A victory in the conference clash is a for Coach Pat Pattison's defending state champs, after last week's loss to Odessa in the loop opener, and West Texas fans will be watching the tilt closely to see if the Westerners can bounce back with their 1951-52 fire and determi- Game At A Glance WHO: Lubbock Borger Bulldogs. The whammy was brewing in time to bring in 36 correct picks and nine incorrect ones a week ago. That's an average of .800.

The season's record ie 123 correct, 36 incorrect for .769. Here are this week's picks: Notre Dame over Pittsburgh: Pitt has come a long way since the loss tc West Virginia but the Panthers would need a year's timr to get into Notre Dame's class. Alabama over Tennesee: Your TV morsel of the day. Tennessee's offense has been below par all season while Alabama's has been overhauled since that surprise setback by Mississippi Southern. Brewer, an all-round performer, commands much respect with his passing, having completed 14 of 21 attempts for yards. The fuzzy-faced quarterback also scored touchdowns the first two times he carried the ball this season. (Photo Courtesy Univ. Texas News Service.) Brewer Has Turned Into Soph Sensation At Texas University Oct. 16 fanp at the University of Texas are up in the air about Charley Brewer, and It's the sophomore quarterback's air-arm that has them there.

Brewer's effective completed 6 of 9 for 95 yards tnd a Oklahoma and his generalship in the fourth quarter have earned him a well-deserved opportunity for first- string duty against Arkansas this week. The 18-year-oid Lubbock product lifted the Longhorns up by the bootstraps In that fourth quarter, engineering a 78-yard surge, climaxed by Dalono Womack's leaping catch of his toss for the first Texas score. Moments later, Texas took over on the Sooners' 40-yard line and Brewer piutsed to Curlton Massey on the Oklahoma four. That drive was killed by a fumble, but Texas cashed in on that play anyway several moments afterward when Gene Calame was nailed on tie three-yard line. The rise to stardom for the handsome youngster comes as no surprise, for only two years back he was chosen the state's outstanding player, selected to the sportswriters' second All-State team, and named to the All-Southern and All-American elevens.

These honors resulted from his outstanding leadership In directing the Westerners to the state championship. As a freshman last season, Brewer picked up where he left off in high school. He won the quarterbacklng chores in early sessions anc) led the Yearlings to three late-season victories. Passing was his main forte, and he made good on 20 of 43 tosses for 301 yards and one touchdown. Since the LSU encounter this season, the Lubbook soph has moved steadily forward in his quest for starting honors, and moving with him was his teammnte of many Johnny Tatum.

Tatum and Brewer started playing foolhall together In the fourth grade of elementary school, and they have moved forward together ever since. A fullback originally. Tatum moved to center a junior in high school. Beginning then and until the present, Brewer and Tatum have formed a quarterback-center loam In 34 successive games. The string will continue, too, for Tatum this week also was promoted to the first string.

Brewer has developed gradually this season. HP performed capably against ViUanova and even better against Houston with his defensive Improvement keeping pace. His defense against passes reached a high point in the Oklahoma battle when he made two fine and timely interceptions. See SENSATION Page 9 nation. And the 10,000 persons expected at the battle tonight are scheduled to see a drastically revamped Lubbock team in action against Borger.

Pattison gave many of the younger boys on his Westerner squad an opportunity to prove their I ability in rugged scrimmages this I week and several ol the hopefuls responded so well that they earned 1 starting assignments against the Bulldogs. Newcomers In Lineup Heading the list of newcomers in the Lubbock offensive lineup be Fullback Troy Harber, a speedy 190-pound junior who has 'been impressive in his brief appearances this: season; and Ends Neil and Robert Herrin. McMullen, tall 165-pound junior letterman, is one of the best pass receivers on the Lub- squad and Herrin is a very promising 172-pound sophomore. Tom Cobb, stocky little 162- pound junior, may get the nod at left halfback over sophomore Don Hogue. Some of the more a i li a faces in the Westerner forward wall will be operating from new i positions tonight, too, as a result jof the serious injury to regular Guard Clinton Smith in the Odessa game last week.

Haney Jrloves Up Letterman Edward Haney, usually at tackle, will move into Smith's right guard position. Veteran Charles Moore will shift to right tackle, and Wendell Turner will return to the lineup at left tackle. On paper, Lubbock looms as a decisive favorite over the inexperienced, but hefty, Borger eleven. Any mistakes in preparing for the game won't be known until after the game, while the same is true of strong points. The Tigers were due to arrive in Lubbock by chartered plane about 4 p. m. today and will have a light drill 'at Chapman Field tonight. The lone Lubbock toss, which halted the Westerners' winning streak at a record 29 games, was to Odessa last weekend, 27-7. Lost Three Decisions Borger has lost decisions to Duncan, Wichita Falls and Abilene this year, while edging out El Paso Austin in a 20-19 tussle. The Borger losses were by margins of 13-0 to Duncan, 28-0 to Wichita Falls, and 60-0 to Abilene last week.

But Borger's hopes for an upset win over its old South Plains- rival were boosted Thursday by news that ace Quarterback Jim Wiseman, senior letterman who has been sidelined all this season by an ankle injury, will be able to start against the Westerners tonight. Wiseman is expected to provide the sputtering Borger formation attack with the poise and deception that is needed to put The Bulldogs back into the 1-AAAA chase. Wiseman's return will enable Coach Neal i 11 a to shift speedy Jerry Don Eidler to his favorite left halfback position and will give more balance to the Bulldog attack. Bid For Triumph Heading the bulky Borger forward wall will be 205-pound End Ronnie Arendall, 185-pound Tackle Jim McGraw, 195-pound Tackle Charles Mitchell, 196- pound Guard John Hewitt, and 195-pound Center Bob Garrard. Borger will be bidding for its i'irst triumph over the Westerners since 1948, when the Bulldogs took a 20-14 win over Pattison's first Lubbock eleven.

The teams did not play in 1949 or 1950, but the Westerners chalked up a 41-13 victory in 1951 and an exciting 32-20 triumphy in 1952. The Westerners closed out drills for the Borger tussle with a light workout Thursday afternoon at Chapman Field, with all phases of play 11 i a final polishing. Spirit was high during the session, as it has been all this week, and Pdttison sent the youngsters to the showers early. Most of the Westerner squad- men are expected to be available for at least part-time duty tonight, although several of the gridders still are slowed by injuries. Quarterback Mike Wofford, who received a mild concussion in scrimmage early this week, may be held out of action, and veteran Fullback Jimmy Welch may see ticket sales began to take a jump upward and a larger crowd than anticipated probably will be on hand.

Jimmie Wilson, athletic business manager, has moved a block of top reserved seats to the Caprock Hotel lobby, where they will remain on ss.le through Saturday. Three Teams Run 'Defense Yesterday's drill was a mixture of work on offense and work on defense, with such fundamentals as kick-offs, kickoff returns, punting, punt returns, punt protection, passing and pass protection coming in for polishing. All three Tech teams ran. defense against COP plays in dummy scrimmage, while the offensive teams were going through- pass polishing.
