"It's Batman!" And so it was Wednesday night on ABC. The daring nemesis of evil-doers strode into the plush grounds with all the casual authority Roddy McDowell entering camp, Arthur. (Robin, the Boy Wonder, accompanied his friend and mentor to the club, but was left sulking in the Batmobile when it turned out he was too young to gain admittance. In short, "Batman" would appear to have the sort of diversified general appeal that network program executives dream about but seldom achieve. I shall be very surprised if the series fails to become one of the big hits of the year. Of course, the show will be viewed with disdain by some, alarm by others and bewilderment by many more.

After all, the literal adaptation of a comic book character as TV entertainment IS sort of unsettling, when you think about it. And few will deny that the TV Batman is strikingly faithful to the original. The characters, style and physical detail of Bob Kane's strip have been transferred to the new medium with remarkable accuracy and careand exuberant imagination. However, as the sequence described above would indicate, "Batman" is more than just a re-created comic book, although it is played straight enough so the kiddies won't know the difference. BOTH LEADS ADMIRABLY CAST I don't know how long it will last, but at least at the outset, "Batman" is not just a put-on, not just a spoof but genuine satire with a sublety rarely encountered on the tube.

The Lorenzo Semple Jr. script for the opening episode went beyond "hip," "camp" and "pop" to word that hasn't been discovered yet. people connected with the show obviously are having a great time making it, and all the splendid technical skills and resources of television are utilized to the fullest to assure production quality of a high The color photography and special effects are brilliantly handled. He attended St. Thomas parochial school in Pilot Point and studied for 12 years at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Worthington, Ohio. He was ordained a priest May 30, 1943. His first assignment was as assistant pastor at Patrick's Co-Cathedral in Fort Worth, where he remained three years. Later he was at St.

Mary's in Sherman and at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dallas. He became administrator of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dallas in 1953, and pastor of St. Augustine's in Dallas in 1956. Since 1962, he has been pastor of Sacred Heart Cathedral.

He was named vice chancellor of the diocese in March 1949, and chancellor in 1952. He was elevated to a papal lain in February 1961, with the title of very reverend monsignor, and in January 1962 became vicar general of the diocese. The bishop elect issued a statement accepting the appointment, and added that he is ready to work with the priests laity of the San Angelo diocese.
