-C-23 Nov. 12, 1978 THI SUN James Whitmore stars in 'The Word tonight on CBS r. 1 By JERRY BUCK AP Television Wrlttr HOLLYWOOD In the dimly lighted dubbing studio, James Whitmore watched a fuzzy black and white image of himself on the screen and waited for his dialogue cue. It came through an earphone he held clasped to the side of his head. At the right moment, he said.

"Well, that's terrible." Whitmore was duplicating dialogue ruined by traffic noises outside the British Museum in London, where he and actor Roland Culver had filmed a scene for the CBS miniseries "The Word." The eight-hour series, which also stars David Janssen and Florlnda Bolkan, begins tonight on CBS, continuing nightly through Wednesday. The series, adapted from the novel by Irving Wallace, was directed by Richard Lang in London, Amsterdam, Rome, New York and Hollywood. It's important to recognize that an awful lot of luck is Involved." Whitmore is the veteran of three television series. He said he is proud of "The Law and Mr. Jones." but called "My Friend Tony" and "Temperatures Rising" mistakes.

"I'd rather not do another, but you never know in this business," he declared. One son, James Whitmore starred in the NBC series "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and recently had a guest star role in ABC's "Battlestar Galactica." Whitmore said, "I'd love to work with him. I'm fond of him. He's a good guy." Another son, Dan, is with the U.S. Forestry Service, and a third son, Stephen, just graduated from college.

Whitmore graduated from Yale and was about to enter Harvard Law School when World War II began. He spent 4V years as a combat platoon leader in the Marine Corps. By the time he got out of the service his interest had switched to acting. miniseries. "He's a main chance guy," the actor said.

"He has a certain amount of self delusion. He's not totally venal." It is Whitmore's first miniseries and the first thing he's done for television since he played Gen. O.O. Howard in the ABC Theater presentation of "I Will Fight No More Forever." Whitmore also can be seen in "Bully," the movie version of his one-man show about President Theodore Roosevelt. It's his third one-man show, and, he said, his last.

He previously did "Will Rogers' U.S.A." on Broadway, on tour and as a television special. Then, he was President Harry S. Truman in "Give 'Em Hell, Harry." The stage version was also filmed and he was nominated for an Academy Award as best actor in 1975. "You're awfully lucky when a one-man works," he said. "It's a combination of happenstance that works.

Whitmore plays a publisher who is about to bring out a new Bible based on a controversial archaeloglcal discovery that shows Christ did die on the cross, but continued to preach for 19 more years until he was crucified again and rose from the dead. The document is supposedly written by James the Just, brother of Jesus Christ. Janssen plays a cynical public relations man who is hired to promote the new Bible, but begins to doubt the authenticity of the document. He becomes involved in a deadly intrigue, as a number of people, particularly Whitmore, have an interest in seeing that the Bible is not challenged. It is a crackerjack suspense drama that takes the viewer into the worlds of public relations, publishing, religion and archaeology.

There have been few if any recent films that take such breathtaking advantage of foreign locales as director Lang does in "The Word." Whitmore's character is one of the villains of the WHO SAID A RESTAURANT HAS TO BE EXPENSIVE? ttE) FlFKI nTt-IPD DECT A I ID AKITC A CIS fJlM nl HC rn tT?" ft i WE BAKE OUR OWN BREAD AND PREPARE ALL OUR OWN FRESH FOOD YOU'LL RECOGNIZE US WE CATER TO PEOPLE Long after competitive restaurants 'Vie'' Mickey D's still lives on.
