THE PBOG-RESSI1TE FEBRII ART 25; WO i AS TO JOINING THE ALLIANCE 1 'if VI II' Editor Rural Wobld: Some of noiVh'hnrn have recently united in forming themselves into Alliance and. of" them hav9 MkifS me about joining, with and becoming A one of them. am indisposed to aa so for tne simple reason uiai i caa no good in my doing so.v My fanrrof a little over 200 acres, with the stock I have on it, occupies all of my time. I make a good living off it and am ahead even on la3t year's business $300. Now what I want you to tell me is, what good is there in my going into this secret organization? They cn't teach me how to farm for I know that better than they can tell me.

This is not a matter of egotism on my part, but of absolute fact as is proven by a comparison of farms and of the sue- ol cess with which mine is handled as with any member of that body in this county. I don't wish however to be singular, have heard all they had to urge, and do not see it in Htnat light Perhaps you can throw some light on the question not 'f oped by them. Please try and oblige your friend, John Mcijkbmott. Remarks: With the utmost Mr. 1 and with bur usual frankness.

You are the very'4' first man that ought to hove responded to the call of the lecturer and the 'organizer. As the Rural World these A organizations, be their name what they 1 may, their nature and object is mutual 1 i 1 vr oenent, ana one cannot conxer a fit unless he has it to give, nor will he V. do so unless to one who needs it. If then you are a better farmer than I they, it is because you know more and therefore have knowledge to give; and if you will only put yourself to a little trouble and so lay out your plans, you 'V', can convey that information, which 'I has cost you so much to obtain, in lit-' tie doses, and very gradually fill their minds with it so that they may be i' come better farmers and more success-: We will not say it is your duty .1 to do it because we realize it is that and infinitely more, for there is no pleasure half so pleasurable as in giv- ing that which is needed to the needy. The Alliance and the Wheel, the Grange and the Farmers' Mutual Benefit Association are all formed for this very purpose and as such deserve the support of every farmer, and every farmer ought for this very reason to associate himself with one or more of 1 them.

Very little is being done by either of these organizations to teach men how to farm better; the lecturer too often dwells upon subjects illus-trative of other benefits hoped for and expected, such as the reduction of the taxes, the buying of goods, necessaries i of h-e, at lower than store prices, the reform of the tariff, the free coinage "frof. silver, the cheapening of money, free banking, and these are all good. But you can unite with the Alliance just formed in your township i i tv: at i I ij-, anu tun Lueui suluc tuiugs tue leuiiirer knows nothing about and thus become i a power for goxl in that" little band for which they and their children will 1 ever bless you. Ni Moreover, it must be evident to you that the farmers of America have not if gone into this associated effort so uni-i versally, until they were absolutely compelled to do so for mutual protec-, tion. All men nowadays are combined.

I' "You cannot name a profession or a busines3, from the clergymen on the one hanJ, and the bankers on the other, all the way down the list until Ah you get lower than the bootblicks. and reach the tramp. All have their TO BUSINESS AGENTS. Raleigh, 0., Feb. 25, 1890.

As-' sociated effort is the universal practice the day and it has become absolute- ly necessary for the farmers to follow 1 suit and join in the procession. I What good will it do you? Well, you will act in harmony with them. It will bring you closer to your neighbors' hearts and hearths and make you more neighborly, thus giving even you, sturdy Scotsman as you are, something more to live for and enjoy; and it will teach you a great deal which you can make available on even your successful farm, for out of every man's failure you will learn a lesson and be able to teach others therefrom. We do therefore most earnestly entreat you to unite with your neighbors, join hands with them, help them by you counsels and your presence, and our word for it you will very soon find one of the best -friends you ever met ana tne most practical means of bene5ting your fellow farmers ever suggested.
