Friday, July 9, J965 -f Space Is Needed of widespread interest in school district created in part by the April trustee election, -more people than ever before have been attending board than 50 persons can be seated in the board room, and lately there have been standing- rpopironly crowds. There is an indication the interest-will continue. 'Trustee meetings are held in the school adminis- tr bulidm on Market Street. This building, which is several years old, has long since become inadequate as the headquarters of an operation as large as the school district. Like the present Baytown City Hall, there is no room left in the school administration building for the expanded facilities necessary to operate the expanded activities of a growing district, There is a ressin to do something about Money- to expand the administration building was rejected by the voters in a bond election two years ago.

All other items on the ballot were approved, which is fine, but the need for expanding the administration building was acute at that time and grows more acute with each passing day. In addition to providing adequate work space for school district employes who work in the administration building and for facilities to do the necessary work in operating there is need for space to accommodate patrons who want to attend board meetings. Too few Americans have enough interest in what goes on at meetings of officials on all levels of government to attend meetings. There is a notable lack 9 ere council and school board meetings -in most cities; would require a bond issue to expand the administration building. School trustees are now in the early stages of preparing a bond issue to expand Lee College facilities to accommodate vocational- technical training centers.

This, might be a good time to take a took at the administration building problem. Money could be asked in the college issue to solve it. patrons have visited the school administration building since the last bond issue to provide impetus for a reappraisal of the space and seating problem. We believe the patrons of this district want adequate housing for the nerve center of a function as important as school administration. We also believe want a comfortable place to sit when they attend meetings of the people they have elected to school system.

By DREW PEARSON' WASHINGTON Luci Raines Johnson first became interested in the Catholic Church through her friend Beth Jenkins, daughter of Walter Jenkins, onetime assistant to President Johnson. Beth has been a student at Marquette University, and It was she who helped Luci arrange her incognito trip to Milwaukee when the President sopke in Chicago last month. Beth is about four years older than Luci, and the two girls long have been close friends. At one time President Johnson expected both of his daughters to.become Catholics, and so told Pat Brown of California, himself a Catholic convert.

This was because Lynda Bird, the eldest daughter, had been dating a Catholic boy for some time. The President and Mrs. Johnson have not tried to influence their daughters' religious views, but they have discreetly advised against early marriage. That both Lynda and Luci have been squired by Catholic boys on so many occasions probably results from the fact that most of the military aides at the White House are Catholics. This is not by deliberate design, but rather because White House social duty is a volunteer matter, in addition to normal military duty.

The young officers who serve at the White House must put in a full day with the Army, Navy, or Air Force, then work in the evening at the White House on top of this. Apparently not many Protestant or Jewish officers have applied for this extra duty as have Catholic officers. It has been discreetly suggested to the Pentagon that there might be more of a religious mixture, with a few Protestant and Jewish officers sent to the White House for social duty. NOTE: The job of a military aide at the White House is to conduct distinguished guests up to the receiving line during official dinners and receptions and to make sure that everything goes right. To those who knew Georgetown University in the past, this is just as revolutionary as Bolshevik 1917 revolution. It illustrates the change in the Catholic Church and the innovations wrought by Pope John, During the 1920-20's the forefront of anti Russian opposition the nation's capital was the famous Jesuit institution, Georgetown University. Its Foieisu Service School was dominated by Reverend Edmund Walsh, who spoke repeatedly effectively against any relations with Russia. He not only opposed Roosevelt's recognition of the Soviet Union in but once made a speech at ilic Air Force War College at Maxwell Field, advocating preventive war against the Soviet Union, History has now revealed that the original inspiration for the late Joe McCarthy's anti Com- -munist binge, whirh changed the course of U.S. foreign policy, came from Georgetown University.

Some of the Jesuit fathers sold McCarthy on the idea' thai there were "207 card currying Communists in the State Department," and he mudo a Senate speech to that effort; and then was faced with the task of proving his charges which he failed to do. After the McCarthy investigation was over and after the Eisenhower administration had appointed one of McCarthy's aides, Scott McLeod. in charge State Department personnel, McLeod came up with the official statement that not one communist had been discovered in the Stale Department. Father Walsh also gave an anti- profound effect upon State Department personnel through, his Foreign Service School, one of his close friends being Robx-rt Kelley, in charge of State Department Russian relations. By training young diplomats at his Foreign Service School, Father Walfhalso gave an anti- Russian slant to -American foreign policy for many years.

It took Pope John and 10 some extent the first Catholic President of the United States, with his coexistence speech at Amerj- can University in June to change this. This summer Georgetown has helped 27 Russian schoolteachers spend ten weeks in Washington studying English teaching methods. They are living at the same institution where Luci, the church's latest convert, will study nursing, and they are getting the benefit Georgetown teachers and being entertained in friendly fashion by the faculty and neighbors. In'Moscow the leaders of the Kremlin this year boycotted the American Embassy's 4th of July reception. But in Washington the twenty seven Soviet teachers came out to the Pearson farm in adjacent Maryland to relax on Independence Day, where they spoke pleasantly of their Catholic hosts and of their relations svith the American people.

Subsequently Mrs. P. was describing this holiday interlude to Father Joseph F. Thoming of Mount St. Mary Seminary and to a Washington broker.

"I don't think that's much of a story," remarked the broker. "I rather think it is," remarked Father Thorning. It having been a rainy day, it was suggested the headline might be: "Georgetown University is awash with Communists." Know Your Bridge By B. JAY DECKER 1.
