The film was named best movie or miniseries, and Glenda Jackson, who played Sakharov's wife, Yelena Bonner, was named best actress in a movie or miniseries. Awards also went to the director and writer. The awards came two days after Bonner left the Soviet Union to seek medical treatment in the West Her husband had fasted to force the Soviet government to release her from internal exile so that she could be treated. The ACEs. Awards for Cable Excellence, were presented in 43 categories in ceremonies at the Beverly Theatre.

Shelley Duvall and Joe Piscopo were hosts for the show, which will be telecast Friday on superstation WTBS and go to 10,000 cable systems nationwide. It was the first time the awards were presented under the auspices of the National Academy of Cable Programming. A special Golden ACE was presented to Duvall's "Faerie Tale Theatre" for "programming that distinguishes cable communications by its unique contribiution to the viewing public." It was also named best children's series. Art Carney was named best actor in a movie or miniseries for "The Undergrads" on the Disney Channel. The 1985 competition drew 792 entries, from which 223 were nominated by panels of judges in September.
