Thus, two satellites will soon be available to high school science students instead of only OSCAR-7.

And OSCAR-8 will be easier to track because it will pass overhead at about 9:30 a.m. local time every day. Also, OSCAR-8 will use the 29.5 MHZ frequency covered by typical general- coverage receivers (available to nearly everyone) on schooldays and switch to 435 MHZ only on weekends because not many high school students have access to 435 MHZ receivers. If the Soviet Union gets the bugs out of their RS-Satellite and launch it as planned sometime this year, three satellites (or more) will be available for use in high school science classes in 1978. So far, the most popular tranceiver to use is the KLM- 2700, available for demonstration at the K.U.

Western Regents Center. Ulysses' Kepley J.H.S. scheduled a demonstration on January 9. Although also transmitting voice and morse code messages, OSCAR-8 has simplified its telemetry signal to just 6 three-digit numbers in Morse code so that students can easily examine how well the satellite is functioning. Like OSCAR-7, it will send educational bulletins to high schools on morning passes.

Thanks to many dedicated volunteers, including solderer Marie Marr, OSCAR-8 will soon be up. means listen on 29.5 MHZ for 15 minutes. means listen on 145.95 MHZ for 15 minutes. means satellite will pass almost directly overhead. means expect an educational bulletin to high schools.

means low power in use (expect weak signals). means experiments in progress (expect strange signals). Strongest signals occur about 13 minutes after time listed (CST). Sometimes, to save' batteries, OSCAR will unexpectedly change from mode A to mode or vice versa. February Schedule: OSCAR VII Science Teacher Satellite Feb.
