By Rodlow Willard Santa Cruz Sentinel-News 5 SCORCIIY SMITH Thursday, July 24, 1947 grgji State Senator Deuel Dies Ex-Naval Hospital Personnel Hold Party At Cowell's Beach is being planned, as well as social affairs during the winter. Details have not been worked out yet. but it is possible that a club will be formed. Dorothy Begin was suggested as president, being the originator of the plan. "It seems only Titting that some organization be formed to Dreserve the hospital's memory actively and keep its former members in touch with one another," she said.

Many of those attending Sunday's beach party met for the first time while stationed at the hospital and were married here. The old Waves quarters at Cliff and Trinity streets was the scene of numerous showers and wedding receptions. The hospital opened here in March, 1943. and was at first staffed entirely with male navy personnel. News of the arrival of the first four Waves was greeted with much grumbling.

However, thev proved so popular that by November when a large contingent of Waves came to replace men sent overseas, they were heartily welcomed. Most of the former civilian personnel was composed of residents, but the military personnel was largely from other states. That so Collection Of Miniatures In Library Display If you take a minute to look into the large glass case at the right inside Santa Cruz's public library, you will see a collection of hand-painted, ivory miniatures, part of a collection being displayed by Miss Jacqueline Bunce, assistant at the library. The miniatures were painted by Miss Bunce's grandfather, Herbert S. Percy, who is alsa the water color painter of the five large originals of English rural life that are being shown.

The water colors have the soft, hazy finish of an early English painting. Included in the collection are a Chinese tea caddy, which is a highly decorated and lacquered box lined with a finely-etched metal casing; a baby rattle in silver, made about 1857. and with a whistle on the end: an original candle snuffer with handles like a pair of ordinary sissors; and a hand-painted fan with a delicately carved wooden base from the Paris exhibition of 1857. All of the pieces are museum i pieces. Anyone wishing to display his i special hobby in the library's hobby case is asked to get in I touch with Mrs.

naval special hospital now once acain the Casa del Key hotel. Attending the uarty were 37 adults and nine children. The weatherman co-operated in producing one of the finest swimming days of the season. The idea originated several months ago when some of the former personnel chanced to meet on the beach and began reminiscing over old times. Idly, at first, they named various members of the staff who lived here until they realized how many there were.

Two of the group. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hauschild (Leora Anderson), both former members of the hospital staff, whose romance began while they were stationed here, live in Salinas and were planning a July vacation here. The date was chosen to coincide with their visit.

Mrs. John Mendo.nsa (Deris Van Hecke, former Wave), and Dorothy Begin, former civil service employe, made as complete a list of names and addresses as was obtainable and mailed cards telling of the event. It proved so thoroughly enjoyable that it was decided to get together often in the future and another beach party after Labor Dav Ernest tto's Never a dull moment for deep sea anglers and anglerettes at Santa Cruz the past week! Salmon once again was in the limelight with a total of eleven of these delectable fish being landed by the following: M. Amaral, San Jose, 19 pounds; C. E.

Dominic Gerbo of Redwood City beamed with joy when he landed a 34 pound halibut. Thrills and excitement were provided by Nettie Williams of Oakland, who had quite a sport when she landed, with rod and reel, a foot bluefin shark weighing 50 pounds, which played for 20 minutes, and Roy Baneroff of Lodi, who had a similar experience with an 8 foot sandpaper shark weighing 200 pounds. Mr. Baneroff also had good catches of red rock cod, bluefish, yellowtail and sole. The fish story of the week is that of Mrs.

Ann Van Omen of Santa Cruz. Mrs. Van Omen, using rod and reel, 8-0 hook, sardine bait, was reeling in a 3-pound ling cod, but only to be followed by a 33-pound ling cod who came out of the water to engulf the 3-pound ling cod and which in turn was hooked and gaffed. 'Tis evident that Mrs. Van Omen had the better of the deal.

Many fine catches of ling cod, red rock cod, gopher cod, bluefish, cabezone. yellowtail cod, sole and sea trout were made. Some of the good catches included: San Francisco Harold Wright. 3 ling cod. 14.
