There was a cloud at even So spiritually fair, Methought some creature of the sky Had raised liis mansion there And when its fleecy bosom in the hallowed light, They said it was an angel's wing Which made its hues so bright. There flowed a stream of summer. So lovely from its spring, The merest weed, upon its breast Became an envied thing; And in the starry midnight. So gleamed its silver tide, The very sea-nymphi left their caves, To revel at its side. But, Ah soon failed the siinlighl! Failed, too, the fountain head That cloud became an Ethiop A waste, that river-bed.

Hope of the youthful bosom aspiring dream How like are ye, in eye. Unto that Cloud and Stream and after we got him, saw the bftll-hole. I know that more than one other of our musket or rifle balls hit him. 8omo buck shot holes were found in his head and neck, but they did not appear to hurt him. To cut this short, however, suffice it to say, that we had him, and after re-loadmg our guns at the shore and firing one more volley, Mr Leavitt harpooned him, and we hauled him ashore perfectly dead.

By the way, it seems that his head and the part he carries out of water are his only vulnerable body being covered with a thick, impenetrable coat of scales. Maxcy says his mother, like the mother of Achilles, probably dipped him in some magic river to render him invulnerable, but like Thetis, was not aware that any part of him teas out." Be that as it may, he is a most wonderful animal, being over ninety feet long, and eight feet six inches girth in the largest part. The far- famed "bunches" we have not been able as yet to make out. They appear as much as any thing to resemble the back bones of a hake kept together by a thick covering of muscles and skin. The head, however, is the most singular.

He has two hooked teeth in front of his upper jaw, which all who have seen him suppose to be poisonous. But I will not attempt a description of what 1 confess I do not myself as yel understand. You must come up to-morrow in the firat train. Maxcy will bring this scrawl as he comes to the city for a friend of his, a skilful Taxydermist. They will return to-morrow morning, and you fail of coming with them, as you will sec what you will probably never have an opportunity to witness again.

In haste, your friend, J. W. P. shall probably begin to take off his skin to-morrow afternoon, or early next day morning, so that I must again urge you to let nothing prevent your coming with Maxcy, as I despair of ever seeing His Marine uncouth hide stuffed in any thing like a natural manner. J.

Dear Tim a promptneas little anticipated, I apprehend, by either you or me, I will now fulfil iny promise of writing you from this place. I do it under great excitement, so that I trust you will excuse all my errors of omission, of comntission, of obscurity, tautology, and any others into which I may chance to fall, especially when you come to know that I have this morning been engaged in sport, to which the adorable Loon-shooting you so much enjoy here, is but the most insipid amusement merest vanity. We have at last caught the Sea Serpent! The incredulous (yourself among the number) who have ridiculed the idea as preposterous, must now alter their tone, or utterly discredit the evidence of their senses. Want of time and the state of my nerves both compel me to be brief, but 1 will give you, as well as I can under the circumstances, outline Ol too capture. This morning about 6 as thc Loon-gunners were standing on the rocks at the east end of Head, we all at once discerned at sea, what appeared to be a long line of Loons, or some very large fowl.

The attention of all was, of course, rivetted on this singular appearance, (singular, because, you know. Loons nor Divers never flock in the sea with any regularity) when, all at once, our doubts were removed by the sudden appearance of an enormous snout and neck, at least six feet clear from thc water, and the rising of the line of bunches, so that instead of resembling birds, they appeared, as near as I can express it, like large, oblong buoys, and nearer together than before. Immediately the cry of sea serpent was in every mouth. Some were for going off without delay, but thc better part of valor constrained them to stay. At last, he was observed to turn towards the shore and approach with great rapidity, and such a scampering as we made off the rocks I guess you never saw'.

In came old salt, and a more beautiful sight I never saw. His green looking, sleek head, glistening in the sun, turning this way and splendid white curve of foam before his graceful, snake-like motion of his surpassed all description. He made directly for the Hook of the (you recollect the place where we shot bedded coot last fall) and as he continued playing round there, we immediately set on foot preparations for an attack. We sent up town for a harpoon, cleared a boat, and loaded thirteen guns, some with balls and some with buckshot. Mr Leavitt also liunted up a small swivel which came ashore in a wreck last year, and that we loaded with every thing almost which wa.s at hand, and placed it on the fore cud.

There was some difficulty about getting a crew, but finally six volunteered, besides Maxey and your humble servant, who was honored with thc charge of operations. We then attached a long rope (four whaleboat cables with buoys on each) one end to the boat and the other to a post on shore, with about a dozen men to pull us in, when we should give the signal. While these preparations were going forward, the monster had stretched himself at length on the water, apparently for a snooze, between the Winnicumet and the Sunk We immediately put ofl', and as silently as possible rowed directly for him. We succeeded in getting to the end of our rope without disturbing him, but were almost discouraged at seeing him still distant some fifteen or twenty rods. Hope revived, however, as we perceived that the sea was slowly heaving him in.

While we were waiting, every moment seemed an hour, and I almost began to wish myself ashore, as every rising wave revealed his horrid shape. We had, however, gone too far to retract, and come what would I resolved to abide the issue. In the mean time we got ready our swivel, and four of the largest guns loaded with ball, and two with buckshot. After waiting till he was within about forty yards, I ordered the two who were holding the boat up against the sea to take in their oars. In doing so they made some considerable noise which roused him, as he immediately raised his head and gave the water a cut with his tail that sounded like the discharge of a gun.

