Joseph A. Barry, former magazine editor and author, has been signed as Eastern story editor. Mver P.

Beck will continue as Eastern publicity By LEX BOVD Leave it to unpredictable Hollywood to always come up with a first. Yesterday it was the first movie premieie'ever staged in a submarine seven miles off Long Beach and 60 foot down. I was there along with several other non-claustrophobic members of the press. I have an honorary submariner card issued by the Navy to prove it. The occasion was the world bow of "Ron Silent, Run Deep, story of submarine warfare (natch) starring Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable.

Submarine Perch commanded by Lt. Com. E. V. McKecver came up from San Diego for the purpose.

After a thorough tour of the underwater craft which was sparked by an unscheduled fire scare a fire quickly put out-guests settled down aft to view hgu emu tt the Laurel Drive-in in the Valley. This must be Dark Gables year. Dose on the heels qf his smash comedy role in Teacher's Pet, he racks up another hit in Run Silent, reminiscent of the rugged Gable of yore. AH agreed at the showing that with a dombination like this Gable, Lancaster and the Navy-Producers Hecht, Hill and Lancaster cant miss at the box office. Its a straight simple story of ingenious sea-fighting in World War.

Two. There are no melodra-matics, no romances, no Bilbo-esque situations, no deviation from the main story line. In the story based on the novel by Com. Edward Beach, directed by Robert Wise and Lensed by Russell Harlan, Gable is seen MONTGOMERY CLIFT ELIZABETH TAYLOR EVA MARIE SAINT RAINTREE COUNTY PIUS 2ND HITI "SEVEN HILLS OF ROME seek out and destroy a Japanese Akikaze destroyer which he holds responsible for sinking his previous sub. His one-track dedication leads to charges of cowardice and ineompetency which results in what seems like a mutiny on the part of Lancaster, his tough executive officer who is resentful of Gable for taking over the command he had expected and who is in disagreement with Gable's tactics.

Since Gable has been injured there does not seem to be much conflict about this evidept "mutiny. This portion of the film relating to the legality of Lancasters takeover, is somewhat unclear. However, it becomes academic when Gable and Lancaster eventually see eye to eye and the sub covers itself with gloiy. The submarine action is particularly effective and provides the audience with a sense of participation as the men sweat out depth charges and fire from enemy destroyers and planes. The miniature photography is especially good and the scenes of ships blowing up have a realistic effect.

Although a good portion of the film takes place in the sub, the action is not static and in many instances the audience will be nervously perched on the edge of seats. 1 Jack Warden, as Gables yeoman fmd defender, provides another standout portrayal. Brad Dexter, as a malcontent officer, is appropriately obnoxious, and Don Rickies, Nick Cravat, Joe Maross, Eddie Foy IH, Rudy Bond. H. M.

Wynant and John Bryant are good as enlisted men and officers. Mary LaRoche is seen briefly as Gable's wife. Milan Idol Of Mexican Kids Lita Milan, playing opposittc Paul Newman in Warner Bros. The Left Handed Gun, became the idol of nine little Mexican children, ranging from three to seven years of age, who have roles in the picture. On their first day of work the youngsters learned Lita spoke fluent Spanish and had an abundant store of Latin childrens stories.
