How I would have 1 rl' lia'iV'-K Ocean Salmon Season Opens On Successful Note, Optimism High Last weekend salmon anglers were patted on the head by Lady Luck, and the pat tingled of a promise of more and better things to come. The opening session of the ocean salmon season produced quite a few fish, although they weren't particularly tackle-busters, averaging from five to seven pounds, the quantity was promising. Skippers for the Stagnaro boats reported many "shakers," salmon under the legal size 6f 22 inches, were hooked and released, but they still managed to net 47 keepers over the two-day period.

That's a right respectable total for the first trips of the season, as they weren't sure where the fish would be schooled. As to the location of the schools, most of the action was in the area between Capitola and the cement ship. This is good news to those who like their salmon action from a small skiff or outboard, as it is an easy run from either the municipal wharf or the Capitola pier. The boats worked in an area up to about five miles offshore. In case you are a newcomer to our bay fishing, the promise mentioned above comes from the theory if there are fish in the bay now when the spawning season is still several months away, they will probably remain there through the summer months.

Sonic 250 fans, best junior college crowd of the a oar, watched the tense civic auditorium game. The Seahawks spotted San Jose a 37-28 lead in the last six minutes of the first half, then fearlessly roared right back to tie the score at 59-59 with 6:45 remaining. John Mntiasevich's jump shot tied the score. Then lymond 5 mta Cm: Srntmrl I Plans Revealed Sentinel Orlando, Fla.

With three minutes to go Eddie Sims hit a jump shot to give San Jose a four-point lead. Forty-five seconds later, with 2:15 remaining, San Jose got the ball and stalled until Ron Worrell fouled Williams with 55 seconds to play. That was the play, but Worrell's foul was probably a little too late.

From here on out, San Jose took advantage of the one-and-one rule and built up the margin of difference. The Jags had a terrific height advantage, at least two or three inches per man. Yet the hustling Hawks out-rebounded San Jose, 30-29. The Jags had a 16-8 rebounding edge at the intermission, so one can see what kind of a job Cabrillo did during the final 20 minutes. Sims, who enrolled at San Jose at midterm after a tour with the navy, gathered in 12 rebounds.

Matiasevich, who was terrific on the defensive boards in the second half, pulled down nine while Stan Olive had eight. Cabrillo's Tom Idemoto, who stands only 5-7 and is 10 and 11 inches shorter than two or three San Jose men, hauled in five rebounds. Olive scored 23 points for top honors during the game and he played one of his best contests. It took terrific courage to make that kind of a comeback after getting discouraged a week ago and walking off the floor. When San Jose pulled ahead just before the half, the Cabrillo players got a little anxious and attempted some poor shots, which they did not do after the intermission.

The Jags were guilty of numerous bad passes, especially in the early moments. Cabrillo's last lead was 21-20, after Curt Sandman scored with 6:20 to go in the first half. Cabrillo has three games to play, Foothill, here, Saturday, at Vallejo, Tuesday, and Hart-nell, here, a week from Saturday. San Jose's win was the Jags' tenth in Coast conference play with one loss. It was Cabrillo's tenth loss with one win.

The Jags need only one more win to clinch a tie for the title. vin Dark, SF Giants1 im Boss, Has Own Ideas Baseball Veterans Eager To Catchers In Spring Training salmon is remarkable, so possibly many of the smaller fish will reach keeper size. The recent news that a small bore target range ould finally be established in the park was welcome tidings to Santa Cruz sportsmen. The many people who made this possible are to be congratulated. A small bore range is a vital piece of the program for firearms education, plus a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

Santa Cruz has long needed a range open to the public, and under the club sponsorship, which will probably be affiliated with the National Rifle association, it should be a well-run affair. Contrary to the thoughts of some people on the subject, firearms are not an evil that should be done away with, but a source of enjoyment, relaxation, protection and sport, when they are properly used. On this new range people will be able to learn the proper use of firearms under proper supervision. The new range will have a more than sufficient backstop for the bullets in the form of a large cliff, the noise factor has been considered in placing the range in an out-of-the-way spot, and it is a small bore range, meaning the deer rifles of heavy caliber will not be used there. For Warmer Clamming, Abalone Picking I tried out a new outfit the other day that I think will be a great hit locally, especially with the clammers and abalone hunters.

It was a dry skin diving suit made by Perfect World Products called Totes, that you can wear over your clothes. I spent considerable time in the ocean wearing the outfit and didn't feel cold at all. And believe me, the water is cold. The only exposed parts of my body were hands and face, which did get kind of cold, but the rest of my body was quite comfortable. And my clothes remained completely dry.

With a pair of tennis shoes over the stocking feet to protect the gum rubber outfit from abrasions, this outfit would be the cat's whiskers for abalone gathering or clamming. It is colored safety yellow (an excellent feature), very well made, comfortable to wear and carries a good guarantee. The shirt and pants sell for $19.95 plus tax. A hood is available for another $3.50, which will give you a complete skin diving suit. A further use for the pants of the outfit would be as waders for fishing.

They fit tight enough to eliminate the pocket that would fill up with water if you ever slipped, and are flexible and comfortable to wear" There are many other potential uses one could find, but these are the ones I bought my outfit for. The Seahawks got the ball but couldn't go ahead and Walt Dixon tied it again on a sleeper fast break.

But Olive drove for a lay-up and the score went to 63-63, with 4:15 left. Here's where the turning point came. Cabrillo got the ball and one of the guards broke loose from his man away from the ball. Sawyer's end came when Machen tagged him with a straight right. Referee Pete Morelli never bothered counting. It was Sawyer's third trip to the canvaas. In the fourth, Machen knocked his man groggy, only to have the bell interfere at the count of three.