It as a fearful moment. If ever I felt that my lamp of life wa.xed dim, it was then, as he turned directly for us. I had, however, previously lit the and hastily aiming the swivel as near as possible, applied the fire. But it did not take. During a painful interval, I rubbed the lighted rope over and over the breech.

He neared us rapidly, and ail this while no one thought to make the signal to be fiauled in. Thc delaf probably saved us, for at last went the old rusty gun, and with a very pretty execution too. Being so near, the whole charge struck his head and shot, old nails, musket halls, and every thing el.ie. a splashing The was one sheet of foam. He would inevitably have sunk us, had it not been for tho rope on shore.

Not waiting longer for the signal, they hauled away, while we began our guns, though generally with very laijcrable aim. I however shot Mr big rifle, and good luck (nothing else, I am sure) directed the ball precisely through a fin, about a foot from head. I saw thc blood fpiri, Cecil: or the adventures of a Coxcomb. Boston W. D.

Ticknor is a reprint of a late English novel, which has received much praise from the Edinburg Review'. The author undoubtedly displays great knowledge of human nature, and the frivolities of fashionable life. He is brilliant, satirical, and w'itty, and his w'ork has many shrewd observff- tions on men and From the very nature of the subject, however, his work has less interest than many others of inferior ability; and while we cheerfully acknowledge the powers of the writer, we hardly think the novel will repay tho trouble of perusal. The plot, if it may be so called, consists of the autobiography of Cecil Granby, a younger and portionless scion of English nobility. Most of the first volume is occupied by the recital of the attempts and failures, to establish himself in the fashionable world.

In consequence of his remorse at the death of a young girl by whom he was beloved, but whose affection he has slighted from ambitious motives, he becomes an altered man, joins the army, fights with honor in the peninsular war, returns to England, is the accidental cause of the death of his nephew, who stood between him and the title, and finally takes leave of the reader as an old bachelor and heir presumptive to thirty thousand a year. In the first portion of the work, Cecil is a mere heartless coxcomb, to all intents and purposes, and the author has well preserved the marked traits in his mental conformation, throughout the subsequent changes of character. Very many of the other characters, also, are well drawn, nH thA the maniac father of the broken-hearted Emily, the death of the young heir and the subsequent conduct of the family, and story of the old soldier, are powerfully written. The bulk of the book, however, is London gossip, and most of the pages are devoted to nothing higher than details of fashionable hollowness and eccentricity. Al! this is well done, to be sure, but thc result is unsatisfactory, and we are sorry that a man of the evident ability has thus wasted his time.

Those who care not for a story, and are content to dig for diamonds on a dunghill, will find something to amuse, and an occasional passage to interest them. But those whose pleasure lies in their sympathy with characters and incidents, will be disappointed in Cecil. Correspondence of the Boston Branch. Springfield, Sept. 20, 1841.

This ancient town is greatly improving from the benefit of its railroad communication with our city. Here, it is universally known, is situated the principal United States Armory, for small arms owned by our government. It employs at different times from 250 to 600 persons, principally mechanics and artists of the first order there are none superior to them, perhaps in any country. They are a high- mindea, intelligent, and noble-spirited set of men. Until lately, they have enjoyed, very properly, great privileges.

They worked by the piece, and if they did a proper amount of xvork and did it well, they were not farther questioned. But, we are sorry to say, these privileges, one after another, are being wrested from them, and they are rapidly approaching the condition of a State prison bird. Mr Robb, the former superinfendant, is dismissed, and the establishment reduced from civil to militaiy supervision. Major Ripley is put over it, who seems resolved to reduce every man employed there to a state of slavery. Some of his recent orders have put the whole town of Springfield in a ferment.

The men, although working by the piece, are compelled to be there at bell-ringing. A man, compelling his own hands to work fourteen hours per day, is put on a committee for reducing expenses, and an infamous order is pas.sed, forbidding the penny post and boys to fetch to the shops the books and papers belonging to the workmen, with other oppressions which could be borne only by slaves. The men bear it w'ith sullen despair, because their bread is in the hands of their oppressors. The citizens, however, make known their displeasure in no measured terms. We trust Pre.sident Tyler and Mr Webster need only be apprised of these facts, to restore things to their former condition.

If the voice of these worthy men is not heard, there will be a political revolution in old Hampden. If, xvhich we fear is not the case, we are in any degree misinformed in these matters, xve are prepared to correct any mistake. THE UNATTENDED IlEARriK. Among the many scenes to be now daily witnessed in this city, which excite oiir sympathy, awaken our commiseration, or enlist our pity, an unattended hearse, as it bears its lifeless burthen to the grave, calls up most quickly from the recesseH of the heart, thoughts shrouded in robed in regret. When we sec that one horse sombre vehicle driven xve observe the indifference with which the black driver hurries along to the grave-yaril with pulseless we not a soul following after, to perform the last sad rites departed friendship, or to place even the most simple mark of recognition over the grave, we fee! that the inhabitant of that rough, unornamented coffin died a desolate stianger But, we know not how be his journey, even from the cradle to the grave, one continued pilgrimage of he was once the inheritor of po.ssessor of consequence, surrounded by butter-fly friends, who deserted him when the summer of his prosperity passed whether some loving wife, affectionate mother, or kind-hearted sister is not anticipating his return to a home long deserted, to friends long estranged, at the very time when his dust is being commilled to dust, by a strange hand in the swamps of New Orleans never see an unattended funeral but we fee! that we float through life on the ocean of uncertainty ourselves; and at such a tune we pray heaven to avert from ua a death so grave so pray, if rt should not be vouchsafed to us die among our kindred, that we may at least be permitted to breathe our last whore we are our -Y.
