Hwy. 377 Granbury 817-573-4800 Reiner wins essay contest 1 sponsored by the Comanche Peak Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. The Luminant program aims to increase environmental awareness among Texas Hot dog! Mambrino School fourth graders recently turned a hot dog cookout into a science experiment. Students in science classes taught by Stacey Dudley and Joe Paul Thompson made solar cookers to learn about different forms of energy. The project began with students covering a shoe box with aluminum foil and constructing a skewer.

When the cookers were placed outside in the sun, solar energy cooked the hot dogs. "The sun hit the foil, and it reflected to the hot dog to cook it and produce heat energy from the cooked hot dog," said Dudley. "To the kids' dismay, we did not eat the hot dogs." Mackenzie Reiner, a fifth grader at Oak Woods School, is the winner of an essay contest sponsored by the Lumi-nant Scholar Program. Luminant community relations manager Jan Caldwell presented Reiner with a $1,000 U.S. savings bond to help with future educational expenses.

This marks the second straight win by a fifth grader in Oak Woods teacher Marcia Hamilton's class. In addition, as a fourth grader last school year, Reiner won a separate essay contest Reiner public school students. Beginning in September, fifth graders in several area school districts were invited to enter the essay contest answering the question, "How can I help protect the environment?" FISH DAY!
