16 Santa Cruz Sentinel' Thursday, January 10, I 1 1980 CBS Captures Weekly Ratings Race $, I 's I 1 NEW YORK (AP) CBS, banking once again on a strong Sunday night lineup, won the networks' weekly ratings competition and edged even closer to front-running ABC in their race for first place for the season to date. CBS' success in the week ending Jan. 6 came with help from the pro football playoffs or without it. Ratings on prime-time programs are determined by the A.C. Nielsen but the networks themselves figure the weekly averages.

For the most recent week, CBS and NBC included in the ratings the tail end of CBS' broadcast of the National Football Conference playoff game between Los Angeles and Tampa Bay, as well as the post-game show, while ABC choose to ignore the sports programming. Counting the game and the post-game program, CBS had the five highest-rated shows and the three most'watched if you take ABC's list. If the game and the post-game show aren't included, CBS' "60 Minutes" is the week's top program, followed by "Dallas" and "Alice." All but "Dallas" air Sunday night. CBS, in any case, finished the week with a rating of 20.2 to 19.7 for runnerup NBC. ABC's rating ranged from 18.8 CBS' figure to 19.1 ABC's.

The networks say that means in an average prime-time minute during the week, 20.2 percent of the homes in the country with television were tuned to CBS. The rating for the football post-game show, No. 1 for the week with the runover portion of game second, was 35.5, with "60 Minutes" third at 32.5. Nielsen says that means of all the homes in the country with television, 35.5 percent saw the sports program, and" 32.5 percent watched at "Dallas," was 14th in the ratings. The week's five lowest-rated shows included two news programs NBC's "Prime Time Saturday" in 58th place and a CBS News special, "The Energy Crunch," 59th and three movies "Stunts Unlimited" on ABC, No.

60, "Orca" on CBS, No. 61, and "The Master Gunfighter" on ABC, No, 62. Here are the week's 10 highest-rated shows: NFL Championship Post-Game, with a rating of 35.5 representing 27.1 million homes, NFL Championship Game, 33.3 or 25.4 million, "60 Minutes," 32.5 or 24.8 million, "Dallas," 27 or 20.6 million, and "Alice," 26 or 19.8 million, all CBS; "Eight is Enough," 25.8 or 19.7 million, ABC; "Dukes of Haziard," 25.7 or 19.6 million, CBS; Orange Bowl, 25.1 or 19.2 million, NBC, and "Three's Company," 24.7 or 18.8 million, and "Mork and Mindy," 24.3 or 18.5 million, both ABC. The next 10 programs: "Benson," ABC; "The Jeffersons," CBS; "Fantasy Island," ABC, and "Knots Landing," CBS, tie; "Barney Miller," ABC; "Taxi," ABC, and "Real People," NBC, tie; "Charlie's Angels," ABC, and "Skag," NBC, tie, and "Sinatra: The First 40 Years," NBC. least part of the newsmagazine.

It was CBS' third No. 1 finish in a row, and the network's sixth in the last eight weeks. NBC finished second for the first time since the week ending Nov. 25. Both CBS and NBC maintain ABC's lead for the season so far is two-tenths of a ratings point 19.3 to 19.1.

ABC says the margin is greater, 19.4 to 18.9. NBC's best effort for the week was the Orange Bowl football game between Oklahoma and Florida State, eighth in the ratings, though the 19th place finish for the three-hour premiere of its newest dramatic series, "Skag," was encouraging to the No. 3 network. CBS scored, meanwhile, with a new series of its own, "Knots Landing." "A severe stomach virus. And he worked all the time. He never quit and it debilitated him completely. He got a bad ulcer and sinusitis and he was really sick, just generally sick, and the doctor said he had to stop." Rumors began to circulate after Garner failed to report for work that he was terminally ill. But a source close to the actor said, "He isn't terminally ill, which is what a lot of people were sort of believing.

He is sick. He'll recover, but it'll take some time." Mrs. Rosenberg said the rumors probably started because Garner had visited the Scripps Medical Center in La Jolla, Calif. She said Garner was now resting at his home. "The Rockford Files" was a consistently popular show, although it was seldom in the Top 10 in the ratings.

It had been a Friday night fixture on NBC since September 1974 although it was once aired briefly on Saturday and closes out with its first and only Thursday appearance. NBC had planned some time ago to move the show to Thursday, but beginning next week its time slot will be filled by a new series, "Skag," starring Karl Maiden. The series shut down production at the end of November when Garner, 52, was unable to report for work at Universal Studios. Garner had already said that this season would be the last for Rockford, who loathed guns and violence but was always dragged into the fray.

