a I nU Bee Wednesday, July 25, 2007 The Sacramento OBITUARIES Kovacs, cinematographer on 'Easy Rider' Gen. Sidney Novaresi commanded at McClellan Retired Maj. Gen. Sidney S. Novaresi, a decorated Air Force pilot who flew in three U.S.

wars, commanded the 4th Air Force at McClellan Air Force Base and became president of a California taxpayers group, died Sunday. He was 85. The cause was a long-term liver illness, said his daughter, Cathy Novaresi. Mr. Novaresi rose from buck private to two-star general during a lifetime of active and reserve military duty and community service.

He joined the California National Guard in high school in 1939 and became a fighter pilot on 125 combat missions in World War II. At McClellan, he flew C-124 supply planes to Vietnam before heading the largest reserve command in the Air Force for six years. After retiring in 1982, he spearheaded development of the McClellan Aviation Museum and served since 1992 as president of People's Advocate, a statewide taxpayers group. "He was an example of someone who always gave," said Jim Hopp, retired Air Force major general and president of the Aerospace Museum of California. "He was driven by a love of community and a strong desire to serve.

That's what you typically find of people of that generation." Family and friends said Mr. Novaresi was led to serve by a lifelong love of flying. As a boy in Stockton, he used his paper route earnings to buy airplane rides from local airport pilots, his daughter said. He earned his pilot's wings and commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He became a command pilot with more than 17,000 hours flying military and civilian planes, including P-47 Thunderbolts in dogfights over the Pacific By Robert D.

In April, on the first night of Passover, 33-year-old Annette Brodovsky was struck and killed by a suspected drunken driver. Brodovsky was a mother of two and pregnant when she was struck while standing on a lawn in an Arden Arcade neighborhood. She was active in the Jewish community and known as a talented violinist and giving teacher. Known for his constant smile, Ostrow "had a zest for life," said his daughter, Nancy Ostrow.

"He was very social and very involved. He lived his life to the fullest." Ostrow was deeply involved within the Jewish community, especially at the Mosaic Law Congregation in the Arden area. He also was a devoted family man and passed on to his children and grandchildren his love of the arts and music. Those characteristics were combined in one of his latest endeavors the endowment, along with two other families, of a new library and lecture hall at Mosaic Law.
