THE NEWS--NEWPORT, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1951 PAGE FIVE It CURLEY DROPS OUT OF BOStONRACE Veteran 'Boss' Will Not Campaign, Solicit Votes BOSTON, Oct. 3 Michael Curley, one of the last of the oldline political "bosses," said last night he would neither campaign nor solicit votes for himself in the coming Boston mayoralty election. Mayor John B. Hynes, Curley's opponent in the Nov. 6 election, said "I consider this a bonafide withdrawal." The 76-year-old Curley said, however, he couldn't legally withdraw from the race "because my name is still on the.

ballot." He added that if the mere fact of his name being on the ballot was enough to elect him he would have to accept the office. "1 would have no alternative," he said. "It would be my duty." Curley made his dramatic announcement in the. drawing room of his expensively-furnished brick colonial house. Hands Reporters Copies After a rollcall showed every newspaper in town was represented, he handed each reporter a copy of the statement and then read aloud in a rich baritone from his own copy.

"As national Democratic committeeman," he said, "my duty is clear to regard my personal ambition to be mayor as secondary to my obligation to the Democratic party and make no contest for the office of mayor." He said he would devote his efforts, instead, to campaign against city council and schoo committee candidates endorsed the new Boston committee. The committee is comprised young non-partisan politicians an backers whose announced objec tfve is "good government." Make Any Endorsement The new Boston committee did not make any endorsement in the mayoral battle, but observers said Curley felt the group threw strong support to Hynes-. Hynes and Curley were nominated last week in a four-cornered race with the present mayor topping Curley, 108,414 to 77,268 votes. Hynes, then seeking his first elective office, unseated Curley by 12,000 votes two years ago. Up to then, Hynes had been city clerk for several years.

Some followers of Boston's political trends saw in Curley's announcement the close of his public career--a career that spanned 51 years arid included four terms as Boston Mayor, one term as governor and several terms as Congressman. Less than two hours after Curley's announcement, State Senator Charles J. Innes of the Back Bay, the Republican floor leader, said he would seek legislation today to take Curley's name off the ballot. Innes said Curley's statement indicated "a desire to withdraw."
