Marilyn At Work Hand-Picked Personnel At Work On 'Trouble; Still At Harratis DAVE HOLLAND. Valley Time TODAY 20 May 24, 1962 LIGHTS OF LAS VEGAS By PHIL SOLOMON Great Dane Into Sahara 1 By DAVE HOLLAND Valley Times TODAY LnierUinment Editor (Last of two articles.) LAKE TAHOE, makes an elephant look like hes got amnesia. Producer Stan Margulies was speaking of little Claire Wilcox, the cute seven-year-old who essays the title role Tony Curtis new picture, 40 Pounds of Trouble. The crew was shooting location scenes here at Har-rahs Tahoe, a plush entertainment center that has a part in the picture, too. It plays a plush entertainment center with Curtis as its manager.

"THIS little girl is amazing, Margulies said. "Shes not like most child actresses. In other words, her cuteness isnt precocious or saccharine; its real, its natural and thats hard to find. "She doesnt learn her lines by reading them. She still has trouble with that so Norman (Norman Jewison, the director) recites them to her and she picks them up immediately.

So if she blows a line, its not her fault, its because Norman gave it to her wrong! Margulies said that Tony Curtis thinks so highly of By BOB THOMAS Associate! Press Movie Writer Marilyn Monroe is back at work after singing "Happy Birthday to President Kennedy, and everyone is happy now. Last week, it was a different matter. Twentieth Century-Fox grumbled that "Somethings Got To Give was eight days behind schedule in its first three weeks because of Marilyns absence. The studio thought she should xV stay here and work. SHE DIDNT.

She left Fox by heli-X I copter Friday for Los Angeles International Airport, flew to New York and performed at the party fund-raising "2 celebration in Madison Square Garden. "I told the studio six weeks ago that I was going, she explained. "I consider it an honor to appear before the President of the United States. Besides, she said, she is a Democrat. Marilyn reported back to work on time for her Monday morning, and the studio was pleased with the progress.

The film had to shut down briefly a week ago when she was ill. THE NOTED BLONDE was in fine form when I visited her. Her spirits were still high from the Garden appearance and the Presidents remark afterwards: "I can now retire from politics. It was her first public performance since she entertained troops in Korea. "I liked it, she said.

About the rest of her form; Dandy. Fifteen pounds have melted away, leaving a trim but still curvy figure. How did she do it? "It helps to have bad gall bladder, said Marilyn, who had hers removed last June. The rest is low cholesterol; avoid animal fats. Who needs them? Eskimos, maybe.

Not us. Marilyns new figure comes in handy for "Something's Got To Give." She wears a bikini in it, even takes a swim in the nude. Shell appear in the bikini, not otherwise; movies havent gone that far yet. LAS VEGAS Milton Prells Hotel Sahara figures to draw turnaway crowds beginning Tuesday, May 29, as Victor Eorge, one of the most sought-after single performers in show business, makes his annual four.week stand. As usual, the Great Dane sustains most of the show with his brash wit and musical talent.

Leonid Hambro Joins Borge briefly for some two piano offerings. Eorge, a phenomenal attraction in this country for the last 20 years, has been called A Solo Riot in Music and sets box office records with regularity. He 1 HERES THE swimming pool scene being discussed in the two-part story concluding today on the Harrahs Tahoe location of Tony Curtis "40 Pounds of Trouble." Youll note the camera crew working in heavy coats as they again attempt to shoot the goodbye scene between Curtis and little Miss Wilcox. At this moment, the sun was out, the wind had stopped but presently well, see the plants blown over in the background? There were more to come. Claire that hes signed her to a personal seven year contract.

Marilyn commented on a variety of matters, including her birthday June 1. She admitted unabashedly that shell be 36. I like celebrating birthdays. I enjoy knowing that Im alive. And you can underline Alive.

COOL the brilliant young actress who co-stars with Curtis If it werent cold," she said, "I couldnt wear this full-length fur. And she turned to wave at the crowd of on-lookers gathered to watch the filming. WEVE got two sequences coming up at the pool where the folks have to be in swim suits, Margulies said. "I hope its warmer then or everyone WILL be blue. Oh well, this is in color.

They may look different but at least, theyll be pretty. Then the wind stopped, the sun came out again and the assistant director called, Hold the noise, boys. Were going to shoot. The action started and this time the wind did not blow but the sun disappeared again. One of the crews 'electricians stared up at the sky and swore.

"Someones messin around with our key light again," he said. "The only trouble is, we dont know which union to com plain to. We dont WHO to call about the sun. Even Harrah ain't THAT big. with through the years.

And we consider ourselves lucky to have gotten Norman Jewison as the director. We figured that if he can be colorful and imaginative on television, theres no reason why he couldnt be colorful and imaginative on a big screen. And hes proven us right. Norman realizes that this is his first feature and hes got sense enough to realize that there are some things he just does not know. And not being afflicted with false vanity, he isnt ashamed to ask the advice of someone with 30 years movie experience.

BECAUSE of the producers glowing words of praise, the young Studio City directors ears should have been red but at that moment, they were blue well, nearly blue. That chilling wind was still blowing at the swimming pool at Harrahs Ta hoe, the sun was still skip' ping back and forth behind the clouds and they were still trying to shoot that pool scene. "Im glad its cold, smiled Suzanne Pleshette, A MOST UNUSUAL AMUSEMENT PARK Ride the exciting SNOW BALL RIDE Giant Family-Size Entertainment has grossed as high as $89,000 for a week of one-mghters. A talented concert pianist, Borge can dispense with versions of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms with incisive ad lib comments and such specialty numbers as his famous "audible punctuation routine. BORGE HAS NO patience with pompous music critics who are horrified at the "Musical Liberties he takes.

He receives adoration from critics everywhere he shows. As a concert pianist, Borge started in Copenhagen at the age of 15, when he performed the Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 2 with the Slate Symphony Orchestra before a packed house. Borges humor apparently is boundless. Once he bet a skeptical Basil Rathbone he could tell time by the piano.

Seabng himself, Borge banged out the opening bars of a Sousa march. Immediately, there was a pounding on the wall, and a sleepy voice rumbled, "Stop that noise, you idiott Don't you know its 1:30 in the morning? If INCIDENTALLY, Curtis has more than a passing interest this picture. Although its being released by Universal-International, its being produced by Curtis Enterprises, the actors own company. But even though its his baby, Curtis doesnt concern himself with the company per se. As a matter of fact: "I could care less, the actor said. "Look, he said, "Im an actor, not an executive.

I framed this company for the simple reason that I wanted to own something and not just be working on salary. But I dont bother with any of the company business or with any of the production problems. Ive got top-notch people doing all that. Its their headache, not mine. "THE pictures well make will be mine, a hundred per cent, and that extra money will come handy later on.

Let's face it, one of these days, the public may not want to see me any more and do you know what I want to do then? I want to continue my painting. "Hes a very good painter, a friend said. "I do have one problem, however, Curtis grinned "1 dont think Curtis is a good painters name. I may change it back to Schwartz. Wouldnt that be something? Change it back to Schwartz and complete the cycle.

"But production problems? I'll have none of that. That leave to production people."
