(unrr Fulton fit. '( i.i MLNl KH I-T Martyrs and O'her Saln's." This hook will enow you a picture of a tall, cadaverous looking individual with a long nose ani longer whiskers leading small procession of converts bearing crosses, which nuj are respectfully requested to believe is a likeness of the good old saint. This picture, is on the same general order as the regulation Barclay street group. Finally, if tha reader wishes to get throuoghly confused let him read the article, on ft. Patrick In tha Kncycloprlta Britannlca.

written by WtlW lam K. Sullivan. Ph.D. D. president of Queen's College, Cork but more of this later.

The following is about ihe style In whirh the Rev. Alban But ler's article on the saint reads: "St Patrick, after six months spent in slnvery (most nf (he other reference books say six years, by the under the same master, was admonished by God in a dream to return to his own country, and Informed that a ship was ready to sail thither. repaired immediately to the sea coast, though at a great distance, and found tha vessel, but could not obtain passage, probably (as tbe author remarks) for want of money. Thus new trials ever await tha servants of Cod! Wn also observe heie the same troubles which bothered the sainta of old continue to perplex the sinners of today, and that a certain amount of money ia not to be despised.) The saint returned toward his hut. praying as he went, but the sailors, though pagans, called him back rind took him on board.

After three days sail they made land, probably In the north of Scotland, but wandered twenty-seven days through deserts nnd were a long while distressed for want of provisions, finding; nothing to eat. (Judging from the plctur heretofore alluded to, (his was a rhronio stale with the great saint.) Patrick had often told the company of tha infinite power of God. They, therefore, asked him why he did not pray for relief. Animated by a strong faith he assured them that If they would address themselves with their wholo hearts to the true God He would hear and succor them. They did so, and on the same day met with a herd of swine.

From that time provisions never failed them (let ua hope they had plgsfeet, roast pig and sausages) till on the 27th day they came Into a -country that was cultivated and inhabited. During Ihetr distress Patrick refused to touch moats -which had been offered to idols. One day a great stone from a rock happened to fall upon him. while he was lying down to take a little rest, but he invoked Ellas and was delivered from danger. Some yeara afterward ho was again made captivo, but recovered his liberty after two months.

(Thus do we see that the life of Patrick was somewhat strenuous at times.) "Patrick wrote his "Confession" as a testimony to his mission when he was old. lt Is solid, full of good sense and piety, expresses an extraordinary humility and a great desire of martyrdom, and Is written with spirit. The author was perfectly versed in the Holy Scriptures. He confesses everywhere his own faults with a sincere humility and extols the great mercies of God toward him In this world, who had exalted bim, though the most undeserving of men. Yet to preserve him In humility offered him tba advantage of meeting with extreme contempt from others; that is, from tha heathens.

To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle: Onco more the anniversary of tho death of St. Patrick has rolled around and we know that spring. Is at hand and that summer with all it, delightful vacations and sea bathing will soon be upon us. Probably nine out of every ten peoplo that you meet if you were to ask them for what St. Patrick was deemed the most famous would reply that next to being, known as the patron saint of Ireland he was most noted for having driven the snakes out of Ireland; or, as a friend of mine terms him.

"St. Patrick, the Snake Charm- A search through half a dozen ency clopedias and several books of reference, however, has failed to reveal any foundation for this popular legend. It you will turn to your Century Dictionary you will find that St. Patrick (Latin: I'atrl-cius, i. noble, patrician) was horn accord ing to tradition at Nemthur (now Dumbar ton), Scotland, about A.

1). 36, and died prob ably about the year He was the son of the deacon Calpumfus, who was a of Potitus, a priest. After the withdrawal of the Roman garrisons Calpurnlus retired to the country south of the wall of Sevcrus, where Patrick was captured by the Plcls about 41 and sold as a slave into Ireland, After six years ho escaped, and, devoting himself to tho eonverslon of Ireland, prepared for the priesthood. About 425 he entered upon his mission and In 441 he was consecrated bishop. He wrote a "Confession" and an "Epistle." In Appleion's Universal Encyclopedia we are told that Patrick's baptismal name was Succat (meaning brave in battle), and that his birthplace is not known and that his dates are all disputed.

Ireland was then oc cupied by a great number of petty trihes, most of which were evangelized by Patrick. So well was the work accomplished that Ire land became known as the "Island of the Saints." The method employed was that of dealing rationally and gently with the old paganism of the people. The chieftains were nrst won over and then their clans. Much that has been related of Patrick is fabulous, but his autobiographical "Con- tession and his epistle to both unquestionably genuine, reveal a devout, simple-minded, unlettered man and a most discreet and energetic missionary. It Is a very curious fact that In these writings ot bis we find no mention of the Pope nnd no trace of tho doctrines of purgatory, auricular confession, transuhslantiat.ion or worship of the Virgin; while salvation by faith and all related doctrines are clearly taught.

