Call 358-0824 24 hours a day Ocilla about halfway between Macon and the Florida boundary is just a dot on the map of Georgia but Prater got around before deciding to stay put She was bom June 6 1902 at Kingstree SC and grew up in Georgia In the early 1920s she married Dave Prater Sr a farmer and barber They lived in Sarasota Melbourne and other spots in Florida and Georgia before settling in Irwin County After her husband died in 1944 she brought up their children herself stressing strong religious values Her influence extended a long way from Ocilla reaching 33 grandchildren 62 great-grandchildren and 30 great-greatgrandchildren was the rock of our family our moral Constance Prater said Her sister Ethel still lives in Ocilla Two others Alice Garcia and Susie Williams live in Fort Pierce The other surviving children are James Prater Jannie Poole Bertha McMath Evelyn Maxwell Lillie Demps Helen Deberry Robert Prater and Sammie Prater all of Miami Services are scheduled for this afternoon at the Davis Funeral Home in Ocilla a meeting of the Willing Workers Union Friendship and kinship with Mary Pressley Prater brought more than the customary intangible rewards A gift of one of her homemade quilts made from fabric swatches she collected for many years was considered a high honor So was one of her lemon cheesecakes but those last as long One of her children was famous: soul singer Dave Prater of the 1960s duet Sam and Dave With partner Sam Moore he won a Grammy award in 1967 for the hit Soul Man a classic that is still performed Other hits included When Wrong With My Baby Hold On Coming You Know Like I Know and Take What 1 Want Dave Prater died in a traffic accident in 1988 Another child died in infancy A son Bruce died last year Eight children survive their mother including James Prater who came to Miami in 1948 was the Constance Prater said cousin told him there were plenty of jobs that paid good money He got a job in the construction industry building heard of Ocilla the hometown in South Georgia Her sisters and brothers moved also to Miami and Fort Pierce Prater was 94 when she died Saturday still in Irwin County after 60 years always asked her to move here to be with all her children but she never wanted to leave said Constance Prater a grand- daughter is my the grandmother would always reply The little farming town meant a lot to her She watched local children growing up in the 1960s and when she was a cook in the cafeteria at Irwin County Middle School She was a member of the Home Protection Lodge and a busy member of Mount Olive AME Church where she had served as a missionary stewardess and church treasurer Independent energetic and active to the end she suffered a heart attack Saturday while preparing food to bring the next day years in the Army medical corps during World War II He received and degrees from Fisk University in Nashville In 1946 he married Viva Spearman a dietitian and teacher He taught zoology at Florida A University and then he got his chance to study medicine in the then-segregated South He was accepted into Meharry Medical College which at the time was one of the few places in the country for blacks to train as doctors Coleman earned his medical degree in 1955 would joke that infants knew what time to He knew that well after helping hundreds of women through childbirth in three decades as a well-known North Dade obste-b trician and gynecologist Coleman died Sunday of a heart attack He was 77 was a very calm said his daughter Viva Coleman really ruffled his feath ers TREACY HUGH STEVEN Fernando Zea Jr In 1961 she met and married her second husband Robert Eugene Hardesty They were divorced seven years later Together they had three children Seeking a new life away from the difficult memories of Oklahoma Wooten traveled across the United States in search of the perfect home for her children most outstanding characteristic was her selfless devotion to her said -r Jeannine Wooten went out of her way to help -v4er employers at Silver VPaint Hardware She worked there as a bookkeeper but if her boss needed a letter written or help with his medicines 7 -she quickly did it 2 But she considered this her legacy: her four chil- dren Wooten died Monday night of lung cancer She -was 59 Bom in Tulsa Okla in 1938 she and her two siblings endured a difficult and poverty-stricken childhood marked by one foster home after another Despite that troubled start Wooten learned to make the best of life her oldest son Luis Finally in 1982 she stopped in Miami Beach and went to work as a bookkeeper for Silver Paint Hardware 653 Collins Ave always put everyone in front of herself for said Michael Silverman store owner always went out of her way to do that little Wooten is survived by
