Suion Ray Spends Night With Grandparents Portable Iron Lung Allows Polio Victim From Lubbock To Make Trips Out Of Town By OPAL DIXOX Avalanche Staff Writer Visits to grandparents and other vacations now are possible for little Susan Bay, thanks to a new type of portable iron lung designed by her father and built in Lubbock. Travel, one of the greatest problems for iron lung patients, is now simply a matter of putting Susan -in her iron lung into the 110 AC current supply, and the other a 12-volt DC motor which can be linked to the battery. The station wagon was wired to carry 12 volts, rather than the normal six volts. There's still another difference. The big iron lung is too wide to ton, with a four-hour stop to see take through most residence Susan's and Lanny's maternal grandparents, Mr.

and Mrs. C. C. Andrews, San Angelo, and an overnight visit with their paternal grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs.

W. P. Ray, Comyn. The new iron lung weighs about 135 pounds and can be carried, with Susan in it, by two men. The usual iron lung, in which she has spent most of the time family station wagon "and con-1 since she was stricken with bul- necting the iron lung motor to bar polio in February, 1952, the station wagon battery.

Then It's only as far to grand' mother's and granddaddy's house as the map says, without the problems of transporting and providing electric current for the weighty normal-size iron lung. weighs about 900 pounds and requires 8 to 10 men to transport it. The difference doesn't stop there. A moving van normally is required to transport a normal' Susan and Jier brother, Lanny, and her parents, the Rev. and Mrs.

Cecil A. Ray, 3302 Amherst have made one trip since the portable iron lung was built. They went to the Southwest Resperiatory Center at Hous- size lung to and from a train or airplane in which iron lung patients usually travel on necessary trips. Throughout travel, 110 AC electric current supply must be available. The portable Iron lung has two separate motors, one for use with By M.

Norvel Young What Does The Bible Say? A Judge Trembles Before A Gospel Preacher! Frequently we find prisoners tremeblinj: before the words of the Judge on the bench. But today in our study of Acts 24 we find the judge, Felix, trembling before his prisoner, What is the cause of this sur-O 11 the Apostle Paul. prising situation? temperance, and judgment come. "What a moving sermon that must have been to bring the hardened judge to such alarm that he "trembled!" "Righteousness" will not be saved by mere lectures on how to be well adjusted to our environment. We need more preachers with the simple gospel of Christ who "knowing the terror of the Lord" persuade men to obey God. Paul prophe- cied that the Lord Jesus is ing again "in flaming fire tak- I ing vengeance on them that know doors, but the portable lung is narrower. The Rev.

Mr. Ray also designed and helped construct a rocking chair, light enough to be moved while Susan is rocking. The rocking chair, which is a breathing aid, was developed from the idea of the rocking bed, which is used extensively by polio patients. Doctors Interested The rocking chair attracted even more interest among doctors at Houston than did the portable iron lung, perhaps because of present emphasis on rocking as a breathing aid. Photographs were made at the respiratory center of both and are to be sent to equipment personnel of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.

The rocking bed, too, answers a need for Susan but the portable lung opens up new horizons. "Now we can go visiting when we get ready to," said Mrs. Ray. "It makes possible taking san on vacation and on trips to I our Baptist camp," said the Rev. I Mr.

Ray, who is pastor of Arnett! Benson Baptist Church. They I plan to take Susan to the Plains Baptist Assembly encampment near Floydada once or twice this summer. They do not plan many trips during the summer, because of the heat, and expect to make out-of-town trips in cooler weather in the fall and spring. Susan uses the full-size iron lung most of the time in the house. A sheet metal concern made the shell part in the shape of a half circle. Firemen helped with mechanical parts of the portable lung, and a member of the Rev. Mr. Ray's church, M.
