The Daily Register, Harrisburg, Illinois October 2. 1958 Pajte Five Most Famous Speller Library oi Congress Observing 200th Anniversary of Noah Webster By JAMES BAAR Vnlted Press International WASHINGTON (UPl) The Library of Congress is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the most famous Webster. Webster was born Oct. 16. By the time he died in 1843 the phrase "Webster says" ended any argument over to spell a aord in these United States.

He wrote the first edition of his spelling book in 1783. By 1890 Americans had bought 60 million copies of the book in its variou.s editions. (The U. S. population in 1890 was 62.900.000.)
