12500- 000 Baptists he will see that two-thirds of them are in the territory of this convention A Call for Prayar Mayor Quin issued a proclamation last week calling upon the people of this city and community to "devote a moment to silent prayer at noon each day asking God's blessing upon our people and especially upon those who have been called into the armed forces of our country to give their lives if need be for the preservation of our ideals of a democratic government and asking Divine guidance for those charged with responsibility of directing the affairs of our Nation during this emergency" The convention is definitely complying with this suggestion breaking in on any program for this purpose At the last meeting of the Convention a committee was appointed to report on the establishment of a Baptist daily newspaper at Washington The committee's report was adverse saying: "The cost of such a proposal would be excessive in the beginning and a considerable 'subsidy would be necessary to keep such a paper going for a period of years Southern Baptists have no such funds available Wartime priorities and shortages would make it impossible to start on such a program now even if it were wise We are in the midst of a campaign now to support our state denominational papers and it seems to us that all our efforts at present should be directed to building up their circulation and to providing adequate support for the monthly magazines already in existence" Visitors Occupy Pulpits The convention having no session Sunday morning the visiting preachers not only occupied all the Baptist pulpits but some 65 pulpits of other denominations Because Travis Park Methodist Church is just across the street from my hotel and because I like the Methodists I worshiped with them Sunday morning This church in the very heart of San Antonio's business section is one of its old landmarks I suspect that when they bought the lot on which the church stands they paid probably $1000 for it It would now no doubt sell for a half million The music for the convention is under the direction of Sellars and Carnett of the music department of the Baptist Bible Institute One of the most attractive musical features has been a male chorus of 100 voices from the First Baptist Church under the direction of Troy Campbell chorister of the church One wonders how he gets together such a bunch of men who have time and talent for training for such a performance Speaking of singing McKinney at the head of the department of church music of the Sunday School Board is being cordially welcomed back to Texas where he has spent most of his public life The fact of his receiving recently the degree of doctor of music is especially gratifying to his musical co-laborers throughout the country Under the direction of Rev Roland Leavell head of the evangelistic department speakers from the convention have addressed many of the city schools the civic clubs and various industrial institutions besides holding a daily open air meeting addressed by leading preachers on the Alamo Plaza Hale Hamilton 59 Screen Actor Dies LONDON May 19 Vichy radio said Monday night that
