Since printing the Health Monthly for Jane, a little after the middle of May, three remarkable men have pass- away; men who have made indelible foot-prints on the sands of time.

We refer to Stephen Pearl Andrews, a notice of whose death is Riven in another place, to Dr. Dio Lewis, well known to the intelligent reading public throughout the United States for what he has done in educating the people in the laws of health and hygiene, and Col. Richard M. Hoe, who stands at the head of the list of inventors for what he has done to improve the printing press. In the first two we had men of ideas well worth printing and in the last named we had an inventor who could materialize ideas by running them through lightning presses.

The regret is that the world was not prepared to receive the materialized ideas of men like Mr. Andrews and Dr. Lewis and for the present at least, Mr. Hoe's wonderful inventions are mainly nsed in disseminating mere stuff which pleases the popular palate. We are able, however, to extract from our mammoth journals something of the current history of the day and consequently Mr.

The records, in the archives of the confederacy at the war department show that a national flag was not adopted until May 1, 1863, or more than two years after the conflict began. Of all these designs only a few are worthy of preservation. A disposition to cling to the "stars and stripes" is observable throughout though in a few instances there are bold departures.

Beyond dispute the handsomest design was sent by a lady of Winnsboro, S. C. It is a flag of three wide stripes the outside ones blue, the middle one white. A square field, the height of the upper bars, is red, and contains seven stars with what the lady describes as "a crescent moon" in the center. If the Mohammedan emblem were omitted, the design would be perfect The effect is very pretty.

A design from Richmond, presents a flag of three broad stripes in the order of red, blue and white, with thirteen white stars in the central or blue stripe. Two striking suggestions are made by a patriot of Loundesboro. Both flags are wholly blue and white. The first is quite like "the old flag" in design, having seven blue and six white stripes. In the blue field is a dove resting on a palm branch.

Over the dove's head are six stars. The second picture has eight blue and seven white stripes, with an inverted crescent in the field and the sams six stars. The scarcity of stars indicates that this nesign was an early product of the rebellion. Another drawing sent from Charleston is thus heraldically described by the inventor: "On a crimson field a deep yellow sun with a ray for each state, half risen from a blue sea. The sea to be one-third the Our specialists, remove cataract from the eve, thereby curing blindness.

Notwithstanding the peculiarity ot this offer, it was better to accept than to die. Mr. Klio took two rolls of gold coin from his pocket and left with a smile on his face worthy of Tallyrand.

A fortnight afterwards Casper had re- sumed his former mode of life. In the mean, time one thing caused him uneasiness. From the window of a fashionable restaurant, or from the balcony of a friend's house, he occasionally thought he saw a little attentive silhouette, which would suddenly disappear behind a carriage, or cab the silhouette ot Mr. Klic. What was he doing, and why was he thus keeping watch in the street? He had but too much ot an explanation.
