Alabama Jury Convicts Pair Tuscaloosa, Ala. (AP) Two Negro brothers were' convicted yesterday of assault and battery for an attack on a University of Alabama freshman which they blamed on their bitterness against treatment of Autherine Lucy. An all-white circuit court jury returned the verdict after deliberating 20 minutes, fixing a fine of $500 and recommending "maximum imprisonment." Judge Reuben Wright then sentenced Arthur Washington, 23, find John Washington, 19, to six months in jail for the Feb. 14 beating of Samuel Perrin Taylor, 19-year-old engineering They were indicted for assault with intent to murder, a after the relatives of Taylor insisted on a'jury trial for the Negroes. Punishment oh conviction of assault with intent to murder is two to 20 years in prison.
