Sheriff Bowling is not at all apprehensive of his interview with Judge Foster, Saturday. FIRE ALA.UM TEST. The Striking System Works Like a Charm A Quick Run. A practical test of the Kansas City Fire and Burglar Alarm company's strik ing system was made yesterday afternoon from a box located at Fifth and Minnesota avenue.

The alarm was turned in at 3 o'clock, and the department made the run from headquarters in remarkably quick time, being 1 :04 for hose reel and 1:12 for hook and ladder. Upon the suggestion of Councilman Sullivan, who thought perhaps tne boys were expect ins an alarm ana were prepared tor it, a second alarm was turned in. This was unexpected, but th horses were hitched and hose reel and hook and ladder truck made the run to the fire in 59 seconds for the former and 64 seconds for the latter. The svstem works splendidly. It is the same system that has been so long in use in New York, Indianapolis and other leading cities, excepting that some important improvements have been added.

The company will make a proposition to furnish boxes for the city. It is under stood that it will put in 50 boxes, string the svstem and maintain the system for $35 per box for a year, the second 50 boxes to be $30 per year and the third 50 boxes $25. Fifty boxes would give the city a very fair system, in addition to the various kinds of private alarm boxes now in use. THE ELEVATOR COMPLETED. The Bis Santa Fe Elevator Now Ready for Operation.

At last night's meeting of the city council an important measure was introduced by Councilman Norton in the shape of an ordinance extending the limits of the city of Kansas City and describing and defining the boundaries of the same. The ordinance, beside extending the city limits so as to include all of the Union Pacific Railway company's lands, defines the boundaries of the city as fixed by the courts, afier passing upon a number of appeals taken by owners of unplatted property. At this time it is a matter of necessity that the' boundaries be properly defined by ordinance. When the council extended the limits of the city at the last meeting in 1887, and Judge Miller confirmed the extension at the March term of court in 1888 with slight modifications, the Union Pacific company was not ready to have its immense lands, shops and terminals taken into the city. The principal objection was that the company would necessarily become liable for its share of the cost of improving certain streets abutting upon its property.

The company carried its suit to the United States circuit court and finally got a decision from the court holding that the lands, being unplatted and not being bounded on three sides by platted property, were not legally taken in as city property. This left all the Union Pacific prop erty, worth from $1,500,000 to outside the city, excepting a nine acre tract on the hill at Armstrong. It is also a fact that while the two approaches of the great 1,700 foot viaduct, that spans the railway yards at Seventh street are in the city, yet the main structure itself is not. It is now understood that the company would be willing to have the property taken in and be given police and fire protection, beside agreeing to have Fif tn street south of Central avenue improved by grading and paving at some future time. At present it is out of the question to talk about improving Fifth street, until terms can be made with the Union Pacific.

Vote for C. P. Horstman for Commissioner for the Third District. IN THE DISTRICT COURT. What lias Been Transacted in the Last Twenty-four Hours.

In the district court the case of Michael Reardon against the Rock Island Railway company was being tried. Reardon sues the company for $10,000 damages. He was driving across the company's tracks at Muncie when he was run into by an engine and seriously injured. In the case of Hogarty against D. R.

Emmons the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff awarding him $1,286, the amount asked for. The jury in the case of Alice Gallagher against the Union Pacific railway company had not returned a verdict up to 10 o'clock to-day. Last evening James Snedden begun suit against the Board of Education to recover $1,803.10 for labor and material furnished in painting, papering and kal scmining school buildings. A. F.

Par- shall brought suit against the Board of xuaucauon to recover xor laDor and material furnished in repairing black boards in several school buildings. Patrick Carr filed snit against the Kan sas Dessicating and Refining company to recover $5,000. The plaintiff alleges that owing to the negligence of the com pany in allowing an elevator to remain in an unsafe and dangerous condition, it fell beneath the weight of a load that he placed on it. His right hand was caught in the rigging and was so badly lacerated as to necessitate amputation. Carr is a poor laboring man.

Sheriff Bowling has been ordered by Judge Foster of the United States court to appear before him Saturday and give reason why he should not be fined for contempt The case is a ludicrous one. Some time ago Joseph C.

Kent was ap pointed receiver for the Industrial Iron works by Judge Miller. Attor ney Wohlman appearing for C. A. Burton made a motion to remove the case to the Federal courtJ This motion was overruled by Judge Miller. Alden, Hebrew Watson obtained an order from he court authorizing the attachment of the company's property, for labor and the attachments were served by Sheriff Bowling.

It is supposed that Burton's attorney appeared before Judge Foster and secured an order requiring the appearance of Sheriff Bowling before him to show cause why he should not be fined for contempt of his court in' attaching jl, commercial Investment Company for tl3 election of a board of directors for the cnet'r-year and such other business as may come be: them, will be held at the omce of the copa" Riverview, Kansas City, Kansas, on 'i November lltb, 1230, between t-e Lzv.r- (Tr and 8 p.m. J.
