of the University of Kansas School of Medicine said the lengthened term would turn out approximately 5000 more physicians over a 4-year period More than 5000 students are graduated each year in the nation's schools and one full year would be gained through the 12- mcnth schedule every four years The lengthened term will call for an increase in the teaching staff That may prove a problem but the real problem at the Illansas institution is the Kansas law It requires that every person desiring to practice medicine in the state complete four medical courses of not less than six lnonths each no two courses being in the same year Dean Wahl admitted the conflict between the school's plan and the law but said he believed that due to the national emergency the Kansas State Medical board would have power to approve any plan that would be beneficial to the nation's war effort sr VP SPECIAL UNIT Another emergency step at the hospitals is the organization of a group of forty persons trained to meet any known crisis It contains i specialists senior medical students nurses and orderlies It is prepared to set up fifty extra beds at the hospitals The unit is on a 24-hour call basis and is under the direction of Dr Thomas Orr head of the surgical department The Institution is expecting a great number of government medical officers to be enrolled with it soon to specialize in certain branches Dr Wahl said there were comparatively few specialists available for military service and that the government planned to send its own medical officers now in the service to various teaching hospitalsi for training in their special fields' The University of Kansas hospitals has been designated by the government as EvacuatioA hospital No 77 That means a unit of twenty-five physicians on the hospitals' staff has been selected to act as a base-hospital unit wherever it may be called The physicians are commissioned officers in the reserve corps All of the expansions made and planned require
