Bryan is beginning to think that Cleveland is a perniciously active partisan. A Kansas City woman had her husband arrested because he objected tc her painting face. Thia persona! liberty business is overdone. Judging from the number of murderf in Ottawa we conclude that Ottawa need9 two Chautauquas. Sensational matter must be mighty scarce when it is given cut that a plague is rampant iB western Kansas, Of cours? it is a silly lie but such things hurt.

A murder trial in Ottawa found the defendant guilty of "consobrinicide." We can imagine the relief of the jurj when the verdict was finally read and no longer on its hands. The work the Santa Fe is doing in making a park near its dopot in this city is good, very good. For years that has been an eye sore. Now it is going to be more beautiful. The usual fight will doubtless be made on the prison twine but it is noticeable that it goes on the market at a lower price than the trust charges.

The twine plant will yet bring the trust to time. The Topeka Herald is trying to induce its readers to put on their old Panama hats. It must be that some dealer was overstocked last summer and is thus advertising to unload. The Panama hats the fellows wore last year were frauds pure and sample. They never looked the price and never wore the expected time.

The young man who drinks liquor is crippling himself in the race of life. With competition so keen and the race of life so strong a man needa his best faculties to cope with the affairs of life. The man who cooks his brain has crippled it, has impaired his ability to do hH best. The man who drinks hquor in any form is committing a crime against himself, is putting an impediment in his progress. In telling of the appointments of the new mayor of Topeka it is stated that several former officials have been reappointed.

It is always so. Whenever a man gets a public job it gives him a lama mai lingers in nis mourn lorever after and he never hears of a job being open without secretly wishing that lightning would strike him. A college of socialism has been found ed in Wichita. This can do neither barm nor good. Socialism is one of those things that is mighty fine theory but poor in practice.

Practically everybody believes in socialism to limited degree but even the most earnest advocates of the doctrine fail to practice it. Until selfishness can be eliminated socialism must be a fad; The Apostle Paul complaired of "the thorn in the flesh" and theologians have never clearly decided just what it was Nearly every church organization today has "the thorn the flesh" in the way of some exasperating member. Some times the proper authorities grapple with the thorn and pluck it out root and branch, giving the wound a chance to heBl, but the geueral way is to go on suffering. Tne thorn never drops ou of its own accord. Grover Cleveland says the great need of the blaotc man is education.

In i measure this is true but not entirely The greatest need of the colored man is industrial training A race of educated people is good but not as good as a race of capable people. 1 his is true of all colors and conditions. The hope of any race is not entirely in education but it is in industrial training. It it easy to have too many lawyers, too many professional men or all but it is hard to have too many skilled workmen. A noted democrat criticises the presi dent by declaring that he is fostering a war spirit.

Nothing of the kind. The president is making America sa proud of itself and so confident of its own resources that other nations are showing a wholesome respect for us. Just as a big army and navy operates for peace, so does a speakingly patriotic country insure respect and good treatment. The days of our "splendid isolation," of which we used to boast, are over and henceforth we must take our place in the world affairs and be right at the of the head the table. Next year a president is to etect and it is a mighty good time for Kansas republicans to stand together.

Our delegation in congress is a good one and it should be kept intact. A fight any where will hurt. It is unfortunate that there was so much fuss made about the last legislature. That kindofacani- nign cannot help hurting. The only sensible thing to do in view of what has already been done is to adjust our petty differences and unite to renominate and reelect every creditable official serving whether he belongs to one faction or another.

The Topeka papers are thrown ir.to another spasm because of the report that Leland said that Leedy had more backbone than other governor KaDsas ever had with the possible exception of Anthony. We do not know not know whether or not LelancTmade the statement but it is true none the less. Leedy had more backbone than anything else, in fact he was mostly backbone and bad temper. Kansas for some reason has had a weaK lot of gover norsand a man like Leedy was refrefhing, Leedy was not such a bad governor any way he was taken. i ant Column.

The greatest danger from colds and grip is their resulting in pneumonia. If reasonable care is used, however, and Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is taken all danger will be avoided. Among the tens of thousands who Lave used this remedy for those diseases we have yet to learn of a single case having resulted in pneumonia, which shows conclusively mat it is a certain preventive of that dangerous disease. It will cure a cold or an attack of grip in less time than any other treatment. It is pleasant and safe to take.

Perry, editor of the Enterprise, bhortsville, N. Y. "This is the honest truth.

1 at times kept from coughing myself to pieces by taking a teaspoonful of this remedy, pnd when the coughing spell would come on. at night I would take a dose and it seemed that in the briefest interval the cough would pass off and I would go to sleep perfectly froe from cough and its accompanying pains To say that the remedy acted as a most agreeable surprise is putting it very mildly. I had no idea that it would or could knock out the grip, simply because I had never tried it for such pur pose, but it did, and it seemed with the second attack of coughing the remedy caused it to not only be of less duration, but the pains were far less severe, and I had not used the contents of one bottle before Mr Grip had bid me adieu.
