Mike Kilkenny was restored to the active roster Tuesday after 'being on the disabled list since April 18 with stomach problems diagnosed as inflam- med lymph nodes of the abdomen.

Room on the roster was created when Detroit shipped Jim Hannan to the Milwaukee Brewers for pitcher John Gelnar and infielder outfielder Jose Herrera, both of whom were assigned to the Tigers' Toledo farm club. Hannan, 31, was one of the four players the Tigers acquired from Washington in the Denny McLain deal last October. He had a 1-0 record for 11 innings over seven relief appearances this season with Detroit. Gelnar, 27, had only been in two games for the Brewers this season and must have been on Manager Dave Bristol's "list" since he'd appeared in 53 last year with a 4-3 record and 4.21 earned run average. Gelnar was 3-10 with a 3.30 ERA for 39 games with Seattle in 1969.

Herrera, 26, has played for Houston and Montreal of the National League, with batting marks of .240 and .286 in 27 and 47 games, respectively, for each club. Pitchers aren't the only folks who can throw a "strike," the dissatisfied members of Local 79 of the Service Employes International Union may toss one which could shut down Tiger Stadium. The stadium workers, without a contract since March 15, meet today to discuss when they want to strike and an excellent guess would be the day Denny McLain returns to pitch in Detroit. Right now, that figures to be a week from Saturday. Ticket sales for all three weekend games have been unusually heavy, since no one is certain when McLain makes his return to pitch against the ball club he once pitched so well for.

Members of the local, including members of the grounds crew, ushers, ticket takers, guards around the park and watchmen, voted last Saturday to strike unless their demands for higher wages and fringe benefits were met. Right-handed pitcher Dennis Saunders, previously on option to Detroit's Toledo farm Club, was sold to Tidewater of the International League Tuesday. The Mets' top farm team obtained Saunders after he cleared major league a i unclaimed. Saunders had been in 10 games, all in relief, with a 1-1 record and 9.88 earned runs average for Manager Mike Roarke's Mud Hens. TRAVERSE CITY Norton Benched With Sore Shoulder; Tiger Manager Billy Martin Irritated DETROIT (UPI)-Willie Horton's volcanic season-long problems erupted with the suddenness of his home runs Tuesday night when Detroit Tigers' Manager Billy Martin accused his slugging left-fielder of taking himself out of the lineup and hinted Horton was not giving his best.

Horton was scheduled to play against lefty Clyde Wright and the California Angels but, after pitching some batting practice and taking a few swings himself, reported to trainer Bill Behm that he could hardly raise his right arm. So Martin hastily substituted Norm Cash at first base and switched Jim Northrup from first to left--and Detroit went out and lost 5-0 to an eight- hitter by Wright. "Horton took himself out of the lineup," an obviously irritated but controlled Martin said at the completion of the game. "After hitting 15 or 20 balls into the upper deck and bleachers, he came in and told the trainer he had a little trouble raising his arm," Martin added sarcastically. "How come you aren't playing?" the 5-foot-10, 210- pound mass of muscle was asked before the game.

"I don't know. Ask the man," replied Horton, who jumped the club for five days in 1969 because of "personal problems." CLASSIC SET CORVALLIS, Ore. (UPI) -Pairings for the Far West Basketball Classic beginning Dec. 27 in Portland, were announced Tuesday with Washington meeting Florida State and Oregon State meeting Dartmouth in the first round. The next night, Washington State plays Michigan and Oregon meets New Mexico.

Later, Horton relented somewhat and explained he had a knot in his right shoulder, which was visible, and he couldn't raise his arm above shoulder level. "I usually can work it out," he said dejectedly. can swing if I hold my bat way down low but I can't hit that way. i going wrong." He has five home runs and 15 runs batted in, but Horton's batting average is down to .209. The 27-year-old Horton, who never has realized the stardom predicted for him, has had financial and domestic problems.

"I am a little disappointed. I've played this game with the flu, with pneumonia, with cracked ribs, broken ribs, broken toes, a broken nose--I even played a month and a half after I broke an ankle," Martin said. "But I was only making $20,000 a year and I was hungry. We've got a right- fielder (Al Kaline) who's shown me more guts than anybody," Martin said. "He's got a big knot in his leg, a bad muscle and a bad foot.

He's been out for a few days but he came to me and said he'd give it a try today. Martin talked with General Manager Jim Campbell for an hour after the game, and all of the conversation centered on Horton. Willie has expressed a halfhearted desire to be traded recently but there's scant chance for that. Horton's money was managed for him up until about a year ago and he is known to have split with his long-time adviser, Judge Damon Keith of Detroit. Since that time, he has met with financial difficulties.

None of his several non- baseball investments is doing very well, including a bar into which he sank $15,000 for improvements but which does not have a liquor license yet. Horton separated from his wife during the past winter and also reportedly has been the constant target of pressure from militant black friends. "I grew up in a mixed neighborhood," Martin said, listing several minority groups which lived close to him as a youngster, "and I've never believed in that prejudice garbage. "I don't care what a man is-just as long as he can play baseball. I don't know what it is, but I certainly hope Willie gets back because there is a great need for his bat in the lineup."
