There were only two singles left in the St.

Both of them belonged to Lou Brock as Barr stopped nibbling for the corners and decided to challenge the Cardinal batters with hard stuff. The result was a 2 0 victory for the Giants. Barr held the Cardinals hitless until Brock ruined his no hit bid by lining a sharp single off the pitcher's glove leading off the seventh.

Brock got the other hit when he singled up the middle with two out in the ninth. Barr walked three and struck out six. Pirates 7, Dodgers 2 Brett not only fired a two hitter but outhit the Dodgers all by himself with two doubles and a single. Master Derby The Preakness Race Thirteen of the 36 district records were either tied or broken here Saturday afternoon, at the senior high school athletic field, during the annual District 9 Class A and Class boys' track and field It was a well run meet, finished by 3:30, thanks to sectional meets held the weekend before that reduced the field to the best 12 athletes in each event. Class A competition saw the 100 yard dash and 330 yard intermiedate hurdles records smashed and the 220 yard dash record tied. In Class the records in the two mile relay, 120 yard high hurdles, mile run, shot put, 440 yard run, 330 yard intermediate hurdles, mile relay and triple jump were broken and the records in the 100 yard dash and 880 yard run were tied. Kane head coach Dave Brown, asked for an explanation on wy so many records were tied or broken, said, "It probably was a combination of things. It was a real nice day and the sectional meets had reduced the field to the 12 best boys in each event, making for stiff competition." He called the runs of Rick Swider of DuBois in winning the 100 yard and 220 yard dashes the top performances in Class A.

He called Ron McNitt's winning mile run, the 440 yard run of Jay Shofestall of Clarion Limestone, the Johnsonburg mile relay and the Mark Bright triple jump the top performances in Class B. The top two finishers in each event qualified for the State Meet, to be held next weekend. That means that Jeff Wolfe, 2nd in the mile run, Mike Peterson, 2nd in the triple jump and the two mile relay team, which finished 2nd, will represent Kane in the State Meet. The Kane two mile relay team included Jeff Wolfe, Al Wolfe, Joe Blauser and Bill Zaunick and there is a possibility Brown will take Mark Carlsson as an alternate on the relay team. DuBois, as expected, won the Class A championship and Redbank Valley won the Class trophy.

Kane finished in 4th place in Class one point behind 2nd place Clarion Limestone and only a half point behind 3rd place Elk County Christian. Brown said the Kane squad did "better than I thought we would do at lije start of the season, but not as good as I exepcted going into the meet." He added, "The boys who did place for us had good times, heights and distances. Bob Hanson's 11 feet 6 was his best in the pole vault and Peterson went 42 feet 53j inches, his best ever, in the triple jump. Jeff Fragale just missed our school record in the intermediate hurdles. He was timed (his best previous time was .15.8) and the school record is 15.2." "Smiley" Adams said. "I guess the Louisiana Derby was his bestrace, but this one wasn't bad not bad at all," Adams said. Held just 1M to 2 lengths off the lead for the first half mile, Master Derby moved on the pace setting Native Guest in the turn for home and scored by a length. "I told my rider (DarrelMcHargue) don't get shuffled back. He was a shade closer than I thought he'd "be, but I wanted him to have a horse to look at," Adams said Sunday.

"You know, if he gets out in front too soon, he sometimes checks himself and I didn't want that to happen here," he said. Foolish Pleasure, further back in the early part of Saturday's race, made up some ground in the stretch run, but had to settle for second money. "I only saw him a time or two during the race because of all those idiots in center field," trainer LeRoy Jolley said. "But I could tell he wasn't handling the race track." Diabolo's third place finish, a length behind Foolish Pleasure and two behind the winner, didn't ruffle his trainer, Sid Martin, a bit. "It was all right," he said.

"Could have been better," a companion said. "Could have been worse," Martin shot back. The first three finishers, along with fourth place Prince Thou Art, fifth finisher Avatar and sixth place Singh now are expected to head for New York and the June 7 Belmont. Although a report in the Cincinnati Enquirer quoted Adams as saying Master Derby may skip the Belmont for the $100,000 Ohio Derby. "It's not that we don't want to meet Foolish Pleasure again," the newspaper quoted Adams as saying.

A fun filled evening was enjoyed by the seven and a half couples from Seneca Squares and one and a half couples from Belles of St. Marys.

Mrs. Wilbur Rhodes, president, announced that the new class will be meeting every Tuesday night at 7:30 at the Senior High cafeteria now through June. All memebers of the Seneca Squares are requested to attend these sessions. Lunch was served by Frank and Ruth Truden, Paul and Arlene Norman and Wilbur and June Rhodes.
