Showers, brother of A. G. spent the fore part of the week in the city. Mr. Showers is traveling for the Erie Preserving Company of Buffalo, N.

as physical director for the year. Mr. Kallenberg is at present instructor in the training school in Springfield, and has the reputation of being a first-class athlete. Iowa City is proud of the fact that she has the first college association physical director in the country. L.

B. Patterson is having the first brick building in Iowa City torn down to make way for a new double front. This building was put up by Messrs. Sanxey Mai- com Murray and held the first hardware store in Iowa City. The increasing demand for store rooms makes such an improvement a safe investment.

The plans for the new building which is to he 48x70 feetwill be furnished by L. E. Lyon. John Hanlon, who lost several fingers by coming in contact with a saw in the fence factory some time ago, had the misfortune to lose the greater part of the other hand. As the factory was about to close for the night, Mr.

Hanlon feit of the boxes on the arbor of the saw to see if they were hot. There are three saws on the same shaft and it was in these that his hand was caught. The thumb was nearly taken off, and the back his hand was terribly mangled. It is barely possible that the physician in can save more than the index finger.
