by a railroad accident between Nancy and Vezelize Horrible Affair In Kolano County A Han Trie to Kill Hi Wife and then Blashe lliinwelf with a Jealousy the Caase Bird's Landing August Last even ing onr citizens were shocked by the intelligence that an old resident of the county named Weingartner at New Jerusalem? had in an aberration of mind first killed his wife and then committed suicide The Coroner was sent for and Dr Downing being brought into requisition they proceeded to the scene of trouble Reaching there it was found that neither of the supposed dead persons were actually deceased though in imminent danger They were both properly taken care of by Dr Downing and are in a fair way of recovery Inquiry developed the following facts: Weingartner a German of some 50 years of age married to a lady of corresponding age the sister of Wm Krause of this vicinity and also of John Krause of Buisun became jealous of the attentious paid his wife by one Berg a shoemaker and who had not long resided here Borne say he was intoxicated while others assert he was perfectly sober but all agree that he was infuriated by his jealousy He went to his room and made preparations as if to shave himseif He called to his wife as if on some unimportant matter aud when she came seized her by one arm and deliberately drew the razor-blade directly around her throat from ear to ear Ilia firmness of strength was not sufficient to effect his deadly purpose and neither the jugular vein was cut nor the windpipe severed beyond hopes of recovery He proceeded to slash and cut the body of the unfortunate woman in several places one cut being a ghastly slice right through the paim of the left hand made it would appear while Mrs Weingartner was endeavoring to clutch the deadly weapon and stay oft its dreadful blows The children of the parties though the whole aflair was but momentary rushed out and called to John Rugel hutta and Jake Henry that is killing mamma!" Before the required assistance cauie to hand Weingartner had closed the door and had cut and sliced his face neck hands ancl arms till they were almost to be described as mince meat When the door was burst open and the whole neighborhood had gathered in to view the scene of the attempted murder and suicide the view was horrifying The blood of each had spurted over the ceiling and walls and had clotted on the floor The first attention was paid to the woman who as well as her husband under the skillful surgery of Dr Downing appears at present in a fair way to recover 1 ho man's wind-pipe is completely severed just at the larynx but it is hoped that the place may be closed to perfection if his own violence of temper does not hurst the ligaments The whole aflair excites a wide-spread feeling differing with different people as similar matters always do but there was at first so strong a preponderance in favor of lynching Weingartner that there was great difficulty in moral suasion preventing it The oldest child a daughter of some 15 years was so horrified by the occurrence that she went into a violent tit of hysteria and is in perhaps as dangerous condition as her parents THE DEUKIM AVAR BEG I Marysville Begin an Injunction Nutt Again! the Hydraulic Mine Marysville August 5 The City Council by a unanimous vote of its members last night decided to commence an injunction Hanta Crus Courier The History of One of Famone Paintings A rich merchant led Murillo the illus-trions painter one day to the marketplace of Seville and pointing ont to him a yonng girl of 16 of the gypsy race asked him to do her portrait The gypsy girl was so beautiful and looked so picturesque in the midst of the baskets of fruit she was offering for sale and the painter did not hesitate to accept the commission you can paint the picture in a month's said the merchant may name yonr own price for Murillo promised the portrait for the end of the month and asked a hundred golden Philips which the merchant agreed to Murillo glunced once more at the features and form of this beautiful model and then went to see her relation? to ask their permission for the young girl to sit to him The gitana's relations consisted of a very bad-looking man who was her uncle and of a very good-looking man in every sense of the word who was her The artist talked with them for some time and on taking leave of them shook hands cordially with the To the uncle he was somewhat cooler for he had discovered that he was a selfish and avaricious man Murillo had a sitting the very next day and the first stroke of his brush already announced a masterpiece when the merchant entered his studio head will he said the purchaser in a half-patronzing tone am glad it pleases replied Murillo as I have made np my mind to ask you rather more than the sum originally But I told you to mention yonr own expostulated the merchant said a hundred Philips and I agreed to give them to you I do not think yon ought to demand more than that amount am very said Murillo I find that it will he impossible to let you have the picture for less than six hundred If you do not like to give so much there has not been much