He was a little seedy, cut corners, always in trouble with the law, and a perennial loser except when it came to solving his cases. Meta Rosenberg, executive producer of "The Rockford Files," said Garner is suffering from a stomach virus, ulcers and sinusitis. "He had a virus for about (AP Laserphoto) Ol mfj James Gamer is ill. The League met for the next 26 years at its headquarters in the Palace of Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The main goal of the League was to maintain world peace.

In the League's covenant, or constitution, each member nation promised to protect the territory and independence of each other member against attack. But the League could not force its members to help an attacked nation, and its attempts to prevent such attacks during the 1920s and 1930s failed. The United States never joined the League of Nations, which dissolved in 1946, with the founding of the United Nations. DO YOU KNOW Which president campaigned for U.S. membership in the League of Nations? WEDNESDAY'S ANSWER Joan Baez helped promote Bob Dylan's career during the early 1960s.

By Oswald Jacoby and Alan Sontag West would have made two hearts, but it was too dangerous for him to act over South's notrump so he passed and led his four of hearts. South won with dummy's jack and counted tricks. He could come to six in high cards and could make his seventh by leading successfully to his queen of clubs or king of spades.

There was no hurry about choosing which suit to attack. He could take four diamond tricks first so he did just that. Maybe his opponents would make some helpful discards, but no one helped him. East chucked the deuce of spades; West the seven of spades and five of clubs. South studied a while and finally came to the right decision.

He didn't lead either suit. Instead he returned a heart. West cashed four heart tricks while South chucked a club and a spade. Now West had to lead a black card and gave South his seventh trick. Simple, but like most simple things totally effective.

(NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN.) Q. How effective are antihistamines for relieving cold symptoms? My pharmacist told me not to waste my money on remedies that contain these ingredients. He said they're only effective if you have an allergy. But I recently read in a magazine that they can help dry up a runny nose. What's the story? A.

You raise a particularly interesting question. Until recently the collected wisdom had it that antihistamines were not very helpful in relieving the sniffles and sneezes of the common cold. Even the Food and Drug Administration wasn't sure the drugs were effective. But research that has just been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reopens debate on this subject. Doctors at three different medical centers compared the antihistamine Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine) with a placebo (sugar pill).

When used in a dose of 4 mg, four times a day there was some relief of runny nose and sneezing. But overall, the benefits of the antihistamine were not impressive and the response to the sugar pill was surprisingly high. In fact one group of patients obtained greater relief from the placebo (76 percent) than they did from the active drug ia percent). So who's right you or your pharmacist? Well, I would have to conclude that a 4 mg dose of chlorpheniramine such as that recommended in products like Chlor-Trimeton, Coricidin, Co Tylenol and Novahistine may provide some slight improvement in cold symptoms. But the smaller dose that is recommended in drugs like Contac, Comtrex, Triaminicin and Viromed probably won't do very much to silence those sneezes.

Antihistamines can cause side effects in susceptible individuals, even in low doses. Always be wary of drowsiness and blurred vision. Driving can be dangerous, especially if you simultaneously take prescription drugs like Valium or Dalmane. Older men who suffer from an enlarged prostate should avoid these products since they make urination difficult. Overall I would have to conclude that antihistamines are at best only slightly helpful in relieving symptoms of the common cold and then only in a fairly high dose (4 mg).

If I were you I would stick with my pharmacist's recommendation and not waste my money. Q. I am taking a drug called Triavil for psychological depression. It dries out my mouth something terrible. 1 wear dentures and since I've started with this medicine my gums get so painful that I can hardly bear it.

Isn't there something 1 can do to stop this awful dry mouth? A. We received a similar inquiry a few months ago from another reader who also experienced an unpleasant dry mouth from her antidepressant medication. At that time we didn't have much to offer. But a doctor from Houston sent in an article with a helpful hint and maybe his suggestion will provide relief. A saliva substitute solution called VA-OraLube was developed for patients who had to undergo radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.

After treatment they too develop symptoms of dry mouth. A few drops of the liquid are placed in the mouth, swished around and then expectorated. According to doctors at the Houston VA Hospital who tested VA-OraLube on patients receiving antidepressant medications, "Relief of symptoms of dryness was immediate and complete. The duration of lubricant effect varied among patients but generally ranged from one to three hours. No adverse reactions were noted." White we can't vouch for this product it does seem worth a try.

VA-OraLube is only available from Veterans Administration hospitals, but a commercial product called Xero-Lube is quite similar and your pharmacist can order it from First Texas Pharmaceuticals in Dallas.
