J. Kennison of Placer county was held for several hours in his own jail here last night on a drunken driving charge and later was released on $250 bail, Auburn city police reported. Kennison was arrested by Constable John Shannon and a city patrolman who said they answered a telephoned complaint from a tavern. They said Kennison was getting into his car as they approached the tavern and they stopped him after he had driven for a block. He was taken to Dr.

J. A. Russell, superintendent of the Placer county hospital, who certified him as intoxicated, they said. Mrs. Moya Bemis, Auburn police judge, later issued a warrent charging Kennison with drunking driving and set bail, allowing him to be released until a hearing The damage caused by all types of rodents in the United States is estimated at $500,000,000 annually.

LIGHT PUNISHMENT FOR A KILLER This story starts in Hollywood, as many do. Only this story is true. It was a holiday, a day off for our two 'heroes'. What could be better than a trip to a racetrack a 100 and some miles away? Why not play the bangtails for awhile? So they started. "But," thought one of our heroes, "we can't drive ail that way without a little drink or two.

can So they drank "the first bottle and made a start on the second. They were arrested once for speeding. They posted bail and drove dizzily on. As they neared the track they switched drivers so the owner would be at the wheel. He felt like going faster.

He did go faster. Through the streets he roared then up over the sidewalk, across a lot, careening against posts and GENERAL CONSTRUCTION J13M1 SON SETTLES FOR DIVORCE Oakland, Nov. 10 (U.R) Gordon Kemp, Oakland real estate man who once accused his wife of attempted murder, settled for a divorce. After the arrest they told him what had happened. He had been too muzzy to realize it at the time. He had killed two girls, sisters, as his- car had lurched over the sidewalk upon which they stood. Two deaths and he did not know it. At least he said he did not know it.

The citizenry of the town was aroused. Here was one drunken killer who would pay for his sins. Everyone agreed about that with head nodding. Then they forgot. There were the law's usual delays before his trial.

Finally he was tried and convicted. The sentence was the denouement. He got a fine that wasn't too heavy and a sentence of some months out at a mountain samp. Probably nine months, they tell me, if he behaves himself. He will have to work, of course, the way other prisoners work.

They work as hard sa an octogenarian with angina pectoris. Two deaths were punished by a veritable tap on the wrist. But the offense is common and the law is lenient. I mean no contempt of court, no contempt of the judge who passed the sentence. Most judges would have given the same sentence.

Some would have given a lighter one. But I do mean a fundamental and vigorous complaint against the laws that treat these killers so leniently. Let's change those laws! In the meantime, whose child is next? (This month the Parents' Corner is starting a new answer service to readers. Shriners Initiate 103 Members Pacific avenue was a blaze of color Saturday afternoon, when more than 1000 wearers of the red fez from San Franeisco and several other cities invaded Santa Cruz to induct 103 "novices" 35 from Santa Cruz into the Mystic Shrine. The parade, headed by the beautifully-costumed 70-piece Islam Temple band, marched down Pacific avenue followed by the Monterey Shrine club drum and bugle crps, color bearers, patrol, Potentate Harvey Teller in a jeep escorted by his divan in four open cars, followed by the director and staff, Greeters, Arabians with a dancer, Section Crew, Legion of Honor, Temple guard, Santa Cruz Shrine club, candidates in make-up, all hanging onto a long rope and guarded by watchmen suitably armed, San Jose Shrine club and lastly by the Nobility. The band gave a concert on the courthous lawn under the direction of Noble Auerbach.

The various bodies were strikingly costumed. One of the outstanding features was a reproduction of a hospital bedroom in which the onlooker could see a nurse watching a sick white child in a Chinese boy and a Negro boy sitting in chairs. One could see from that tableau what the Shrine stands for. The candidates got what a coming to them in the auditorium at the evening session. Charles M.

Pennell, president of the Santa Cruz Shrine club and general chairman, was very happy over the event as was Col. Robert C. Murphy who was parade marshal. 142 PACIFIC AVE. PH. 54 duced a 1946 unofficial census which showed 2,095,000 in Philadelphia and only 1,805,000 in Los Angeles. Grover whipped out a statement by Mayor Fletcher Bowron, who started the controversy a few weeks ago by shoving Philadelphia into fourth place in population and putting Los Angeles third. Bowron said that a population gain since the census of 200,000, many of them from Philadelphia, boosted Los Angeles to 2,105,000 9,000 over the Philadelphia figure.

Philadelphia demanded to see Bowron about it. Bowron, conveniently, was out of town. Both sides said they'd wait for vindication from the 1950 census. Dents taken out New fenders installed Auto painting Easy Terms. Prollo DBnewllei C.

Chamber of commerce vice-presidents squared off in their respective corners with fistfuls of figures to support their claims each represented the nation's third largest city. Philadelphia Vice President Frank G.

Binswanger insisted his city was bigger, square mile for square mile. Los Angeles Vice-President Earle V. Grover chortled that his city's limits contain four times as many square miles. Binswanger said that in 1940 "Greater" Philadelphia had a population of 3,500,000. Grover said "Greater" Philadelphia included eight counties, three of them in the neighboring state of New Jersey.

Los Angeles county alone beats all eight of them, he said, with a population now of 3.849,000. Philadelphia's county, Binswanger admitted, showed 2,060.000. But he challenged Los Angeles to measure population in a 10 mile radius from the city hall, or in any other equal area. "Take a 100-mile radius if you want to," he said. "With that, New-York becomes a Philadelphia suburb." Grover said Los Angeles was third in the nation in retail sales.

Binswanger said Philadelphia's merchandising areas number and it metropolitan district Los Angeles said its metropolitan district was 3,146,000. Finally they got around to actual city populations. Binswanger pro- Editor: This shortage of money to build the East Side fire house reminds me of the old prospector who, after months of futile search was unable to make a strike. In his rage he sat down on a rock and while bemoaning his bad luck, he struck the rock a vicious blow which cracked it open. It turned out to be one of the richest silver mines of the old West.

Let's look at the facts. The city owns a very valuable lot on the corner of Benito street and Soquel avenue. This lot is comparable on the East Side to any corner lot on Pacific avenue. Recently the (5 Oil ul 1 TZ3 c3 nn GG D) i 1 I it kill i city was offered $15,000 cash for tne lot, which they refused. The LnJ i mi SflLY ElilSSS-FRAZEC? This is the lot the. city proposes to build the fire house on. There are two lots within a stone's throw of this city lot which can be purchased for $2000 each. Either of these lots, would, in my opinion be suitable for the fire-house. Here is what would happen if the city would switch locations.

The city would have $13,000 more for the construction of the fire-house. New taxable improvements would be built, more stores would be added, more people employed. Can we of the city of Santa Cruz afford to turn away outside capital, new taxes, new stores and all that goes with it? Or haven't you read your tax statement this year? Hollister has not been labeled as a pushover.

With a veteran team on hand, the Ramblers have visions of a victory. Perhaps their visions will become reality if such speedsters as Jim Bidegary, Milt Mota, and Frank Flores can find a hole in the heavier Salinas forward wall. Coach Bob Robinett has no intentions of his warriors incurring any more injuries. For that reason his reserves will be asked to play the majority of the time. Hampered by early season "bruises and cuts," the Panthers are mending their wounds in an effort to topple San Francisco and Menlo off their high horses.

Robinett plans on starting a complete new line-up against Hollister. However all the regulars will be ready to enter the contest should the Ramblers prove too tough. The Panthers faint hopes of downing the league leading San Francisco Rams, three days later, hinge on the condition of Clarence Twitchell. Twitchell was named on several All-Conference teams last season and almost a sure bet for all-league honors this fall.
