In a 2011 interview with the magazine Its Psychedelic, Baby, Cornick recalled that he and his bandmates had been surprised by the reaction to Jethro Tills second album, Stand Up. We sdll thought we were a blues band, he said. You dont consciously change the direction of your music. It just happens naturally, so we were all shocked when the album was released and people said, Oh, theyre not playing blues anymore. Glenn Douglas Barnard Cornick was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England, on April 23, 1947.

He began playing bass in his teens and first worked with Anderson in Blackpool in a band that eventually evolved into Jethro Till. Cornick played on the bands first three albums, This Was (1968), Stand Up (1969) and Benefit (1970), and on its first tours. He left shortly before the band recorded its celebrated album Aqualung and was replaced by Jeffrey Hammond. He later formed the band Wild Tirkey and was a member of Paris, a group that also included the former Fleetwood Mac singer and guitarist Bob Welch. Cornick is survived by his wife, Brigitte Martinez-Comick; a daughter, Molly Cornick; and two sons, Drew and Alex.

In a statement on the Jethro Till website, Anderson praised Cornick as someone who brought to the early stage performances of Till a lively bravado both as a personality and a musician. BY PETER KEEPNEWS New York Times Glenn Cornick, the original bassist in the popular British rock group Jethro Till in the late 1960s, died Thursday at his home in Hilo, Hawaii He was 67. His death was announced on the bands website. His family said the cause was congestive heart failure. The focal point of Jethro Till, which was formed in late 1967 and remained active into this year, was always Ian Anderson, who in addition to being the lead singer and principal songwriter is a charismatic performer and one of the few rock musicians to play flute.

But the contributions of Cornick and the bands other two members for most of his three-year tenure he played alongside guitarist Martin Barre and drummer Clive Bunker did not go unnoticed. The group typically creates a deep, rumbling bass and guitar line and paints a breathy flute ribbon upon it, Mike Jahn wrote in a 1969 New York Times review of Jethro Tills performance at the Fillmore East. It maintains this through moments of loud, typically British rock bashing, and occasional passages of relatively quiet, inauspicious jazz. Like many other British rock bands of its era, Jethro Till, whimsically named after an 18th-century British agriculturist, started out primarily playing the blues. But the group did not achieve widespread fame until its sound developed into something more ambitious and uncat- Annie Beiler Annie Beiler, of 143 Voganville New Holland, PA, died peacefully Saturday morning, August 30, 2014 at her residence.

Then, as they leave, there is more property with no demand or weak demand, so there is more property to deteriorate.

Its a very ugly process. How effectively a city handles blight often depends on the resources available to devote to the problem. For most municipalities, those resources are increasingly finite. Please see BUGHT, page B4 JSuUtiian rlome 121 South Prince Street Lancaster, PA 17603 717-397-8298 You just never want to get too far behind, he said. Of the 34,103 housing units in Scranton, 20,083, or 59 percent, were built in 1939 or earlier, according to the most recent U.S.

Census Bureau estimates. The figure is 58 percent 11,102 of 19,281 in Wilkes-Barre and 44 percent 5,088 of 11,505 in Hazleton. Margaret Dewar, a University of Michigan urban planning professor and a scholar with the University of Pennsylvanias Institute for Urban Renewal, said aging housing is not necessarily a precursor of blight. With sufficient demand, old housing can be rehabilitated and repurposed, she said. However, having too much housing for a citys population is an undisputed recipe for blight, and once it takes hold, it tends to become self-perpetuating, Dr.

Dewar said. Detroit is probably the most notorious example, she said, but it can be found on a lesser scale in cities large and small that have experienced population loss or significant middle-class flight. In neighborhoods, the big issue is it reduces the remaining residents confidence in the future of the neighbor BY DAVID SINGLETON The Scranton Times-Tribune SCRANTON Scranton is a city of 76,000 people with a housing stock largely built before 1940 for a population almost twice that number. It has the blight to prove it. As the financially strapped city struggles to combat blight and the host of ills it fosters, Scranton finds itself in a position common among many Rust Belt communities: many old buildings, too few people willing or able to keep them up and limited resources to press aggressively for a comprehensive solution.

The regions other two major cities, Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton, are dealing with similar issues, though their circumstances dont precisely mirror Scrantons. When Patrick Hinton became the director of Scrantons Department of Licensing, Inspections and Permits in January, he made attacking blight and clamping down on the absentee property owners many see as the primary contributors a priority. He believes his department is holding its own, though he acknowledges everyone always wants more progress. Its difficult, Hinton said. The public sees it as we are not doing our job, and thats not really the case.

The inspectors work hard, but we are limited. We can only get to so many places in a day. It is the same story in Wilkes-Barre and Hazletoa By its nature, blight can be stealthy, making it an almost impossible problem to stay ahead of, Hazleton Mayor Joseph Yannuzzi said.
