starters from a year ago.

Tackle Jake LeBlanc, along with guards Mark Cowen and Kelly Wilkie, will be pressed early for leadership as two other key spots on the offensive line are manned by somewhat inexperienced players. If Forbes gets the time needed to pass, he will no doubt be seeing a lot of split end Creg Istre, the lone receiver coming back with any negligible varisty experience. In the backf ield Bundy lost one Cowins, Eric, to graduation, but has little brother Tim ready to carry on the traditon at fullback. Cowins will be pressed for the starting job by Lester Felder. At running back, incumbent Steve Weaver will have a rough time securing the starting berth with the likes of Michael Maxey and Earl Guidry.

"We're going to have to execute perfectly," said Bundy of his newly-constructed offense. "We don't have any big-play backs other than Forbes. It will be a ball-control oriented offense this fall. "So, execution will be so important for us. It will have to keep us from doing anything stupid.

We know we don't have the speed, so we'll be a north- and-southteam." Defensively, coordinator Jerry Stewart has but two returning letter winners to build his "Angry Swarm" defense around. Both are In the crucial secondary. They are safety Kelly Price and cornerback Randy Barrios. Nine holes remain In the Ster(See RANGERS, Page 4-AA) BURGER KING BIST OF LUCK THE 1984 SEASON!
