THE SUN C-T Saturday, May 13, 1967 3 Banks, Phillips Power Cubs Past Dodgers vs. v-n i M7 second inning with his home run into the left field center field stands. Dodger starter Claude Osteen, going for his fifth straight win, allowed only five hits in the seven innings he worked, three of them in the second. It was his second loss of the season. The Dodgers tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Jim Lefebvre led off with a double, advanced on an infield out and scored on Bob Bailey's sacrifice fly.

Simmons scattered eight hits and did not walk a man in his complete game victory to make his record 2-2. C. Martin's run-producing double in the fifth inning combined with the five-hit pitching of Joel Horlen and Bob Locker carried the Chicago White Sox to their seventh consecutive victory last night, a 1-0 verdict over the California Angels. The White Sox, who have won nine of their last 10 games, managed only three hits off California's Jack Sanford and Bill Kelso, but two of them came in the fifth and led to the run. With one out in the fifth, Tom McCraw singled and was forced at second by Ken Berry. But Berry made it safely to second when shortstop Jim Fregosi threw wildly past first in an attempt to get a double play.

Martin, who had two of the White Sox hits, then doubled into right center to score Berry. Vols Look Tough in Dixie Football ATLANTA (UPI) Hie Tennessee Vols, now approaching their fourth season under the direction of youthful Doug Dickey, have all the earmarks of being the top college football team in the south in 1967. Without overlooking Alabama and Georgia, ranked No. 3 and No. 4 respectively in the nation at the close of last season, the Vols must be rated strong contenders for the Southeastern Conference championship.

Their backfield certainly appears to be the best in Dixie. Quarterback Dewey Major League Scoreboard A Fighter Who James Ellis, a boyhood buddy of Cassius Clay, works, out for expected shot at heavyweight Giants took a 6-1 lead. Earlier Tom Haller belted his first home run of the season to give San Francisco a 1-0-fourth-inning edge. Sliding for Chisox is Ron Hansen, forced out at second. Straight Horlen, who has won four games without a defeat, struck out six and walked two before being replaced by Locker with one out in the ninth. Don Mincher who pounded three doubles off Horlen, reached him for a two-bagger after one out in the ninth and Locker got the final two outs. The victory kept the White Sox one-half game behind the league leading Detroit Tigers. before beating Syracuse in the Gator Bowl.

The Vols lost by three points to 8th-ranked Georgia Tech in a defensive duel, lost by one point to Alabama by missing a last-moment field goal, and lost by seven points to Ole Miss. Alabama, naturally, is Tennessee's biggest threat for the SEC title. Georgia, which doesn't play either the Crimson Tide or the Vols, could come out on top by default. Alabama's chances for another perfect season (the Tide's had three in the past six years) depends upon three key factors: whether Bear Bryant will reinstate suspended quarterback Ken Stabler; whether Bryant can find replacements for his key line losses; and whether Alabama can beat Tennessee. Georgia has two key games this coming season a visit to Ole Miss and the annual Jacksonville, Fla.

clash with Florida. The Bulldogs beat both last season and although they have some offensive line problems shape up as a winner again. The Georgia backfield should be almost on a par with Tennessee's. Fullback Ron Jenkins and quarterback Kirby Moore were second and fifth respectively in SEC rushing last fall, yet tailback Kent Lawrence, a 9.4 sprinter, is regarded as the Bulldogs' biggest threat. Tackle Bill Stanfill could be the South's best defensive lineman.

The victory was the third in a row for O'Dell. Jarvis suffered his first defeat in four decisions. Stockton Makes Cut With 145, Gillespie Out NEW ORLEANS (UPI) Dave Stockton of San Bernardino fired a one-under-par 71 yesterday to give him a 145 at the halfway mark of the $100,000 Greater New Orleans Open golf tournament. The 145 qualified him for the final 36 holes of the tournament. Tomorrow's final round will be televised at 2 p.m., PDT, on KHJ-TV (Channel 9).

Ron Gillespie, also of San Bernardino and Arrowhead Country Club, missed the cut by one stroke with a 147. He also had a 71 yesterday, but his 76 Thursday was too much to overcome. Stockton had only one bogey yesterday and that was on the first hole when he three putted from about 20 feet out. He was driving well, just missing two holes-in-one. On the 13th hole he actually hit the flag, and on the 17th his ball rolled right past the cup.

"Putting is what has been hurting me," Stockton said. "I played a lot better today." He said the temperatures, way up in the 80s, bothered most of the players. "But I felt better when I made those two birdies," he added. NATIONAL LEAGUE Won Lost Pet. .679 .609 .600 .565 .531 .500 .440 .375 .375 GB Cincinnati 19 Pittsburgh 14 St.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Juan Mari-chal won his fifth consecutive game and Willie Mays clouted a three-run home run last night as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Houston Astros 6-1.

Marichal, who lost his first three 1967 decisions, allowed seven hits and struck out nine Astros in raising his record to 5-3. Mays' home run, his third of the season and the 545th of his career, came in a four-run seventh-inning rally as the Meredith Lauds Fighting Men DALLAS, Tex. Mincher Voted lops tor April LOS ANGELES (UPI) Don Minch er, who came to the California Angels as part of the deal that sent Dean Chance to the Minnesota Twins, has been selected Southern California Athlete of the month for April by the Helms Athletic Foundation. The big first baseman proved to be the Angels' leading home run hitter during the first month of the season with five and led the club in runs batted in with 11 while hitting at a .311 clip.

Mincher, Jimmie Hall and pitcher Pete Cimino were traded by the Twins to the Angels for Chance, who has won five games for Minnesota and leads the majors in victories. PITTSBURGH (UPI) Matty Alou and Roberto Clemente each homered and scored two runs last night and Billy O'Dell and Elroy Face combined to pitch a five hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates whipped the Atlanta Braves 5-2. Alou, who had four hits, slammed his first home run of the year down the right field line just inside the foul pole some 300 feet from the plate in the third inning. One out later, Clemente rocked loser Pat Jarvis for a 400-foot blast over the left center wall. Jarvis was kayoed when Alou and Clemente singled in the seventh inning.

Ramon Hernandez replaced Jarvis and surrendered a run scoring single to pinch-hitter Manny Mota. Clemente also scored when left fielder Rico Carty fired wildly past third base for an error. Clay Carroll relieved Hernandes and Bill Mazeroski singled for the third run of the inning. Qn the Airianes TODAY 11 Sandy Koufax Show, KNBC (4); 11:15 Angels vs. White Sox, KPRO KMPC.
