Ill Miss Harris Has Cello, Does Travel a girl likes to travel and wants a job with a lot nf fun in it, she should take up the cello and play it in a band," advises cellist Charlotte Harris of ABC-TV's The Lawrence Welk Show. Charlotte and pianist Jo Ann Castle represent the only distaff instrumentalists in.

the entire Welk troupe. She says her fellow musicians are "chivalrous gentlemen, even while we're traveling on tour," when the men of the Welk band might be a little weary themselves. "They help with the luggage, open doors and carry my cello," Charlotte reports. "Many girls find themselves specializing in a field in which they wind up meeting only people in their own kind of work. A Lawrence Welk cellist works with other musicians, of course, but we're always meeting fine foJks from all seclions of tho country in all kinds of work." Charlotte chose her career carefully.

As a student Northwestern University, she studied both piano and cello but gave up the piano because cellists wen' more in demand. But she didn't know when she made the switch lo the cello that there would come a day when she wouldn't even have to carry it. Young Siugei' Had Early Start On TV New York (UPI)--Ordinarily, the debut of a young singer in a supper club arouses about as much interest in town as a crowded subway during rush hour. Young, unheralded singers are commonplace in New York, and iheir initial appearances in local bistros are greeted with indifference. But every rule has its happy exception, and it was just such in exception that prevailed during Ihe recent debut of Bcr- nadeltc Castro, a pretty, 1ft- jenr-oid lass who sparkles with the exuberance and innocence of youth.

Bcrnadetle's performances at The Living Room, far from going unnoticed, were witnessed by some of the biggest names in (own. But then Miss Castro is a ralher special case: her name just happens to be a household word in (he metropolitan area. Bernadellc'j father is i ture magnate Bernard Casfro. and his convertible sofas are big stuff in the New York area and Bernadetle began performing before audiences when she was four years old--co-starring wilh sofas in television commercials. PROFILES 'IN SCIENCE RUDOLF DIESEL Today's close relationship between science and industry, and between professors and businessmen, is often thought to be a modern development.

However, there have been so many examples of professors who developed theories and ideas that they were able to exploit commercially. By Patrick and Getze The connection between classroom, laboratory and factory has never been so close as it is today. The system was first fully developed in Germany. Among prc-World War II examples of scienlisls-lurned- indtistrialtsts were Karl von Linde and 'Rudolf Diesel. Von Undo was a famous professor and a pioneer in mechanical He was one of the world's greatest authorities on the dynamics of heat.

Diesel (1858-1913) was one of von l.indc's students. He was. (lie best of von Linde's slitdonls and was graduated with highest honors. During von Linde's lectures young Diesel was to impressed that he decided to make his lite work improvement of engines that produced power and energy. Von Linde said that the engines of the time were grossly inefficient when compared with the energy that is theoretically possible to produce.

When Diesel was through school he'went to work for the Linde Ice Machine Co. as an engineer. He later became a manager, but did not allow his administrative duties lo take his mm! off scientific and engineering problems. One day while watching ammonia compressors in an ice plant he was impressed by the amount of heat that was given off by the process of compression. The result was his development of the dicsel motor.

His idea was to compress air to a IGth of its volume, which woukl raise the air's temperature to about 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Jle would then inject fuel into the compressed air chamber, and the tremendous temperature would automatically ignite the fuel without a spark. There would thus be no igm'lion syslcm, and high compression would help achieve some of the efficiency lost in ordinary Internal combustion engines. Although publication of his ideas in 1893 aroused only skepticism, -Diesel obtained Backing from the immensely Wealthy Krupp family and in 1898 created worldwide sensation by producing a dicsel engine that worked just as he said it would. Diesel became enormously rich, and his dicsel engines arc more widely used every year.

David Brian Advises Perseverance most important decision in picking a career, is that first one," asserts David Brian, movie and television actor. "This is especially true if you arc thinking about a career in show business," the handsome blonde giant emphasizes. "Once you've settled on a theatrical career, there's no turning back. You either go ahead or quit." Once Die die is cast, Brian believes, the only rond to success in j'our chosen field is perseverance. A product of New York's rugged Vinegar Hill section, Brian learned early in life that everjthing worth-while is worth working for.

From his early training as a choir boy in his neighborhood church to chorus line in Sig- mtind Jlomberg's Broadway production of "New Moon," Brian had his sighis scl upon a career in show business. Director and bon vivanl John Huston round-tripped the 10,000 miles from Ilaly lo Hollywood last month just to pick up an award at the Writers Ouild parly. Steve Allen will commute next a between his HoHywood originated TV show and his new assignment as emcee of "I've Got a Secret" in New York. Henry Morgan, panelist on "Secret," made the weekly round-trip between here and New York for six months a couple of years ago to do a local Hollywood TV clambake. Bob Hope's Trip One year Bob Hope made the longest vaudeville in history when he. flew from a show dale in Moscow to Hollywood for the Oscar awards show.

But the new contender for the crown is actor Ban-y Morse, the British-born bloke who plays Lt. and chases David Janssen in ABC-TV's "The Fugitive." Morse wound up the season's filming on "Fugitive" recently and (lew home to Toronto, Canada. But yesterday Morse flew back here to put in an appearance nn NBC Bob-Hope-TV Guide awards show. "It's not so difficult, really," says Morse. "I was in rehearsal for 'Wailing for Godot' at the CBC slndios in Toronto, and about p.m.

I dashed to the airport." Short Stay His plane Put down at about ii p.m. Hollywood time, Then he dashed to the NBC studios 20 miles away to take a bow with David Jahssen. About midnight of the same day, Morse was expected lo board another jet and return lo the Toronto studios by 8:30 this morning. The fantastic part of it is that Morse will be out more than $400 as a result of this hcgira, lo say nothing of the wear and tear.

So, why docs he bother? "1 just sensed a Quinn Martin, our producer and a friendly and amiable guy, would be pleased, ami one likes lo please boss," says Morse. Apparently no one, including Mr. Martin or TV Guide, volun. leered to even see that Morse was transported from the Los Angeles airport to the show.