time kBt yet and you will be able to get some other artist to execute the commission but really 1 sIibII obliged to give it up unless you can afford to remunerate me for my As for affording returned the merchant know that am not poor hut the sum is a large one After all I will not dispute with you about five hundred It is a great deal of money for you to receive but it is not much for me to iew the matter us you said Murillo philosophically let me have the money: That is what I stipulate Bhall have the six said the merchant with something like a sigh will sign an agreement with you for that amount this hy not at suggested Murillo you have resolved to give ho answered the merchant perhaps this evening yon will be more reasonable in your you ave not decided said the painter I am replied the purchaser I prefer not to sign any agreement until this In the evening Murillo informed the merchant gravely and coldly that he could not accept GOO Philips bnt that he must have 1000 Of course the merchant refused point blank iu the first instance Then he hesitated offered seven eight nine hundred and at InHt agreed to give the full thuusand This time a formal agreement was signed At the end of the month the portrait was finished When the merchant came to take it away he found the original standing before it in full dress as it on the point of starting for some fete By her side were her uncle and cousin also in holiday costume and especially the cousin who had evidently 'got himself up for some very important occasion The merchant paid the thousand Philips As soon as Murillo had received the money and put it away carefully in a portfolio he opened a side door of his atelier and from an adjoining chamber entered a priest aud two witnesses The merchant thought he must be dreaming said Murillo at length you were bargaining with me about the portrait of this young girl you were bargaining with her relations for the yonng girl herself whom you had already sold to a pirate to be carried into slavery You need not deny it your protesiutions would be in vain for I heard all that wus going on from the cousin The ancle thought at lost that lie had bettor accept my offer than yours and as tho yonng people were already betrothed to one another I thought it Would be a good idea to marry them and make you pay the dower You know what I am going to do with the thousand The uncle would not hear of the match being arranged for a hundred and wanted six If you had signed the agreement for six hundred when I proposed it at first you might still have gained the duy bnt Providence was on one side and made you blind You went to the uncle and finding as you thought that he had received some higher bid for the poor child who was sacrificed through you to a pirate and through this pirate to a Turkish Pasha you increased your offer to the avaricious guardian who is standing there so coolly at the present moment but who has now given ns his word beyond the possibility of getting a larger sum than he had originally expected from you ho explained to me that it would not answer his purpose to behave like an honest man unless I in my turn increased my offer This through your liberality I was enabled to and at last without tolling you of his intention he resolved to reject your proposition and to accept mine Here is the priest here are the witnesses imagine if you can that you represent the friend and all will be complete I have deprived you of the model hut you still have the portrait Hend it to the if you think he would like The murriuge was celebrated without further deluy hut not in the presence of the merchant who myrtiiied and mortified os he was lost no time in effecting his escape The duy afterward the proprietor of the picture sold it for half itH original price If he had lived in the present century he could have gained a hundred per cent by the speculation supposing that he hnd paid fur the picture in proportion to the artistic talent it displayed with reference to the greatness of soul evinced hy the painter which renders Jfiirillo's Fruit Girl almost uivuluuhle How tr is Don Tho first object in Ufa with tho That the defendants are the owners of the other portions of the island which embraces upwards of 36000 acres and that defendants derived title from the State of California said Un I having passed to the whole island by presenting a petition to the Bupervi-sors to the effect that they desired to form a reclamation district and they caused themselves to be appointed a Board of Trustees -for such district They also undertook to appoint Commissioners to view and assess the land Naglee then the owner of plaintiffs interest made an agreement with the trustees that he would construct a levee around his land at his own expense and that they should construct an equally good levee around their lands Naglee built a levee in accordance with the agreement of sufficient bight and strength to protect his land from the highest floods Notwithstanding this the trustees assessed all the lands including that owned by Naglee and proceeded to construct a levee according to their own notions There