This encyclopedia states that Patrick died at Salll, near Strangford Lough. County Down, Ulster, where, many years before, he had founded his first churrh on March 4B5, the day now SRcred to his memory. It discreetly forgets, however, to mention the date of his death. Appleion's American Encyclopedia states laconically that he died In Down. Ulster, and that the Roman Catholic Church keeps his festival on March 17, because ho died on that date in 493 or 485.

It. also adds the depressing statement that. Patrick Is said in his old age to have written his "Confession," but its authorship is considered doubtful by many. It. may be found In Sir John Ware's edition of the works of St.

Patrick (Svo. London, 1658), to which the gentle reader's earnest, attention Is respectfully called. If you see it in Appleion's it. must be so, but it Is better to consult either the Universal or the American unless you wish to have grave doubts raised in your mind. The American goes on to say that according to the accounts of his various biographers ho fouaded 365 churches (strange the number should have been equal to the number of days in the year) and baptized 12.000 persons; the date of his death is much disputed; the Bollandlsts place it in 460, while Usshcr held it to have been 493.

Dr. Todd (one of his authoritative biographers) Inclines strongly to the latter opinion, in which rase Patrick's age would have been 126 or at least 116. This seems like running back Inlo the long ages of Biblical days. The name of Patriclus was bestowed cyi him in Rome by Pope Celestlne, his original name having been Succalb. Dodd, Mead in their International Encyclopedia, sdd their little mite to the confusion on the subject by stating, that In one of the ancient Uvea Patrick is said to have been born at Nemthur: some writers designate his birthplace about the present Boulogne-Sur-Mer; others to a place In tho estuary of the Clyde (called from him As an example of how much- we may depend upon so-called standard authorities for accurate Information, it may he interesting to note in this connection that.

Chambers1 and the International Kneyclo-pedlas have precisely the same articles on St. Patrick and assign the dnte of his hlrih as 377 or 3H7 A. 11.. Appletons' Universal at about 372, Encyclopedia Itrltannica about Appletons' American about .172 or 373, Century Dictionary snout I'unK agnail's Dictionary, 372, and died, 460 (a question mark after boih dates). If the gentle reader is particularly Interested In this subject he is recommended to read in addition to Sir John Ware "Edition of the Works of St.

Patrick." spoken of heretofore, the latest biography by tho Rev. J. H. Todd, also W. I).

Klllen's "Ecclesiastical History of Ireland." "Whitley Slnke's "Tripartite Life of St. Patrick," and Mis. Runrtle Charles' book on the "Martyrs and Paints of the First Twslvs Centuries." This latter is by the author of the "Chronicles of the Schonberg-Cotta Family." and gives extracts from St. Patrick onfession. If you wish to read about St.

Patrick from a Roman Catholic standpoint you are recommended to the reference depnrinieni of Pratt Institute Library, where the good-natured attendant will bring you the Rev. His article Is the most complete of any published in the encyclopedias: "The materials for a lire of the apostle Of Ireland are very scanty; tbey consist, indeed, of only two Latin pieces one the so-called "Confession" nnd the other an "Epistle" about, a certain Coroticns. Some persons, apparently in Britain or Gaul, seem to havo accused Patrick of presumption In having undertaken so great a work as the Christianizing of Ireland, and of incapacity for the task; the Confession is a defense of himself against these charges, and is a kind of autobiographical sketch. The EpiBtle is a denunciation of a British chief called Corotlcus. supposed to be Caredig, conqueror of North Wales, who had ravaged the coast of Irelnnd, killed a number of Christian neophytes on tho very day of their baptism while still clad In while garments, carried off others into slavery, and scoffed at a deputation of clergy Patrick had sent to ask their release.

"There are also several old lives of the saint, seven of which have been published by Colgan in his 'Trias the last, of which, known as the Trlpatlte Life, la tbe most copious. These lives are based upon the two genuine documents above mentioned, anil are a tissue of legends and miracles, and, though no doubt containing a few genuine traditions, are only of value for manners and customs, and even for this Itirposo require much care in their use. "The place, time and circumstances of Patrick's labors have largely contributed lo the obscurity which surrounds him. His very name has helped to increase It. Patrt-ciiis.

like Augustus, seems to have been commonly used, even down to the seventh century, in the sense of noblemen or gentleman. Patrick's real name, according to tradition, was Succat, but tn his own writing! he calls himself Patrick. There was, however, another Patrick, who under the name of Pallndtus was unquestionably sent as bishop to Ireland by Pope Celestlne In the year 431: that is. the year before tha other Patrick commenced his mission according to the genornlly received accounts. Irish writers also mention a third Patrick.

genu Patralee, or Old Patrick, tho head nf St. Patrick's community, according to olio, account, and his tutor, according to an-oilier. The three Patricks have sorely puzzled haglologists, and created so much confusion and conjecture in the history of the early churrh that some have doubted the existence of such personage as St. Patrick at all. The absence of sny contemporary reference to him.

or of any mention of him ny Columbanus. Ucde, and. indeed, with very few exceptions by any writers outside of Irelnnd before tl-c ninth century, adds very much to the uncertainty and obscurity ot the subject." FREDERICK WILLIS DAVIS. Brooklyn, March 17, 1903. PRESENTED IRISH COMEDY.
